APRIL'S THEME: PASSOVER RECIPES
If Passover were a tree house, it would have a big “No Bread Allowed” sign taped to its door. Which is to say, Jewish law prohibits eating (or even owning) anything that is leavened (hametz) during Passover. (by Kveller Staff)
~ Yet who says eight days of dietary restrictions need to make your life less delicious? ~ ~ Enjoy the recipes in our Passover Issue! ~
RABBI RANDY SHEINBERG
This Year Will be Different from All Other Years
- This year, as in the past, we will join with family and friends around the seder table to celebrate Pesakh (Passover). However, to borrow language from the Haggadah itself, this year will be different from all other years. In other years (in my recent memory) we have been at peace; this year Israel is in the midst of a bloody and painful war.
- What does Passover have to teach us about current events in the Middle East? This year I am extracting two important lessons: ••• The value of freedom ... The story of Passover is the Jewish story of liberation. Freedom was so important that our ancestors prayed for it, risked their lives for it, and celebrated when they attained it. When we tell the story of our ancestors, we are invited to imagine that we ourselves experienced first slavery and then liberation. We do this to better understand how precious freedom is. • As of this writing, some 136 hostages are still being held in Gaza. They have been held in captivity for nearly six months. All that time their family members have waited in anguish for news of their welfare, waited in anguish to see them again. This Passover, we need to recommit to raising our collective voices to demand their freedom. ••• The value of empathy ... In the Biblical story, the Israelites escape to freedom by crossing the Sea of Reeds as that sea miraculously parts to allow them to walk through it. Pharaoh and the Egyptian army chase after them, the sea closes in on them, and they meet their end in the raging waters. The Haggadah shares a midrash, a story about that moment: The angels wish to rejoice when they see the Egyptians defeated, and so they begin to sing. But God stops them. God says to them, “My people are suffering, and yet you want to sing.” • The Passover story teaches us that no matter what our enemies have done to us, we should not rejoice at their suffering. As we see images of the devastation of Gaza and of so many Palestinian victims, we can do what the angels did not - open our hearts to their suffering, empathize with their pain.
- Empathy and Freedom ... In war, everybody suffers, and nobody is truly free. We need to keep fighting the forces of hatred and evil, and working towards a time of true and lasting peace for all.
May you have a sweet Passover and may we all soon live in a world of freedom and peace.
TORAH PROJECT GROUP
Have you ever wanted to learn to chant from the Torah? Here is your chance! You can still join our Torah Class. Even though the class has begun, we can always make room for you. This month classes will be held on Thursday - April 4th, 11th, and 18th at 10:00am in the Beber Auditorium and via ZOOM (Meeting ID: 823 7679 3869 / Passcode: 705568). Our learning sessions will be celebrated at a special Shabbat Morning Service on Saturday, May 11th 2024, when we will each have a chance to chant a verse – or more – of Torah!

TEMPLE PRESIDENT:
- LISA LUPO -
Cooking Season Has Begun!
- The first major holiday meal of the year – Passover – will be upon us in a few weeks. I generally prepare a holiday brisket every year, however I do experiment and vary my side dishes and desserts.
- Last year I tried a New York Times recipe for “Flourless Carrot Cake”. It went over so well at the first seder that I made it again the next morning for the second seder. My son-in-law gave it the highest compliment you can give a Passover dessert – “It doesn’t even taste like a Passover dessert!” So now, “Flourless Carrot Cake” is being added to “Chocolate Chip Mandel Bread” as a staple on the annual seder dessert menu. (Let me know if you try this recipe. I would love to hear your review.) You can make it plain or add a whipped cream or cream cheese frosting to top off the recipe. Either way, it’s delicious!
- Passover is a celebration of freedom, which I find particularly relevant this year as both Ukraine and Israel are fighting for theirs. In New York State, the Presidential Primary Election is April 2nd. Some of us might be tempted not to vote as most of us can predict the outcome and may feel it is not worth our time. Please fight this urge! We are blessed to have the freedom to vote and we should not take it for granted. Make your voice heard!
- April is also a time of renewal. Although Spring technically began in March, we really begin to feel the season in April (well at least prior to climate change this was the norm), as the leaves return to the trees and the flowers bloom. I take longer outdoor walks and try to focus on the wonders of nature. Somehow the season just makes me happier.
- On Sunday, April 7th following Religious School, Sisterhood will host its Annual Women’s Seder, led by Rabbi Sheinberg and Cantor Friedlander. All women congregants are invited to bring their mothers, daughters, and friends of all ages. Religious School Families are encouraged to participate. Please consider attending this wonderful community event.
- On Saturday, April 13th, Sisterhood is sponsoring a Comedy Night. They will bring in 4 - 5 comics to entertain us in a comedy club type environment. Please get your reservations in early as this event is likely to sell out.
- Temple Tikvah is again joining with Lake Success Jewish Center for the second night of Passover Seder. If you are interested, please see the above flyer or look in the Weekly Update for more information.
Wishing everyone a joyous Passover...Chag Sameach!
Our Students Were Led by Rabbi Sheinberg & Our Song Leader, Kathryn Kitt on March 13th

As We Recite and Tell the Story of Passover We Express the Values of Our Culture, So That Each Generation May Learn and Remember What is Central to Our Story
- We had a lot of fun at our Purim Carnival! Thank you to Rachel Lefkof and Gael Kramer for organizing the celebration; to Hayley Di Rico and Kathryn Kitt for organizing and running the amazing photo and karaoke booths, respectively; to all the parents and madrichim that volunteered to help set up and run the activities!!
- During April, we will study the Middot Koach Hadibbur which means what we say to others ~ “Appreciating the power of speech is a foundational value in Jewish culture…We study the power of speech so we may distinguish between the way Abraham argues with God (righteous chutzpah) versus how Haman manipulates the king and policy (malicious self-interest). We want our people to reject lashon hara, evil speech and slander, and instead be the children of the prophets, speaking truth to power and defending the voice of the vulnerable. We give a lot of emphasis to being a community that strives to repair the world, tikkun. But a prerequisite for tikkun olam and the most important tool for that is self-repair, tikkun atzmi repair is carefully considered words."
- Mazel Tov to the Bolandakhtari Family on the upcoming Bar Mitzvah of their son Ryan on Saturday, April 6th!
- Please join us on Friday, April 12th for our Grades 2 - 3 Family Dinner and Service. The following students will lead us: Benjamin Braunstein, Charles Braunstein, Charlotte Di Rico, Ethan Di Rico, Sarah Escobar, Benjamin Jones, Spencer Kramer, Ellis Lavoie, Amitai Marsh, Aiden Miller, and Luca Muto.
- On Sunday, April 14th we will hold our School-wide Model Seder for Passover. Our Brotherhood will be in the kitchen cooking up delicious matzah brie! Thank you Brotherhood!!
There will be no Religious School Sunday, April 21st and Sunday, April 28th. The first Passover Seder is Monday, April 22nd.
P.J. Library to The Rescue!
- My name is Ryan and I was born on May 29th 2010 and I will become a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, April 6th 2024. I have one younger sister named Ronica. I play the clarinet in school and my overall grades are good. I go to swimming classes and have a black belt in taekwondo. I also enjoy watching sports - I follow all the Minnesota sport teams, because when my dad first came to America, he went to Minnesota and attended the UOM (University of Minnesota). I also enjoy hanging out with my family and playing games with my friends.
- I started Hebrew School when I was in 7th grade. At first I didn't like it, however by the end I enjoyed it. I also only started Bar Mitzvah lessons 6 months ago! I am glad I got to do this and I'm glad my Dad pushed me. Being a Bar Mitzvah means a lot to me, because I now feel I have more of a Jewish identity instead of Judaism just being my religion.
TIKVAH TOTS
Family Holiday Traditions
- One knows you have a great Passover recipe when you have requests for it year round. My family hosts Thanksgiving annually. My Jamaican born in-laws come to celebrate and we cook way too much food, which is a combination of Jamaican dishes, such as curry goat and rice and peas, and the traditional American fare, like turkey and stuffing. I also make Passover Apple Pudding (although I substitute the matzah for a sleeve of crushed up ritz crackers when bread is not forbidden). One year I decided not to make this dish since we always have so many leftovers and there were going to be fewer guests. My father in-law arrived and one of the first things he said was, “Where is the apple thing I love?” He was not pleased to find out there was none that year and I promised myself not to make that mistake again. So hopefully you can enjoy this yummy treat that has become a family favorite. It is a great recipe to make with young children as they can crack up the matzah into messy bits, pour in the many ingredients, and mix to their heart’s content. See below for the full recipe.
Together We Celebrated Purim and Learned the Significance of the Holiday Lies Not So Much in How it Began, but in What It has Become, a Thankful and Joyous Affirmation of Jewish Survival and the Continuity of Our History (reformjudaism.org)
We Topped Off Our Celebration of Purim the next day with a Festive Carnival!
REMEMBER TO MARK YOUR CALENDARS: * The Temple Book Club will next meet on Monday, April 8th at 7:30pm to review The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak...a novel that tells the story of two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided Cyprus, who fall in love during the 1974 Cypriot Civil War. The novel explores the themes of identity, memory, and belonging in a land that has been shaped by different occupations and administrations. (Goodreads)
*PLEASE NOTE: The Afternoon & Evening Book Clubs have merged to one meeting per month. The meetings will be the second Monday of each month. The ZOOM LINK will be in the Weekly Update and will be the same LINK for the entire year.

The next Temple Writing Group meeting is on Tuesday, April 9th at 7:30pm.
BROTHERHOOD
Let’s Celebrate the Freedom of Passover Together and Honor Our History!
- With Passover on the horizon, here is some background on the holiday: Passover observes the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt, and their transition from slavery to freedom. The main ritual of Passover is the seder. Seders happen on the first two nights of the holiday with festive meals with the re-telling of the Exodus through stories and song and eating traditional ritual foods. These rituals and other readings are outlined in the Haggadah. Although the central Passover practice is a set of intense dietary changes, mainly the absence of hametz or foods with leaven, not all of us are traditional. (My Jewish Learning) Yet that does not mean this holiday’s essential message - one of freedom and the will to persevere with faith against all odds - is not appreciated by our tribe and people of all faiths. (Rabbi Barry Altman)
- I would like to share a recipe that my wife Michele, my favorite chef prepares each year.
- Brotherhood News: • We hope you purchased wine during our Pre-Passover Wine Tasting Event or purchased some online. Either way, your wine orders will soon be ready to be picked up at Lake Success Wines in the Lake Success Shopping Center or delivered by one of our Brothers. • Yom Hashoah will be commemorated this year on May 5th. The full name of the day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust is “Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah“ - literally the “Day of (Remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism”. It is marked on the 27th day in the month of Nisan - a week after the seventh day of Passover, and a week before Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for Israel’s fallen soldiers)...(My Jewish Learning) Once again Brotherhood will be selling the Yom Hashoah Yellow Memorial Candles. Look for more information in the Weekly Updates.
Until next month...
SISTERHOOD
Let’s Rejoice Our Blessings
- At least fifty years ago my mother brought home a copy of Elegant Essence, a cookbook created by the Sisterhood of East Northport Jewish Center. This was before the Sisterhood of Temple Emanuel of NHP published their first (of several) cookbooks. Within Elegant Essence my mother found a kugel recipe for Passover. This farfel recipe is as delicious as any sweet noodle kugel that I have ever had. It became a must have each Passover. And I have given the recipe to so many friends that I have lost count.
Sisterhood Wishes Everyone a Zissen Pesach!
We Hope to See You at the Below Upcoming Events: • April 7th - Women’s Seder • April 13th - Comedy Night • May 3rd - Sisterhood Shabbat • June 6th - End of Year Dinner

SOCIAL ACTION
Who Says Eight Days of Dietary Restrictions Need to Make Our Lives Less Delicious?
- At Social Action we decided to look for recipes that might not be familiar to most Ashkenazi Jews. Here are two we look forward to enjoying very soon. Elaine Brooks remembered the first as one that came from the Greek Jewish woman who taught Hebrew to the 1989 B’nai Mitzvah Class at Temple Israel. The second recipe came from Joe Kirschner’s sister’s Iraqi in-laws.
- Check the Weekly Update for future Social Action meeting dates and events. Please feel free to contact the Social Action Committee by clicking on the LINK below with any questions or ideas you may have.
A very Happy Passover to all!
Lifelong Learning
Celebrating Pesach for Jews with a Sweet Tooth
- I have been leading seders for the past 30 years or so. I love the narration of the Exodus, as well as relevant selections from Jewish life over the past 2,000 years. Yet here’s a little secret: After about an hour or so into the seder, I love saying these words Shulchan Oreich, the meal is served!” My wife, children, and friends contribute to the meal each year; however everyone depends on my wife for this dessert treat: “Matzoh Crackle”. Here’s the recipe. Your guests will love it!
- Lunch & Learn: Rabbi’s Course: "God for Grownups" - Are you an atheist? An agnostic? A spiritual seeker looking to deepen your faith? Many of us struggle with the idea of God and our relationship to God because we are stuck with the images we learned as children. In this 3-part course, we will explore some of the many metaphors by which the Jewish faith describes the Divine, so that we can emerge with a richer, more fully informed, and more relatable concept of God.
- Join Rabbi Sheinberg for her course, "God for Grownups" on Saturday April 13th at 11:30am for lunch. The program will start around NOON. We will meet in-person in the Harris Beber Auditorium and on ZOOM. The next two seminars will be on Thursday evenings, April 18th and May 2nd. Please see the flyer below for times and location, as well as the LINKS to R.S.V.P. for this course and to contact Meryl if you have any questions. The Weekly Updates will have all of the online connections.
- Torah Study: Weekly Torah Study with Rabbi Sheinberg continues every Saturday morning. We began studying the Book of Leviticus, Vayikra, towards the end of March. We will continue with Vayikra through early June. All sessions are on ZOOM beginning at 9:00am, and last 1 hour (give or take some minutes) except for Torah Study Plus. This usually meets one Saturday per month and is both in-person at the synagogue and on ZOOM. These Torah Study Plus sessions begin at 9:30am and typically last about 90 minutes. Be sure to check the Weekly Update for start times and the ZOOM connection.
- A Special Saturday Shabbat Service on May 11th: Beginning at 10:30am, there will be a special Shabbat morning service. Several Temple members will be called up to chant from the Torah. We invite the congregation to join in this celebration of Torah. The volunteers have been receiving training from the Rabbi and Cantor and will be ready to amaze you with their words, melodies, and joy. Be sure to check the Weekly Update for start times and the ZOOM connection.
Happy Spring & Happy Passover!
