About the Brass Band
The Ohio Valley British Brass Band was founded in February 1992 by Francis Laws and the late Ed Nickol. Nickol was OVBBB conductor until January 2009. Michael Gallehue took over the baton from 2009 through Summer 2017, when Greg Mills served as the conductor through 2023. Since January 2024, Matt Spradlin has served as the Conductor.
The 45-member ensemble is comprised of professional musicians, active as well as retired educators at the secondary and collegiate levels, students, and lay people from the Ohio Valley region.
The band’s mission is to perform a variety of worthwhile and engaging literature while providing an opportunity for the area’s finest brass players to participate in a quality musical ensemble.
Since its inception the OVBBB has played extensively throughout southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky, including featured performances with the Cincinnati Pops and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestras.
The OVBBB has also performed for the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference, the American School Band Directors Association State Convention, and was the keynote performing ensemble at the Wisconsin Brass Band Festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Over the past twenty-five years, the OVBBB has been joined by guest performers of local, national, and international acclaim, including trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzuti, John Philip Sousa IV (great grandson of the famous American composer and bandmaster) and Steven Bulla, who was commissioned by the OVBBB, to write "Valley of the Adena", a brass band composition to commemorate OVBBB's 25th anniversary (Bulla conducted the OVBBB at the world premiere.)
The band plays a variety of musical repertoire, appropriate and suitable to its audience—including marches, overtures, show tunes, light classics, popular music, and patriotic selections. The OVBBB is a non-profit corporation, organized exclusively for charitable and educational activities, under section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. As such, all donations made to the band are tax deductible. Please support YOUR OVBBB with your donation/sponsorship! donate
ABOUT THE WILMINGTON BAND PROGRAM
The Instrumental Music Program in the Wilmington City Schools consists of over 200 students in grades 6-12. Students begin in the Band Program on an instrument in homogeneous classes during their 6th grade year. After one year the students have the opportunity to continue their band experience throughout middle school in the 7th and 8th Grade Bands. Each of these bands performs regular concerts throughout the year as well as giving performances at school assemblies. The 8th Grade Band has a long tradition of performing in adjudicated events throughout Southwest Ohio. Both the 7th and 8th Grade Band students participate in Solo and Ensemble contests every year.
The Bands at the High School consist of two concert Bands, The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, and the Jazz Band, Marching Band and Pep Band. The Symphonic Band is open to any High School student who wishes to play in the band program. The Wind Ensemble is an audition group of accomplished High School musicians and serves as the premiere instrumetnal ensemble. The Wind Ensemble has been selected to perform at the OMEA Professional Development conference in 2009, 2011, and 2026, and has premiered works by Frank Ticheli, John Mackey, Barry Kopetz, and Onsby Rose. Both the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble perform a regular concert series throughout the school year and give special performances in school assemblies and community events. These Bands have a strong history of performances in OMEA Adjudicated Events.
The High School is proud to offer Jazz Band to students who wish to study jazz composers, jazz styles, and improvisational skills. The Jazz Band meets as an after-school program during the Spring Semester.
The Wilmington High School Marching Band, the “PRIDE” of Wilmington is an all extra-curricular activity and follows school eligibility rules where students must maintain a certain level of academic achievement to continue their participation. This band performs at all High School Varsity Football games, local community events, and Adjudicated events.
The High School also offers the opportunity for students to play in the Pep Band. This extra-curricular group meets during the winter season and performs for High School Basketball games and school events
