Happy November! The gardens are all changing rapidly- in part due to our much cooler weather but mostly due to the intrepid work of our four garden staff and multiple dedicated volunteers on site! They've been working hard over the last two weeks to change the Carraway, Latham, Kellenberger, Stanly and Dixon gardens over to spring bulbs planted beneath winter annuals! This year expect colorful Sweet William (Dianthus interspecific), Violas (Violas) and Snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus)! These beauties will also last the whole fall/ winter/ spring duration but also provide some new height and color to many of our gardens.
On the note of new things, we're getting ready to switch gears and head massively into all things decor and Candlelight starting the first full week of November! We'll be creating beautiful decorations for all of our buildings and exteriors with the help of a talented volunteer crew and preparing to host Candlelight in December! For more details on all the amazing tours and events happening this holiday season, check out the Holidays Happenings section and our calendar!
Before you too get deeply into the holiday festivities, don't forget to join us November 11th for our final 2023 Garden Lecture featuring our Research Historian, Lindy Cummings exploring the history of Tryon Palace’s modern landscape. From the vision of the 1950s reconstruction to the major discovery in the 1990s that prompted new archaeological exploration, this lecture will touch on the major high points of the gardens’ 60- year history.
If you’re looking for an outside hobby and way to give back to your community, consider joining us as a garden volunteer! We are looking for volunteers for pruning, planting, raking, mulching, watering, weeding. It’s a great way to learn some gardening tips and tricks, especially for our area! If that sounds like your cup of tea, please contact me at hadley.cheris@dncr.nc.gov.
We hope to see you soon! Happy Gardening,
Hadley Merizalde Cheris, Tryon Palace Director of Facilities and Gardens
