A Better World Needs All Of Us February 2026 Edition

Loving our neighbours this Lent

This Lent, as we are called to prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we are accompanying families like Rejoice’s in South Sudan, Shorai and Hamunyare’s in Zimbabwe, and Obayedul’s in Bangladesh  - who are facing hunger as droughts and floods destroy crops. Communities are leading local responses to climate challenges, supported by local partners, CAFOD and its supporters.

There is a human story behind every Fast Day envelope you hand out in your parish.

Do you have facilities to show a video in your church? Show our Parish Appeal Film in church or share on parish social media pages.

In Zimbabwe, husband and wife team Shorai and Hamunyare worked with our local experts to establish a sustainable, water conserving vegetable garden, made possible by the installation of a solar-powered water pump, which powers a drip irrigation system – enabling the community to grow more food and store water for longer during a drought. Hamunyare said: “We are very happy we can now give our children vegetables.”

Family Fast Day in your parish

encounter makes the biggest difference

As we prepare for Lent:

  • Make plans to hand Fast Day envelopes to parishioners as they arrive at Mass and thank people when they donate in the collection.
  • Ask your parish priest about speaking at Mass and holding the Fast Day collection.
  • Check that your parish office is placing a Lent Appeal notice in the parish newsletter.

Ash Wednesday

a simple welcome — and a great moment to connect

Ash Wednesday Masses often bring people we don’t see regularly at Sunday Masses.  This Lent, if you are attending Ash Wednesday Mass, please do hand out our new Ash Wednesday bookmark to any visitors or new parishioners you see.   Offering these as people arrive or leave Mass serves as an invitation to live Lent with us - through prayer, fasting and giving.

On Shrove Tuesday, why not flip the recipe on pancakes?

Bring the vibrant flavours of Nigeria into your kitchen with a delicious twist on the classic pancake. Watch Chef Olayemi Adelekan – MasterChef UK 2022 semi-finalist – as she shares her irresistible recipe for Nigerian Puff Puff. Made with a similar batter to pancakes, these golden bites are the perfect alternative for Shrove Tuesday.  Olayemi’s Puff Puffs are guaranteed to leave you wanting more. So, let’s cook, share, and celebrate our faith, food and global community together!

We have walked in silence and in song, alone and together. We have walked with laughter and in prayer, with friends old and new, strangers who became companions, and with our faithful pets by our side. This Lent, every step you inspire others to take is a quiet witness of hope. As we walk in communion with our sisters and brothers in the Global South, we honour their wisdom, their courage, and the leadership they share with us.

Walking Together This Year

We’ve created a calendar to show all the wonderful ways you can help parishioners get involved with CAFOD throughout the year. Take a look, and please do write to us if you have any questions or ideas—you are at the heart of bringing these activities to life.
