JMU Employer Newsletter Fall 2024

Happy Fall Everyone!

The air is a little crisper and the leaves are starting to change on campus. The semester is quickly flying by. I hope you all are enjoying a little slower pace at this time of year after a very busy start to the fall recruiting season. It was wonderful to see so many employers on campus this September for the career fairs we hosted at JMU.

Our University Career Fair was the largest ever with 88 employers on the first day and 80 companies on the second day. Over 2,000 students attended over both days. The Atlantic Union Bank Center (AUBC) was a great new venue for us, as it allowed for more employers to attend.

We are gearing up for the spring recruiting season here and would love to have you back on campus in 2025. All of our career fair registrations go live on Nov. 1, 2024. You can also make your on-campus interview registrations, information table and information session requests starting that day. The popular dates around career fairs get reserved quickly, so don't hesitate to make your requests as soon as you can.

Some dates to keep in mind as you plan out your recruiting events:

  • Thanksgiving Break: Nov. 23 - Dec. 1
  • Finals Week: Dec. 7-13

If you are planning on hosting an information table, information session, or conducting on-campus interviews it's not too late to visit campus this fall. Please make your requests in Handshake and the Employer Services Team will work with you on all the logistics.

Our Employer Services Team is here to help as you plan your recruiting strategy at JMU. If you have questions about recruiting or just want to consult about your current strategy, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team.

All the best, Laura

Laura Hickerson, Associate Director for Employer Relations

Career Communities

The UCC unveiled a Career Communities model this fall. Career Communities are a grouping of loosely related industry and job function areas, with one or more UCC Champions from the Career Advising and Employer Services teams. The goal of Career Communities is to provide a framework for students to learn about the world of work and to recognize how numerous academic disciplines can prepare students for a specific industry or set of job roles. You will notice that in registering for the University Career Fair, you'll be asked to align your registration with one or more career community. Newsletters curated for each community will be sent out once or twice a month.

Here are the 10 JMU Career Communities:

  • Arts, Communications, & Entertainment
  • Education & Training
  • Health Sciences
  • Hospitality & Tourism
  • Management, Operations, Human Resources, & Finance
  • Public Service, Law, & Government

Campus Spotlight

Center for Global Engagement

The Center for Global Engagement is an on-campus office that ensures international students have a smooth transition to the United States and JMU. They are also home of Study Abroad programs that send hundreds of students to be immersed into new cultures and gain new perspectives each semester.

Katie Sensabaugh, Director of Study Abroad, talks about how students that study abroad can bring a diverse skill set that is beneficial to the workplace:

"Students have the unique opportunity to enhance their soft skills- qualities that are increasingly desired in the workplace. Studies show that students who study abroad have increased skills in interpersonal communication, are better problem-solvers, are more curious and resilient, and have more self-direction. "

Katie states cultural complexities and moments where things did not go as planned are an inevitable part of the study abroad experience. "Out of these moments of adversity come immense learning that is seldom apparent in traditional on-campus classroom settings. And because of this experiential learning, students come back from their study abroad as more confident, competent, and complex thinkers".

Katie encourages employers to pay extra attention to candidates that have studied abroad while searching for new employees. She advises asking about the experience and how it makes them a great hire. "I'm sure they'll have a story or two to tell" she states.
