SME Nature-Positive Finance Achieving benefits for the environment through environmental investment and reporting

Business development is a dynamic landscape and securing external financing is often a crucial stepping stone for growth. Encouraging greener investment can embed the environment as a key driver in encouraging positive outcomes by investing in the future.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of goals and related indicators that seek to support transitions to a more sustainable society. The Taskforce on Nature-Related Disclosures (TNFD) is an important collaboration between leading financiers and experts in nature-based financing that aims to shape investment to more nature-positive futures. However, to date, there has been little mapping between the two. Many of these indicators are closely aligned and there must be greater transparency of how these indicators sit alongside one another so that they can be used by different sectors, organisational types, entities of different sizes and those that operate in different contexts.

Here you can view the fantastic work of Middlesex University PhD Student, Nia Nejatali who reviewed the alignment between the TNFD and the SDGs. Nia's exemplary work highlights the important relationship between these different indicator sets and how such a visual depiction can help to support greater consolidation of indicator sets by SMEs and their financiers, as well as help build an understanding of relevant sustainability indicators more widely.

This research was carried out by Nia as part of her PhD research in sustainable asset management in industrial buildings. It has been used to support the SME Nature Positive Finance project, which is a collaboration with:
