Our Intent at Swinton Queen

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject, using creativity, imagination and logic. At Swinton Queen Primary, we want pupils to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.

In line with the National Curriculum, we want pupils to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. Design and Technology is a very cross curricular subject – drawing on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. With enterprise opportunities children are able to children are able to design a product or service and research their competitors. They can cost their products to ensure they will make a profit and take on the responsibility for the advertising and selling of their completed goods.

Teaching should allow children to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through key concepts, pupils, including those with SEND, will become confident and proficient in using a variety of techniques and skills. By evaluating past and present technology they will be able to gain an understanding of its impact on the wider world.

Our Implementation at Swinton Queen.

We plan for Design and Technology using the National Curriculum objectives to ensure a thorough approach. We teach Design and Technology through three key concepts:

  • Food and Nutrition
  • Construction – Structures and Textiles
  • Mechanisms – Electrical and Mechanical

These key concepts form building blocks of progress in terms of knowledge, skills and understanding and the children progress through school. Each term will focus on one key concept in detail in order to build our children’s learning. Each time a new unit is introduced, the children will make links to their prior learning. Children with SEND have full access to the Design and Technology curriculum with support to enable them access the learning and make individual progress. Supporting learners with SEND by using scaffolds, sentence stems, chunking tasks and peer-support as appropriate.

The National Curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Essential Knowledge for a Designer

  • Knowledge of processes, materials, tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of designers and makers.
  • Knowledge of health and safety.

Essential Skills for a Designer

  • The ability to carry out research for a design.
  • The ability to produce innovative ideas and creative products.
  • The ability to critically evaluate their own work and that of others.
