The 3rd Annual Aggies READ Book Festival hosted by Dr. Watkins will take place on April 26, 2025, from 10am- 2 p.m. Organized by the NC A&T Literacy Scholars from the Educator Preparation Department in the College of Education, this community-centered event aims to promote literacy by engaging children and families through storytelling, author and illustrator sessions, music, face painting, and interactive literacy activities.
Dr. Kellee D. Watkins, Ph.D., is currently an Assistant Professor at NC A&T State University from 2018-present. She is located in Greensboro, NC, and has a love for literacy, equity, and aiding in the attainment of best practices for educators of diverse learners.
Dr. Watkins holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from Livingstone College and a Master’s in Education and a Ph.D. in Reading, Language, and K-12 Literacy from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Watkins also holds numerous education certifications from various institutions as well.
Her research focuses on identifying effective reading programs for K–5 learners in Title I schools. Highlighting her strong connection to educational practices and her commitment to discovering what truly benefits both educators and students.
Currently, Dr. Watkins teaches reading courses at NC A&T but also researches various topics ranging from English Language Arts, Curriculum Standards, Professionalization of Teachers, and Equity in the Classroom. Watkins also takes a special interest in culturally and verbally diverse learners. She was previously a teacher, academic coach, curriculum coordinator, and master practitioner at Livingstone College.
Beyond her professional career, Dr. Watkins was inducted into the Livingstone College Athletic Hall of Fame, first in 2006 for Track & Field (Class of ’95), and again in 2014. Additionally, she played a pivotal role as an assistant coach in leading her team to a CIAA Basketball Championship in 2000.
Dr. Watkins continues to make a meaningful impact on the educational landscape through her dedicated instruction and mentorship, as well as her strong advocacy for equity and inclusion within education.
