About Me:

Hi there! My name is Daniella Tobias Zamora. I've been in journalism classes in high school for the last three years and I'm choosing to pursue journalism and broadcasting as my future career. I believe journalism is not only entertainment for me but it's stories of life put in one. I love the idea of bringing people's voices together and capturing unexplainable moments of emotions in a picture. I want to contribute to my community and be a storyteller for those who feel their voices are unheard and live in the shadows. I'm very passionate about journalism and telling stories of people in my community.

Starting in the year 2010, school shootings have risen consistently across the country, with 346 in 2023 alone. With a lengthy history of gun violence, citizens and teachers of Colorado are seeing a rise in weapons training for teachers and staff.

Academy School District 20 in Colorado Springs has taken into consideration the training of teachers for the use of firearms. The general public has found many pros and cons with this pending firearm training. Senior Dulce Rodriguez says she sees a need for the training, “The pros could be found when we’re in a bad situation and it’s truly essential for our safety. It could also help them find confidence in caring for us and for our safety.”

Many questions have been brought to light when it comes to teachers handling concealed firearms. More specifically, how the armed people would be able to keep their weapons out of the hands of students. Students also have mixed opinions on if they would feel safe knowing that teachers are armed in their school. Social studies teacher Kyle Brink says he feels weapons training is a necessary tool to keep students safe. He believes there could be a way to ensure gun safety if and when weapons are allowed on campus, “It would kind of have to come down to not really knowing what people in the school were armed, or four teachers to five different teachers are. We would have to be kept anonymous as to who has it.”

Since District 20 consideration in training teachers is happening close to the Englewood School District, the talks about arming teachers and other topics involving firearms have been floating through the air, “it’s more and more students having talks about firearms,” Rodriguez said.

Another question that has been asked time and time again is if bringing more weapons into the equations will provide a solution. Social studies teacher Sean Stetler is against guns in schools. He says weapons training would add more stress to his already busy teacher life and he believes more guns don’t equal more safety, “In this country, our solution to gun violence always seems to be more guns. And I don’t think that’s necessarily a strategy that is going to lead to less violence.”

Hello and welcome to pirateTV. I’m Bri Martinez, I’m Molly Huglund, and I’m Daniella Tobias.

We have a lot to get to today, including a look at the biggest scam facing teens’ rights now and how to avoid it, how Englewood district is keeping teachers and staff, and how Englewood supports its new English language learners.

We begin with the alarming rise in the number of high school students who are victims of an online scam called, sextortion. This is the practice of extorting money after an explicit photo is sent online, most often, on Instagram. David Claveria tells us about the issue and has information on what to do if you find yourself a victim.

There are continued safety concerns at high schools across Colorado and in response, some school districts are activating teachers and staff and training them to carry weapons. This move most recently happened in Colorado Springs Academy School District 20 where teachers are going through a training program that would allow them to carry guns on campuses. PirateTV wondered how teachers and students feel about this situation. Danny Tobias has our story.

When living in a country that is constantly developing AI technology, it can be hard to keep up with what Artificial Intelligence can do exactly. From realistic photos and videos to being able to mimic someone’s voice, AI technology has vastly spread as both a tool and a weapon in one of the places it’s argued most; the education system, most notably, the classroom. We learn about what Englewood teachers and tech experts think about the technology.

Englewood schools have seen a small uptick in students new to Colorado who came with their families from volatile countries. These students tell us how Englewood supports them in their lives and in their education.

At the end of last school year, several of your favorite teachers left for other opportunities. There are many things contributing to teachers not wanting to stay in the school environment. However, Englewood Schools has a strategic plan to keep more educators in classrooms. Simone Avitia has our story.

Many Englewood athletes are struggling with finding rides to games after learning of the shortage of bus drivers in Englewood and around the country.

Seniors! If you’re interested in speaking or singing during the graduation ceremony the tryouts will be soon, April 24th. Please make sure you are planning an outline for your speech so that you are prepared for tryouts.

In sports, spring sports are well underway. Girls soccer, tennis, track, golf, and baseball have seen a few games moved due to the spring storms, but nicer weather should allow teams to get games played.

Homecoming Kick-Off

With hallways and classrooms all decked in pink, it is clear Homecoming Week 2023 has arrived. Months of planning by student leadership were put into the week-long event. In this story, you can scroll through the events by clicking on each day. EHS Media students will update this post with exciting videos and pictures as they become available.

Senior Jaliyah Mora is on the student Government team and came up with the theme for Homecoming, “I think everybody likes it and a lot of people voted on it too. Especially because it’s a trend."

She loves a lot of things about Homecoming, “I think homecoming week is very special because it’s a tradition and we’re trying to start more traditions, more school spirit, and it just makes the school year fun.”

Englewood High School has a lengthy history of Homecoming traditions. Recently, we scanned over old yearbooks and conducted interviews to gain information on homecoming at Englewood as well as how much our students know about EHS homecoming.

Lila Downing has been with Englewood High School for almost three decades and remembers how homecoming used to be, “We did them just bigger, grander.”

Englewood High School has a wide variety of after-school events to bring the students together during homecoming week. First is Powderpuff which switches the roles as girls play football and the boys cheer them on. Right after that is the bonfire that is built with wood and lit by the fire department as students gather and watch the flame grow.

A few days later is the homecoming football game, the biggest game of the year. Then, the day students wait for all week, the homecoming dance, where playful music blares and students dance around with friends. All of these events have a huge impact on our school.

Summary

Usually journalism and "the media" are seen as biased, but in journalism class, I learned that you have to stand for all sides of the story and not spread false or inaccurate information. Journalism should give everyone a fair shot at speaking out. It is an opportunity to bring to light important issues and events around the world.
