About UKBIC
The UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) is a pioneering facility driving the development of battery technology to support the transition to a greener future.
What they do:
UKBIC bridges the critical gap between battery technologies that have shown promise at laboratory or prototype scale and the successful, cost-effective mass production required for commercial deployment.
Located in Coventry, this publicly funded battery product development centre is open to manufacturers, entrepreneurs, researchers and educators. Any organisation with existing or emerging battery technology that has the potential to deliver green jobs and economic growth in the UK can access its state-of-the-art facilities.
UKBIC plays a vital role within the Faraday Battery Challenge (FBC), a Government initiative designed to accelerate the development of cost-effective, high-performance, durable, safe, lightweight and recyclable batteries.
Funding:
UKBIC receives funding through the Faraday Battery Challenge, delivered by UK Research and Innovation and the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, and is also part-funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority. The project was delivered through a consortium consisting of Coventry City Council, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and WMG at the University of Warwick. UKBIC was established in 2018 following a competition led by the Advanced Propulsion Centre with support from Innovate UK.
Why does UKBIC exist?
The UK's demand for gigafactories, which are large-scale battery manufacturing facilities, is rapidly increasing due to the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market. Estimates suggest the UK will need the equivalent of six gigafactories (20 GWh capacity each) by 2030 and potentially ten by 2040 to meet battery demand
Location
Located at Rowley Road, Baginton, just outside Coventry by the A45/A46 junction, UKBIC combines advanced manufacturing, lab, and office space with excellent accessibility to the Midlands road network
Their address is: UKBIC, Rowley Road, Baginton, Coventry, CV8 3AL
The Team
The UK Battery Industrialisation Centre includes leading industry professionals from manufacturing, the automotive industry and the emerging battery sector, excited to be part of the electrification revolution that is vital for protecting our people and planet for generations to come.
The UKBIC team are highly capable team players and passionate problem-solvers, focussed on working together to develop the best way to produce breakthrough technology at high volume.
Atmosphere & Environment
The building is conveniently located on the outskirts of Coventry on the A45. It has ample parking for all the employees, including disabled access parking, EV charging points and a bicycle rack.
As you enter the building through the main reception area you are greeted by a large glass window with an open view of the manufacturing/ production area. On your right is an Employee and Guests Cafe/ Lounge area and on the left, there are "Campaign rooms" for businesses to set up a "base" for onsite meetings etc...
The upstairs portion consists of very modern offices and mini-meeting "hubs". There's an open kitchen area for easy access to tea and coffee making facilities and a selection of unisex toilets (these are separated into very private individual cubicles).
The main production area is very large and well-spaced out. It has been designed with room to grow. It's very clean with state of the art equipment.

UKBIC's Mission/ Vision
Through focused capabilities, UKBIC will enable industry, via open access, to scale up and commercialise advanced technologies central to the development and manufacture of batteries, initially for the automotive sector but with wider applications.
ADVANCED MANUFACTURING
UKBIC are committed to enabling the development of the next generation of battery systems across the electrode, cell, module and pack levels to allow companies to move to full scale, high volume battery manufacturing (i.e. ‘Gigafactories’) and high volume electric vehicle production as subsequent investments.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Through industrial collaboration, UKBIC will accelerate opportunities for the most promising early and mid-stage research and development activities to feed through into scale-up and commercial exploitation.
