Drama news
Year 7 creative movement workshops
This week, local performance artist, actor, director, musician, movement artist, rapper and theatre practitioner Mitch King visited Byron Bay High School to run creative movement workshops with our Year 7 Drama students.
Year 7 Drama classes have been studying the use of mask and body movement in cultures around the world and have begun working on their final project.
The project will be movement-based, masked, group-devised performance, where they communicate their connection to place and culture through choreographed movement, individually designed masks and accompanied by lighting and sound.
Mitch’s workshop took students through sensory and somatic experiences and saw them expressing their connection to place and culture through their bodies and collaboratively creating movement sequences. The students thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with movement techniques that will directly assist them to develop and create their group performances.
We also enjoyed an impromptu rap from Mitch at the end of one of the sessions!

State Surfing success!
Ocea and Amelia secure a place on the podium
Congratulations to Ocea C (Year 11) and Amelia M (Year 8) who recently represented BBHS at the NSW VW State Classic 2025 High Schools Championships in Coffs Harbour, against some of the best young surfers in NSW.
Competing in the Open Girls division, the girls took out an amazing 3rd place, which is a huge effort considering Amelia is only in Year 8!
Well done girls and thanks for representing our school. We’re so proud of Ocea and Amelia's talent, dedication and determination in the water – the future is bright for these rising stars!
FNC Cross Country qualifiers
A huge 41 BBHS students qualify for the North Coast Cross Country Championships
Perfect weather and a beautiful home track made for an outstanding day at this year’s Far North Coast (FNC) Cross Country event, held here at Byron Bay High School. Our home-ground advantage certainly paid off, with an impressive 41 students qualifying for the North Coast Cross Country Championships, to be held in Nana Glen on 13 June.

Jere is the MVP!
North Coast Opens Basketball Team
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Jere I on his recent basketball success. Jere represented the North Coast at the NSW CHS State Boys Basketball Championships in Sydney.
Despite a tough tournament and strong competition, Jere’s performance throughout the week was outstanding. His efforts were recognised with the Most Valued Player (MVP) award for the North Coast team - what a fantastic achievement!
Jere has been a valued member of the North Coast Basketball team since Year 9, and this marks a fitting conclusion to his high school basketball journey.
Thank you Jere, for proudly representing Byron Bay High School on the CHS stage. We wish you all the best in your future basketball endeavours!

ASX Schools Sharemarket 2025 Game 1
More trading success for our Byron Bay High School students
In the first ASX Schools Sharemarket Game of 2025, 100 Byron Bay High School students have developed their knowledge and understanding of financial markets and taken the plunge by investing $50,000 into their own virtual portfolios of shares.
As in the previous games, Byron Bay High School students had a very high profile on the national stage, with 50 students rising into the top 100 ranked traders in March.
Sharemarket education classes have been delivered in Commerce and Business Studies classes. In addition, lunchtime meetings have enabled students from all Year groups, including a strong contingent from Years 7 and 8, to learn about the nature of the financial markets, plus some strategies, techniques and practical considerations involved in trading shares.
Our students’ greater level of financial knowledge, in comparison to many other students their own age, will set them up for every success in their future lives; giving them a foundation to invest and profit from the financial markets that play a huge role in shaping the modern world.
The educational experience of this Game extended to being a part of the largest market fluctuations since the Covid shutdown period. The announcement of US trade tariffs and the subsequent panic on world markets led to sharp falls in students’ share portfolios during the middle stages of the game. However, by staying calm and by only making necessary share sales, most of our students’ shares rebounded strongly after the panic on world share markets passed, with a clear majority of our students finishing the game with strong profits in their share portfolios.
We are immensely proud of all of the students at Byron Bay High School who develop their skills in share trading in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game. I look forward to preparing another large group of students early in Term 3 for the Second Game of 2025 that commences trading in August.
As in the past, we look forward to Byron Bay High School continuing as a school of excellence in financial markets trading.

Can your family host a Japanese student?
We still need more BBHS families to host a Japanese student in Term 3!
We are still seeking more families to host Japanese students from Okutama from Sunday 27 July to Wednesday 6 August. This is a unique and valuable cultural experience that we offer each year and will involve Byron Bay High School families hosting a Japanese student in their home.
Students who host will be invited to a variety of fun excursions and events, and host families will also receive a small payment to assist with the cost of hosting the student.
If you are interested in finding our more about this initiative please email Mr Humphreys through our school office: byronbay-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Our TOP 3 reminders for parents and carers
1. What do I need to do if my child is absent from school?
When your child is absent or late to school, please wait for the ‘absence sms’ that we will send you around 11 am. Unless you have urgent information to pass on, there is no need to call or email the school office to let us know - simply reply to the sms with the reason why your child is away from school and your response will be automatically entered into our Attendance system for the teachers to see.
2. What happens if we are planning on going away?
Families are encouraged to travel during the school holidays. If travel during the school term is necessary and your child will be away for 5 or more school days, you will need to submit an Application for extended leave - travel form at least 1 week prior to departure.
Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and, therefore, contribute to your child's total absences for the year.
Students will also be required to complete an additional form to accompany the application. To complete this form, they will need to speak to each of their teachers to determine what work or assessments they will miss while they are away and organise extensions. This form must accompany the Application for extended leave - travel form when submitting it to our school office.
Please return the 2 completed forms to the school office, along with relevant travel documentation such as an e-ticket or itinerary, and they will be passed on to our Principal.
3. What if my child needs to leave school early?
If your child needs to leave school early for any reason, we ask that parents/carers write us a short handwritten note stating your child's name, the leaving time, a reason why they are leaving and who will be picking them up. Your child will present your note to their Deputy Principal before 9 am and a Leave Slip will be generated.
Then, at the approved pick-up time, your child can leave their classroom and meet you at the car!
Please note: Students can only leave school with a parent/carer or a person who is listed as an Emergency Contact on their enrolment form.
