Reading Girls' School newsletter - 26 january 2024

Principal's message:

We had one of our most successful Personal Development sessions on Thursday for Year 8s. As always, we bring in visitors to discuss with them matters that impact their own personal development or issues they need to consider, further reinforcing the themes students learn through the PSHE curriculum.

Cisco, a locally based global technology company, ran workshops where students were arranged into teams and explored the theoretical elements of computer systems and networks and debated the value of smart schools. With Rabble Theatre, students explored themes of home, safety and identity. The day also included sessions based on the dangers of drugs and alcohol delivered by our visitors from Brighter Futures for Children and the Community Alcohol Partnership officer. Students also received advice about careers and decision making in the lead up to selecting their GCSE options. It is fabulous to have the support of such great organisations and presenters.

We also have an exciting opportunity for students and parents to attend. The Abbey School have invited our students and parents to register for their ARCH Entrepreneurship Event. If you are interested in taking your child to this event please follow this link to sign up. The event will explore the qualities of an entrepreneurial mindset and the skills needed to unlock business innovation.

The evening will include a talk from Sir John Madejski OBE DL DLitt. Sir John was the founder of Auto Trader and developed it into a national brand. He is a well known local figure, best known for building the Madejski Stadium and presiding over Reading Football Club as owner and Chairman for twenty six years, steering RFC to the Premier League on two occasions. I strongly recommend that students sign up to the event.

I wish you all a restful weekend.

Marika Farrugia, Principal

Within Academic Mentoring time over the next 8 weeks, we will be exploring the RGS Pledge scheme. There are 8 Pledges which students are encouraged to achieve over their time at Reading Girls’ School.

Each of the Pledges focus upon the benefits of being involved in enrichment and extra-curricular activities and the personal qualities and skills they develop. These will enable students to achieve more within their time at school and set them up for their future possible careers. The importance of Personal Development and continued learning outside of the classroom is a notion echoed by leaders within careers and further education educators.

To help students understand the importance of enrichment activities Miss Shephard met with four guests for short interviews. Within the interviews the guest speakers outlined their roles, their experiences of enrichment activities and the skills they learnt. Also, their experiences within recruiting university students and for the workplace and what qualities they look for. The interviews were as follows:

• Saru – a current Year 11 who is predicted top grades at GCSE and hoping to study medicine at university.

• Tamzin – a previous student at Reading Girls’ school who is now at Oxford University.

• Faiza – a marketing manager within a sales company in Reading. Faiza trained for her job through an apprenticeship and now recruits as part of her role.

• Dr Jack – a practicing Doctor from Reading who also interviews students for Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Please discuss your child's current involvement in enrichment activities, both inside and outside of school and what they are doing at "marketing" themselves to stand out from the crowd for their futures.

Please follow the links to the Pledge booklet and the school’s latest extra-curricular timetable.

Strawberry DNA

The University of Reading visited two of the year 8 STEM classes this week to consider DNA. Students practiced their lab techniques by extracting the genetic material of strawberries and watching the DNA strands appear. They saw how each step facilitates the exposure of DNA and learnt how such methods and knowledge are used by scientists today in everything from medicine to crime solving. All the year 8s will be having these workshops in their STEM lessons.

Our preferred method of communication is via Edulink, please use this link to login.
