Salton Sea Postcard

The goal for this project was to create a postcard for a location. For my location I chose the Salton Sea, an interesting lake in California with some very striking imagery associated with it. We chose images and placed them inside the letters of our location, then adjusting the coloring of the photos to better flow. I learned a lot about the basic mechanics of Photoshop while working on this project and while it’s not overwhelmingly interesting, I like the way the colors turned out. I hope seeing the postcard makes the viewer curious.

Metal Babel

The goal for this project was to create an image using collage that communicates a theme. I wanted to create a tower of scrap metal inspired by the tower of Babel. We used parts of various photographs, blending them together and adjusting colors to create an original piece. I have mixed feelings about this piece; on one hand, I feel the way I tried to blend the environment and the tower with each other and themselves appears sloppy and strange–on the other hand, I almost like the effect that creates and its almost organic “melt-y” appearance. I hope this piece says something about the hubris of man, or something like that.

House of Holding

The goal for this project was to create a poster for a non-existent movie. I decided to do a poster for what I imagine is a mostly atmospheric indie horror film. We used a color selection process in Photoshop to create a “screen-printing” like effect. I was never quite satisfied with the fonts I chose besides the one for the ‘house’ portion of the title, but I do like the color palette and think the piece at least turned out interesting. I hope the piece conveys the eerie childhood feeling of being up a little too late when the house is a little too quiet.

The Iron King Book Cover

The goal for this project was to make a book cover for a book we have read in the past. I chose The Iron King by Julie Kagawa, a young adult fantasy novel I read in Middle School which features a lot of imagery involving metal versus nature. We created our covers to appear as though they were created using a specific type of cut media, which for me was watercolor paper. While the project was somewhat tedious, I was surprised by how well the textures and drop shadows pulled the piece together and ultimately I like how it turned out. I want the cover to communicate some of the fantastical themes of the book to the audience when they see it.
