KIRKPATRICK FANFARE (1999)

ANDREW BOYSEN JR. (B. 1968)

Kirkpatrick Fanfare was commissioned by Central Missouri State University for the dedication of the James C. Kirkpatrick Library in March 1999. This work has a definite Irish flavor, including a strain of Danny Boy. The "fanfare" features driving rhythms and exciting brass figures, making this dramatic work sure to please both performers and audiences alike.

STREET TANGO (2017)

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992)

ARR. ROBERT LONGFIELD (b. 1947)

Rachel Breaux, conductor

Astor Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player, and arranger. His work brought a whole new wave of tango, and it revolutionized the genre so much that it branched off and got a new name, nuevo tango.

PAINTING OF SHAKERS

TIGHT SQUEEZE (2013)

ALEX SHAPIRO | B. 1962

COMPOSER ALEX SHAPIRO

Conducted by Julianna Pinero

ALEX SHAPIRO writes acoustic and electroacoustic music for a variety of instrumentations. A special detail about her works is that some include backing tracks to her music, adding a unique element to her sound that is not found in many other places. This also brings some challenges during performance, requiring the conductor to have a click track and the ensemble to be perfectly in time. TIGHT SQUEEZE is one of her electroacoustic works for full Wind Band and electronics. She describes it best on her website.

TIGHT SQUEEZE might best be described by the following suggestion: imagine Arnold Schoenberg, Henry Mancini, and Charlie Parker walking into a techno rave club in Havana. And, staying for at least three minutes...

FOLK DANCES (1942/1979)

FOLK DANCES was written with a light-hearted style and represents the "joy and exuberance" of the Russian people. This one-movement piece is actually the third movement of a bigger work named Dance of Youth, of My Beloved Country Op. 63. That piece was arranged for Russian bands in 1970, and edited for American bands nine years later by H. Robert Reynolds.

IRISH TUNE FROM COUNTY DERRY (1918)

Percy Grainger (1882-1961)

PERCY GRAINGER CONDUCTING

PERCY GRAINGER needs no introduction. He continues to be one of the biggest staples in the wind band world, having dozens of pieces recognizable by anyone in the band world. He was an Austrailian-born composer, pianist, and the "champion of the saxophone and the concert band". (Souce)

Grainger's Irish Tune from County Derry has stood the test of time for a number of reasons: colorful sonorities, straightforward accessibility, and a memorable climax. It is also a versatile piece, playable by both younger band and mature players, symphonic bands and wind ensembles. Irish Tune could balance a heavier work on the concert program, or it could be a thoughtful closing piece just before intermission. The broad appeal of this piece will undoubtedly assure its position atop the wind band repertoire for years to come.

SERENADE (1961)

VINCENT PERICHETTI (1915-1987)

SERENADE No. 11 (out of 15 total that he wrote for various instrumentations) is a five movement piece intended to paint a picture. Program notes state that Persichetti's "... was a major composer with a national reputation who chose to write for the band without apology for the medium. He did not write down to the band, he did not write ‘educational music,’ and he did not write formula pieces. He wrote music for ‘a wonderful combination of wind instruments.’”
