Principal's Message
What a wonderful week it was at Mullumbimby High School last week. Our students and staff continue to demonstrate the very best of who we are as a community, and it is great to be able to share some of the highlights.
Cross Country Carnival
Last week's Cross Country Carnival at Brunswick Heads was a highlight of the term. Despite a challenging week of rain, the weather cooperated beautifully on the day, and students had a wonderful time — whether they were chasing personal bests or simply enjoying a walk through the natural surrounds. A special congratulations to Lily-Rose Newell, who crossed the line first in just over 19 minutes — an outstanding effort! Thank you to all our staff who made the event such a success and to our families who supported on the day. Congratulations to Kurrajong who were the overall points winners on the day.
Billie McKenzie — NSW State CHS Swimming Championships
We are thrilled to celebrate Billie McKenzie's recent performance at the NSW State CHS Swimming Championships. Billie competed with distinction in the 50m breaststroke, 40m freestyle, and 100m freestyle in a highly competitive multi-class field. We are enormously proud not only of her results, but of the way she conducted herself throughout the event — she was described by officials as friendly, mature, and an absolute pleasure to work with. Billie is a wonderful representative of our school and community.
Getting to Know Our Year 7 Students
On Friday of week 2, staff undertook Starting Strong Interviews with all Year 7 students. These conversations gave us valuable insight into each student's strengths, learning needs, and goals. It was a joy to hear their voices — from wanting to win an athletics event, to simply asking for more books in the library. This information is helping our teachers know and support each student as an individual, and I encourage families to continue those conversations at home too. Students have their feedback sheets with them. We will be following up with students that were away on the day.
Parent Teacher Evening
Thursday 7 May is our Parent Teacher evening, and we warmly invite all families to attend. These evenings are one of the most important opportunities we have to connect with you, share how your child is going, and work together to support their growth. Our teachers are well prepared and looking forward to the conversations. If you haven't already booked a time, please do so through the link provided on a separate email.
Year 6–7 Transition Afternoon Wednesday 6 May
On Wednesday, we are also welcoming our future Year 7 students again this Wednesday afternoon as part of our Year 6–7 Transition Program. We look forward to giving them a warm introduction to life at Mullumbimby High.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
If you have ever wondered where our core values of respect, responsibility and learning come from, it is from the Positive Behaviour for Learning program. This year a staff team are revitalising PBL to better support our students and to maintain our high expectations of all. Each week, we will have a focus on a different behaviour. Last week, we saw the positive outcome of these reminders though the excellent behaviour of students at our ANZAC assembly. The Week 3 focus is on being on time to class. “In class, on time, ready to learn.” As always, thank you for your ongoing partnership. It means everything to our students to know they are seen, known, and valued — by their teachers here at school and that what they do here at school is valued by you at home. Have a wonderful Week 3. Ms Bree Harvey-Bice, Principal
Some changes in Sports News
The school will host Monaro High School on Thursday 28 May for an afternoon of interschool sport. Students will have the opportunity to compete in Futsal, Rugby League, Basketball and Netball. Please note that the school Athletics Carnival, originally scheduled for Friday 29 May, has been rescheduled to Wednesday 3 June to accommodate this event.
Reminder of school procedures: Leaving Early, Arriving Late or Messages
GOING AWAY 5 DAYS OR MORE? A reminder to our school community that the NSW DET requires that parents arrange holiday DURING school vacations. If your family holiday is during school time, you will need to inform the School Principal in advance and submit a permission to leave from school. An application for leave should be provided at least two weeks prior to departure. Ask our office for an “Application for Leave” BEFORE the holiday. ABSENT, LATE OR EARLY? If your child is not at school, let us know they are safe. We will let you know they are not at school with an SMS message if we have not heard from you. COMING IN LATE? School starts every day at 8:50am for all students. If students arrive after that time and miss CARE (roll call), please let the school know why they are late or provide them with a note. Students need to sign in at Student Services Office as soon as they arrive on the premises. LEAVING EARLY? Only legitimate one-off appointments will be approved by the principal. A note or a phone call should be made to Student Services before 9:30am and a leave pass will be processed. MESSAGES TO STUDENTS? Please call before 2pm. Only URGENT messages will be passed on during class time. We ask that all arrangements regarding after school activities be discussed with your student BEFORE school to avoid stress and distraction.
Attendance Matters
Coming to school regularly makes a big difference - it helps you keep up with your learning, stay connected, and give yourself the best chance to succeed. We're excited to announce that this year, we're recognising students who show a strong commitment to being at school. At the end of each term, all students with 95% attendance or higher will go into the draw to win a $500 gift voucher. Two vouchers will be awarded every term so there's plenty of chances to win. Vouchers can be used at a range of stores, including JB Hi-Fi, Foot Locker, City Beach, EB Games and plenty of other leading retailers. So come to school each day, stay consistent, and you could be in the draw to win $500!

Join the NSW Dolphin Census! Help fill vital knowledge gaps and improve our understanding of dolphins in New South Wales. On Saturday 30 May 2026, we’re inviting coastal communities right along the NSW coast to take part in the first NSW Dolphin Census — a statewide citizen science event to help map where dolphins are found across our coastline, bays and estuaries. Dolphins are deeply valued along our coast, yet we still know surprisingly little about many populations. By taking part, you’ll help create a valuable statewide snapshot of dolphin presence and distribution, contributing to real research and long-term conservation. How to Get Involved Getting involved is simple:
- Register online at https://www.dolphinresearchaustralia.org/dolphin-census/new-south-wales/
- Complete a short training session (approx. 2 hours)
- Head to your chosen location on 30 May and observe dolphins
You can take part from a beach, headland, harbour, bay or river estuary — for as little as 15 minutes or the whole day. Training Options Available To ensure everyone can participate safely and confidently, we’re offering a range of training options throughout May: Face-to-Face Workshops Hastings Point, NSW -15th May Lennox Head, NSW - 23rd May Online Training Live online webinar - 27th May Self-paced eLearning course You can choose the option that best suits your schedule when you register. Why It Matters Across large stretches of the NSW coast, there are still major gaps in knowledge about dolphin distribution, habitat use and population status. By bringing together citizen scientists across the state, we can help fill these gaps and build the knowledge needed to better protect dolphins and their habitats into the future. Be Part of It Whether you’re a regular ocean user or simply love spending time by the coast, this is your opportunity to contribute to meaningful marine science. Register now: https://www.dolphinresearchaustralia.org/dolphin-census/new-south-wales/ Together, we can build the knowledge needed to better protect dolphins along the NSW coast. This project is delivered in partnership with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and supported by the NSW Marine Estate Management Strategy.
The NSW Dolphin Census is part of our East Coast Dolphin Watch Citizen Science Program.
