Ms. Hosford
Ms Hosford is currently a substitute teacher and this is her first year teaching at BB&N middle school. Her first reaction to the middle school was very different than she thought. She was expecting a bigger campus and for the middle school to be about the same as her old school.
Her perspective on kids in general has not changes and her opinion on kids has stayed mostly the same. If she could tell her past self one things before starting working at BB&N it would be to "have a lot of patience for growing different relationships among staff and students." She would have told herself to be open to new relationships and be patient when it comes to students.
Her favorite part of teaching is understanding lessons as a substitute. She feels that she can teach students to her greatest potential when she understands what she is teaching herself. However, if she could change one thing about the middle school it would be the building and the over all environment. "We need a bigger building, we need a better building and you guys need to have lockers." Many thanks to Ms Hosford for letting us interview her!
Ms. Allen
Ms. Allen is currently a 7th grade music teacher. It is her first year a BB&N and her overall, and so far it has been really fun! She really enjoys being able to start a music club and thinks that it is fun for people to have a good time playing/learning music before eighth grade. She also greatly enjoyed coaching rock climbing in the winter and now softball in the spring and she thinks that coaching sports is a great way to meet 6th graders who will come here next year.
Ms. Allen is very excited to start teaching an eighth grade elective next year and thinks that this year is a great year that keeps getting better and better! Ms. Allen feels that middle school is a lot better than expected in many ways. A lot of that is because of Ms.Crewdson, Ms. Geller, Ms. Moon and Ms. Bergmann are very kind and the arts program is very strong. She enjoys teaching students and thinks that the art department is very collaborative and that she has found a great group of faculty friends.
Ms. Allen was pleasantly surprised by the MS! When Ms. Allen has extra time, she enjoys axe throwing. She competed at an international axe throwing competition international tournament in Georgia and tied for second place. Outside of school, Ms. Allen’s musical career has mellowed down because she has been busy with teaching. The last thing she did was being in a jazz band and when it ended, she subbed for people in small bands who couldn’t make it to the concert to perform. If Ms. Allen could tell her past self anything before she started at BB&N, she would tell herself that her ideas, and working to bring opportunities to students, is more effective than she realized, and she should persist anyway because it has a positive effect. Her favorite part of teaching is when kids get to move past the curriculum, and when kids get better in playing a new instrument or learning a rhythm. She loves when her students greatly enjoy the final result of the performance and feel proud of themselves.
Ms. Lo
Ms. Lo (she/they) is the health teacher at the MS and US. Even though she didn’t study health (she studied environmental and urban studies), she felt like this was her dream job, and was excited to work here. They were very surprised that everyone had so much energy, especially in the morning. Before, they worked at a public school, and taught a lot more classes, so she thought that this middle school was a lot calmer, and more contained.
Occasionally in her free time, Ms. Lo coaches some diving students, and since she used to be a diver herself, she thinks that it is a fun opportunity. In their classes, they think that the best part is when the anonymous questions are asked, thinking it is a good way to ask questions without any judgement. If Ms. Lo could tell herself one thing before starting to work at BB&N, she would say to figure out how to manage her time better. While they worked at a public school, they were a lot busier, so now, they have more time to spend thinking about the curriculum. Overall, Ms. Lo loves working at BB&N, feeling like it has a manageable workload.
