Women's Ice Hockey Wins Castleton Invitational, Improves to 6-1-0

After a split last weekend with Bowdoin in their first NESCAC matches of the season, the Mules went out of conference and on the road to string together a trio of victories.

Anna Staton

Colby allowed only a single goal in each of the games this week, topping UNE 3-1, SUNY Postsdam 4-1, and Castleton 6-1. Paige Bolyard got the start in net in each, collecting 40 saves (0.930 save percentage).

Meg Rittenhouse tallied three goals in the tournament in Rutland (Potsdam and Castleton) and four goals in the span of five days. She currently leads all NESCAC scorers with 1.0 goals/game and 1.43 points/game. Anna Staton was named tournament MVP collecting three assists against SUNY Potsdam and one more in the final against Castleton.

Colby makes it three years in a row bringing home the championship trophy from the Castleton Invitational, outscoring their opponents by a collective score of 29-3 (six games total dating back to the 2021-22 season).

The Mules end the first semester with a record of 6-1-0.

Men’s Basketball Collects Two Wins in a Busy Week of Action

The Mules took down the University of Maine, Farmington 98-76 Tuesday and then Bowdoin College 72-62 on Thursday. Looking to make it three in a row Saturday at Bates, Colby came up short in overtime 99-92.

Marcos Montiel

On the road against UMF, the two teams stayed even until a 12-2 Colby run gave the Mules a seven point cushion right before halftime. Colby came out of the locker room strong, extending their lead to 16 only five minutes into the half, cruising to their second largest margin of victory of the season. Jack Lawson (headline photo) dominated, netting 27 points for a new career high on top of 10 rebounds (five offensive) as well as four assists. Other double digit scorers include Max Poulton (19), Liam O’Connell (13), Lucas Green (12) and Marcos Montiel coming off the bench with 14 points.

Two days later on Mayflower Hill, the Mules and Polar Bears traded blows the entire way with 19 lead changes. With just under four minutes to go in the game, Colby was able to separate themselves from the Polar Bears after three pointers by Marcos Montiel and Ben Kaczmarek. Poulton led the Mules in scoring with 19 points followed by Montiel with 17 and Lawson with 15.

In Saturday's setback against Bates, Poulton scored another 21 points and had a remarkable performance from the free throw line, sinking 12 of 13 attempts.

With the end of the first semester, Poulton currently ranks 1st in the NESCAC in total points with 187 with Lawson close behind in 4th with 175 points. Lawson also ranks 4th in rebounds (100) and 8th in assists (31).

Henry Westrich, Lucas Green

Colby will now head into the winter break with a 6-5 record and plenty of time to prepare for their next matchup on January 2nd versus Maine Maritime Academy.

Women’s Basketball Excels Against Stevens

After coming up just short to Bates at home Wednesday night when a last second shot rolled off the rim at the buzzer (55-54), the Mules traveled to the Garden State Saturday in a matchup against Stevens.

Kate Olenik

Despite trailing to the Ducks after the first quarter, a 25-point outburst in the second put the Mules ahead heading into the break. Colby maintained their offensive pressure, cruising to a 23-point margin of victory 74-51.

First-year Kate Olenik continues to put up big numbers on the season as she totaled 24 points for a new career high to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Both Lydia Mordarski (nine points, nine rebounds) and Amelia Hanscom (eight points, 10 rebounds) narrowly missed the double-double mark.

Olenik currently sits 3rd in scoring in the NESCAC with 171 points and leads the conference with 28 steals.

Adaobi Nebuwa

Colby, with a 7-3 record, will have plenty of time to rest during the winter break before heading to Babson's Judy Pearson '84 Memorial Tournament taking place December 29th-30th.

Mules Tested in First Conference Road Trip

After starting the season with five games in and around Waterville (four of the first five games were at home with the lone away match coming 50 miles away in Brunswick), the Men's Ice Hockey team embarked on their first road trip of the season.

Javi Ubarri

In Friday night's matchup with Conn. College, the Camels jumped in front early for a 2-0 lead. Javi Ubarri brought the Mules to within one, but the hosts pushed one more across to secure the 3-1 victory. The two squads combined for nine penalties (six in the second period alone).

Facing the Jumbos of Tufts University Saturday afternoon in Malden, Colby again fell behind 2-0 early. Bobby Landry (headline photo) connected for his first of the season to make the score 2-1 but the Jumbos added a third goal late for the 3-1 victory. Colby out-shot Tufts 34-23 in the match.

With 28 saves against Conn. and another 20 against Tufts, goaltender Andy Beran now has 1500 saves in his career with a 0.933 save percentage and 1.83 goals against average.
