Lest We Forget.

ANZAC DAY - DAWN SERVICE MAROUBRA 2025

Lest we forget.

ANZAC COMMUNITY MARCH

On April 13th, students from SSHS joined with the Maroubra community to participate in the ANZAC Community March.

JEWISH ANZAC DAY MEMORIAL

Debs represented South Sydney High School and had the honour of speaking at the Jewish Anzac Day Memorial Service, attended by over 200 people, including representatives from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The service brought together people of many faiths and backgrounds in a moving tribute to those who served.

Debs shared the powerful story of her great uncle, who was just 16 years old when he lost his life in World War II — a poignant reminder of the young lives sacrificed for our freedom.

Lest we forget.

SCHOOL ANZAC DAY SERVICE

During the last week of Term 1, our school community came together to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of our ANZACs.

Through a respectful and moving ceremony, our students and staff paid tribute to those who have served — and continue to serve our country.

Autism Acceptance Month

By: Annabelle Kariappa

April was Autism Awareness month. I push back on this name because it feels like most people are aware of autism’s existence, but fail to accept us as worthwhile members of society. So I intend to run with Autism Acceptance month as a better goal.

Just in case you aren’t aware, autism is a neurodevelopmental condition which means autistic people experience the world differently to most. We sense, experience, interpret, learn and understand things in different ways, but as the saying goes, ‘If you’ve met one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person’. Just as with any person, we are unique individuals with all our complicated and messy humanness.

For Autism Acceptance month at SSHS, we are wanting to highlight the absolute right of autistic people to take up space, to see ourselves represented in the books we read, the stories we hear, the shows we watch. We are the protagonists in our own lives, not objects of pity or embarrassment and it’s important to see that representation in all facets of our lives. There are displays in the library featuring books centred around neurodivergent and autistic characters written by autistic or neurodivergent authors, we have posters around the school highlighting key messages of ‘different not less’, ‘autistic pride’, ‘language matters’.

As a student, I have heard a lot of jokes around autism and it’s not funny. It doesn’t make sense either. Telling someone ‘you’re so autistic’ is akin to thinking you are insulting someone by telling them ‘you have such brown hair’. Being autistic is not bad, it’s not taboo, and using our identity and culture (or any identity or culture) as an insult is harmful and offensive when we’re already so marginalised and misunderstood. No one should have something they love about themselves weaponised.

Climbing off my soapbox, I have thought about ways people can be good allies to autistic and other neurodivergent people. This isn’t exhaustive, and it’s best to always ask someone how they best like to be supported, but here’s my thoughts!

1. Accept and understand that difference is a necessary, needed and natural part of everyday life.

2. Don't comment on people’s accommodations. If someone is wearing headphones, fidgeting in class or doing something you may view as ‘weird’, there’s no need to comment - just let people get on with their day.

3. Don’t assume you know what someone might need or want- get (kindly) curious- ask how you can help.

4. Respect all forms of communication, if someone uses a device to speak, signs with their hands or doesn't speak with their mouth, that's ok! Everyone communicates differently and every form of communication is valid.

5. At the end of the day, be a good human. It shouldn’t be that hard.

From the Library

Neuroaffirming Resources

Neuroaffirming refers to an approach that embraces and celebrates neurodiversity, recognizing that all individuals, including those who are neurodivergent, have unique strengths and ways of thinking. It's about valuing differences and creating inclusive environments where everyone feels supported and understood. Neuroaffirming helps individuals develop a positive sense of self by reframing differences and recognizing and valuing their unique qualities.

The students have received their engraved medals, and the crest has been updated. Sign up for term two’s competition from week 3. The competition will start in week 5.

U15 NFL Flag NSW South State Championships

Exciting News: Our School's First State NFL Flag Tournament!

We are thrilled to share an amazing achievement from our students who recently participated in our school's inaugural state NFL Flag tournament! Competing against numerous teams from various schools, our talented athletes showcased their exceptional skills and teamwork, ultimately finishing in an impressive 5th place.

A Journey of Dedication and Teamwork

The journey to the tournament was filled with hard work and dedication. Our students practiced diligently, honing their skills in passing, catching, and strategic play. Under the guidance of our dedicated coaches, they not only learned the fundamentals of flag football but also the importance of sportsmanship and collaboration. This experience has fostered a strong sense of camaraderie among the players, contributing to their success on and off the field.

Tournament Highlights

The tournament was an exciting day filled with thrilling plays and unforgettable moments. Our team demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, overcoming challenges and celebrating victories. Highlights included:

  • Outstanding Plays: Several players made impressive catches and executed strategic plays that kept the crowd on their feet.
  • Team Spirit: The support from fellow students, parents, and teachers was phenomenal, creating an electric atmosphere that encouraged our athletes to give their best.
  • Learning and Growth: Each game provided invaluable experience, and the players learned lessons that extend beyond the field.

Looking Ahead

Finishing 5th in our first state tournament is a remarkable achievement, and we couldn’t be prouder of our athletes. This experience marks the beginning of a promising tradition at our school, and we are eager to build on this success in the future. Plans are already underway for next year’s tournament,

Year 8 Girls Volleyball Match Report

As my team and I were making our way to Sydney Olympic Park, I could tell everyone was nervous yet very excited. When we walked into the indoor area and set our stuff down, everyone became a little more nervous, but we stayed confident and didn’t let it stop us from doing our best.

Our first two matches went amazingly well, versing St Scholastica and Chatswood High. We won both of these matches and almost all the sets. Everyone was a bit uneasy, but after the first set (and winning it), we all became much more confident in what we were doing.

Our next game was against Sydney Girls, which wasn’t as easy as the other two. We were slightly intimidated since their skill level was much higher than ours, but we didn’t let that stop us from doing what we could. We lost points due to our lack of serve receiving, but we still did our best and earned quite a few points. We ended up losing, but we gave the match our all!

Our final game was against Tempe, this one decided whether or not we would make it into the finals. Everyone was a bit jittery, but some of us were also a little excited. It was probably the most intense match of the day, and everyone gave it their all. We had amazing serves throughout each set from Kassidy, and really good sets from Emilia and Luna. There were also awesome spikes from Summer and Lily, and great passes from Mia, Alissa and Diamond. We did our best during this match, both us and Tempe made a few mistakes, but we also earned lots of points. Though it was a close game, we unfortunately lost and didn’t make it to the finals, finishing in third place.

My team and I are so thankful we got to go and have such a fun and exciting experience. I’m really proud that we placed third, especially since it was our first competition together. Taking a set from every team is quite an achievement! We all did our best and gave it everything we had, and I’m super glad we got to attend the comp!

Lily, Year 8 student

Opens Netball knockout

The South Sydney High School Girls Open Netball team displayed grit and determination in their third-round game against Port Hacking High School, despite tough circumstances.

Although they did not come away with the win, the girls should be proud of their sportsmanship and the effort they put into the knockout competition.

Maths update

The 2025 Pi Day theme was Mathematics, Art, and Creativity. While Mathematics and Art may seem like very separate fields, there is much harmony between them.

At SSHS, some of our Mathematics classes have recently used their mathematical understandings to inspire creative pursuits. Our Year 12 Numeracy class has spent weeks exploring scale and dimension, applying these concepts practically by designing and constructing models of community libraries. Our Year 9 Yellow and Violet classes have been extending their work on Pythagoras’ Theorem and surds to first construct a Pythagorean spiral and then use this as the basis for creative designs.

Take a look at some of our work!

P&C News

Last Saturday, our P&C held a fundraiser BBQ at South Sydney High School's federal election polling booth.

Not knowing how many people were going to show due to pre-polling and the inclement weather, we played it "safe" and purchased as much food & drinks as we sold at last year's council elections. Boy did that decision come back to bite us!

By 11am, we had sold out of food, causing me to run to Pacific Square to find more sausages & rolls while hungry voters queued anxiously. At 2pm, the same thing happened, with my wife running to Eastgardens to save the day!!

After an exhausting 12 hour shift, I reconciled our takings and realised it had most definitely been worth all the pain. We had made a net profit of just under $3,000, nearly $800 more than we had ever done before!!!

This amazing achievement would not have been possible without the help of parents Jo, Vicky, Jackie, Doreen, Michelle, Daichi, Jen, Mary, Wery, Sam, Clara & Alex, Tania, Julie, Amanda, Harry & Corlia, Lisa, Jo, John, Jason, Mary, Chris, Cristiane and the incredible families who baked & donated beautiful goodies to sell at our stall. A special mention must be made of students Judah and Jonathan who, together with P&C members Justine, Vanessa and myself, stayed for much of the day to contribute to our success. Thankyou also to Mr Patmore and Rick for organising eskies and barbecues, Ms Neilsen for finding our gas (from the airport) and to our awesome office staff for preparing signage & promoting the event.

I wish everyone a wonderful weekend and Happy Mother's Day to our great Mums🤗

Warm regards,

Anthony Fajwul, 2025 SSHS P&C President
