Canbury School Newsletter

26th JUNE 2026. ISSUE 406

Head's Welcome

Dear Families,

What a remarkably busy and incredibly hot week it has been! True to our wonderful Canbury style, our entire community has persevered, adapted, and shone through it all. I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to our incredible staff and students. Everyone absolutely battled through the heatwave while simultaneously going through our two-day ISI inspection. I could not be prouder of how our school shone. As soon as we are officially able to share the final report and news with you, we will do so. Thank you as well to all the families who reached out to wish us luck before the inspectors arrived and offered to share lovely words of praise about our school with the inspection team. We are due for our standard inspection next academic year. This will provide an opportunity for both you and your children to share your feedback and experiences with the inspectors. After such an intense few days, I think we are all very ready for next week's fantastic lineup of activities and fun! It is going to be a wonderful reward for everyone's hard work. Behind the scenes, myself and the Senior Leadership Team are now turning our attention to Canbury's long-term strategic goals for the next academic year and beyond. I am very excited about where we are heading and hope to share an overview of this vision with you all at the start of the autumn term. Wishing you all a restful, slightly cooler weekend! Mrs Rich Head

What we've been up to

Garden Party

Thank you to everyone who attended our fabulous garden party last night. It really is a highlight of the school year and once again, we had a joyful evening of games, food, laughter and entertainment. Well done to everyone involved including Sam, his sister, Lexi, Daisy A, Oliver Y9, Elizabeth and Ben Y7 for their performances. Thank you then to all of the staff and also Reenie, for her excellent organisational skills and non-stop enthusiasm!

KS3 Games

KS3 had a brilliant time playing softball and rounders last week!

Y9 Saatchi Gallery Trip

On Monday, Year 9 had a brilliant day out at the Saatchi Gallery, where they visited The Sun and The Moon: Art Inspired by the Celestial. The exhibition gave students the chance to explore colourful, thought-provoking artwork inspired by the sun, the moon and our fascination with space. One especially exciting moment was spotting pieces created by one of our students’ fathers, whose fantastic work appeared to reflect the orange and blue colours linked with the Artemis II mission. After enjoying the exhibition, students had lunch together before heading to Venchi for ice cream, where they were able to choose and buy their own treats. The trip was a lovely opportunity for students to show independence, curiosity and confidence outside the classroom, and they represented Canbury beautifully throughout the day.

Mr McGregor finally defeats Year 7!

It only took Mr McGregor a year - but the heat and GCSE geography finally got the better of our Year 7 class :)

Inspectors during a heatwave!

Well done to everyone during the heatwave this week, which also twinned with our inspector visit. The students have dealt extremely well with the hotter rooms in the school, and have been sure to stay hydrated and safe in the share. We'll look forward to some slightly cooler weather, but no rain, for our Thorpe Park/Hogsmill Nature Reserve trips next week!

Student Corner

Marley represents Canbury

Congratulations to Marley who attended the ISA golf tournament to represent Canbury School.   Despite the poor standard of golf course and slight disorganisation of the event, Marley enjoyed himself!   Well done!

Well done to Daisy Y7 for making the Lego in her Garden Party Hamper prize so quickly! We love them :)

SEND in the News

Each week we will be shining a spotlight on a different area of SEND that has featured in the news. This week , The Children’s Commissioner for England has launched The Big Future survey, and she would like to hear the voices of children and young people with SEND. Students, please take a couple of moments to complete this survey. It is your chance to share your unique perspectives, challenges, and brilliant ideas from the SEND community and make sure they are put directly in front of government decision-makers.

Dreamcatcher Film Camp at St Mary's University

A long-established filmmaking programme for young people aged 9–18. We have welcomed students from Canbury in previous years who thoroughly enjoyed the experience and again have an opportunity for students who may be interested ahead of the summer holidays. Now in its 17th year, Dreamcatcher offers young people the opportunity to write, act in, direct, film and edit their own short film over one creative week whilst working alongside industry professionals. It is a fast-paced, hands-on and highly collaborative experience designed to immerse students in the creative process, whether they are complete beginners or already passionate about drama, performance, film and storytelling.  The camps aim to give them a strong idea about the roles within the creative industries, both in front of and behind the camera, as well as the life skills that help young people thrive both in education and beyond.  This summer, we are also including two focused, additional masterclasses at no extra cost:

• Breaking into the Film & Creative Industries • Building Confidence, Presentation, Communication & Collaboration Skills

See the flyer and booking link below for those who may be interested, particularly those with an interest in drama, performance, storytelling and the creative arts.
