Swimming Carnival recap and highlights

Last week, our Swimming Carnival was a fantastic day of energy, enthusiasm and school spirit. It was great to see students getting involved, whether racing for points, cheering on their friends or simply having a go. Records fell like autumn leaves, the boat races took on a life of their own with some very creative techniques, and the belly flop competition proved to be a real crowd favourite once again.

Year 12 helped the students get some revenge on their teachers with their ice bucket fundraiser, (personal note … it was actually very refreshing!), raising money to celebrate their end-of-year Formal was never more fun!   A huge thank you to all our staff, student helpers and supporters who helped make the day such a success.

Our amazing student volunteers

Making a difference in our community

A HUGE thank you to our amazing student volunteers who gave their time and energy to support the Byron Public School Swimming Carnival on Monday 9 February.

By stepping up as volunteers, our students helped the primary school run a smooth, safe and efficient carnival. From assisting with events to supporting younger swimmers and staff, their positive attitude and willingness to help made a real difference on the day.

Opportunities like this not only support our local school communities but also allow our students to demonstrate leadership, responsibility and community spirit.

A big well done and thank you to all students involved — you represented our school proudly!

Year 12 Valentine's Day Fundraiser

Year 12 serenaders

This week, our incredible Year 12 cohort at Byron Bay High School brought colour, laughter and a whole lot of love to the campus with a fantastic Valentine’s Day fundraiser. Yesterday was the main event, with students dressing in themed gear, warming up their vocal cords and roaming the school to deliver surprise serenades. Songs rang out across classrooms and playgrounds as messages were delivered to unsuspecting recipients – prompting reactions that ranged from delight, to shock, to good-natured embarrassment.

Love letters were also signed, sealed and successfully delivered throughout the day.
A big congratulations to Nixon in Year 7, who came closest to guessing the number of lollies in the jar. Enjoy all 178 of them, Nixon!

At break times, students lined up for face painting, a popular bake sale and refreshing snow cones, which were especially appreciated in the heat. Thank you to everyone who supported the fundraiser by purchasing an item or sending a serenade. Every dollar raised will help support the Year 12 student’s Formal later in the year. Year Adviser Mr Humphreys said he was incredibly proud of the initiative and teamwork shown by the cohort, who planned and ran the entire day themselves. Well done, Year 12 – a wonderful effort and a great way to spread some joy across the school. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Head lice

Awareness and prevention

We have had some cases of head lice reported to the school. If your child is complaining of an itchy head, it is worthwhile checking their hair and treating if necessary. To help prevent the spread of head lice, NSW Health suggests the following:

  • Regularly check your child’s hair, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.
  • Tie long hair back to reduce the chance of lice spreading.
  • Avoid sharing hats, brushes, combs, and hair accessories.
  • Encourage children to avoid head-to-head contact during play and other activities.
  • If head lice are found, follow recommended treatment guidelines promptly to stop the spread.

Thank you for your support in keeping our school community healthy.

Introducing new e-bike guidelines

What you need to know about e-bikes at BBHS

In response to dangerous conditions on the roads and lack of secure parking on our school grounds students in Years 7-10 will no longer be allowed to ride their e-bikes to school and park them on school grounds.   Traditional push bikes, with safety helmets, are still an acceptable form of transport to school. Students will need to lock their traditional push bikes in the dedicated bike racks near the basketball courts.

Students are not permitted to chain their e-bikes to any external school or council fencing. If they do so, they run the risk of it being stolen or moved.

There is also no longer a designated bike entry/exit gate in the morning. The gate on Bangalow Road will now be locked in the morning and all students will need to enter and leave via the pedestrian gate on Arakwal Court.

Students in Years 11 and 12 are still permitted to ride e-bikes to school and park them on school grounds (in the designated racks near the basketball courts). Year 11 and 12 students who ride e-bikes to school will need to register them with the front office. Senior students will then get a red tag to attach to their e-bike while they are on school grounds.

ATSI Homework Club

Supporting First Nations student success

Our Homework Club is a fantastic, free opportunity for First Nations students to strengthen their learning, build confidence, and achieve their best. Held in the Library every Monday afternoon from 3:40 to 4:40 pm, the club provides a quiet, supportive space equipped with all the resources you need to succeed.

Students will be supported by a highly skilled Maths tutor, experienced English teachers, and a dedicated HSIE teacher specialising in Years 7–10. With enough notice, we can also arrange specialty tutors to support specific subjects or assignments.

Please note that transport is not provided, and students will need to be picked up after the session or make their own way home.

By taking part, students will be contributing to the important goal of closing the gap in education outcomes — while developing strong study habits, confidence, and pride in their learning journey.
