April is here!!!!
At long last we fully welcome Spring! It is thought that "April" comes from the Latin work aperire, meaning "to open", which is exactly what the plant and flower buds are doing in April!
Nature comes alive, as does our desire to be outside and enjoy the sunshine and awakening colors and beauty. Enjoy the wonders of nature!

Military Hero Banners
Please send in your request form, photo and check for the banner NO LATER THAN APRIL 15TH in order for the banner to be printed and displayed for Memorial Day (or you can submit the form online and pay with a credit card – click on box below, but you will still need to send in the photo.)
New Fairfield is so very proud of all of the men and women who serve or have served in the military. We are currently taking orders for Military Hometown Hero Banners to honor and recognize hometown Veterans and active duty members of the United States Armed Forces. If you are interested in purchasing a Hero Banner to be displayed in the center of Town annually from Memorial Day through Veterans Day, please submit an application before April 15th. After that date, requests will be accepted on a year-round basis and banners will be printed when the required minimum quantity is reached.
Banners will display the official military photo of the service person, as well as their name and branch of the United States Armed Forces. We are asking sponsors to contribute $40 toward the cost of each banner. To qualify for the Military Banner Program, the honoree must be a Veteran or currently serving as an active duty member of the United States Armed Forces, and he or she must currently reside in New Fairfield or have an immediate family member residing in New Fairfield (parent, spouse, sibling, son or daughter).
You can complete the form and pay online for a banner, and then email or send in your picture – you can find the form on www.newfairfield.org, under the Selectmen's Office heading or click below:
You can also print the form or request a form from the Selectman's office and send it in or bring it to Town Hall. Digital photos, if available, provide the highest quality banner. You may email your photo to: jgreen@newfairfieldct.gov. Please bring in your form to Town Hall or mail your completed form and $40 check made payable to "Town of New Fairfield" to: Town of New Fairfield, Selectman's Office, 4 Brush Hill Road, New Fairfield, CT 06812.
**PLEASE NOTE**
As Public Works has been reviewing the banners for the season, they have noted that some of them have become worn from the sun and the weather. After the 2025 season, and after every season thereafter, they will determine which banners should be retired due to excessive wear. It appears that the life of the banner is approximately 4-5 years. The banner placements are rotated so that one banner does not receive the same amount of sun, weather and wind in one location every year.
These banners show the respect of the Town of New Fairfield and its residents for each service member and, as such, when Public Works takes the banners down at the end of each season, beginning in 2025, and notices that a banner has become too worn to be respectfully displayed the following year and should be retired, we will let you know. At that time, you can let us know if you would like to purchase a new banner or if you would like to receive the retired banner or both.

New Fairfield Animal Control
With spring coming, please remember what Animal Control does.
Problems with wildlife such as bears, coyotes, bobcats etc., please call DEEP. (Department of Energy and Environmental Protection).
If a bear is in a densely populated area, contact the DEEP Wildlife Division (860-424-3011, Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM) or DEEP Dispatch (860-424-3333, 24 hours) to report the sighting and obtain advice.
Watch for wildlife crossing roads, they will start getting more active. And remember, baby season will soon be upon us, so you may see raccoons, skunks and foxes more active in the daytime searching for food after spending the nights feeding their babies. Unless they are acting sickly or aggressive, they are just hungry.
