Year 12s fundraiser was a frighteningly fun success!

'Spooky Sweets and Treats'

Last Friday, our new Year 12 students, Class of 2026, kicked off their first fundraising effort in spectacular style with the Halloween-themed 'Spooky Sweets' bake sale and creepy face painting extravaganza.

Led by our epic student leadership team and supported by a crew of Year 12 legends, the school was loaded up with an impressive selection of delicious baked goods that disappeared faster than you could say “trick or treat!”

The face painting station was a crowd favourite, delivering everything from eerie masterpieces to some questionable artistic choices that kept everyone laughing. The spirit across the school was electric, with students enjoying the fun while getting into the Halloween vibe. Most importantly, the event raised valuable funds to go towards the Year 12 Formal next year, proving that when this cohort works together, they’re an unstoppable force. Well done, Year 12! 🎃

HSC Intensive Studio Practice

Eana with one of her life drawings

Over the recent school holidays, from Monday 29 September to Friday 3 October, Year 12 2026 students Marcella A and Eana T took part in Module 2 of the NAS HSC Intensive Studio Practice program, demonstrating exceptional skill and creativity in their chosen disciplines. Eana explored life drawing, while Marcella elevated her painting practice.

The NAS HSC Intensive Studio Practice program is an outstanding opportunity for Year 11 Visual Arts students who are passionate about developing their artistic skills and preparing for the HSC and beyond. Endorsed by the NSW Education Standards Authority, the program has been offered since 2000 to students from both government and non-government schools.

These 2 students were gifted the opportunity to work in professional art studios, refine their technical abilities, and build a strong art portfolio.

The program provides a valuable opportunity for students from across the state to collaborate, exchange ideas, and elevate their artistic practice in preparation for their HSC year.

The NAS HSC Intensive Studio Practice appears on Eana and Marcella’s HSC certificate as a one-unit course. NAS issues each student with a 'Statement of Results' which includes a mark out of 50. Both girls were graded a 44 out of 50, which is outstanding! Congratulations to both Eana and Marcella on their extended dedication and commitment to their visual art practice.

“The HSC Intensive was a really amazing experience where I could learn important new skills and be mentored by amazing artists who helped me throughout the course. The art school was a very encouraging environment and I met lots of lovely people, so I'm very grateful to have had this opportunity.”

Barber Shop Program at the Byron Youth Service

Some of our young barbers in action

This Semester, students from Years 9 and 10 have taken part in the Barber Shop Program - an outstanding success that has given them the opportunity to be mentored in the trade skills of barbering while learning to cut the hair of respected community role models.

Through this hands-on experience, our young barbers are not only mastering the fundamentals of the trade, but also developing vital life skills in communication, self-care, and respect - with a strong focus on the positive aspects of masculinity.

Communities are powerful teachers. Learning doesn’t stop at the school fence - it continues through the people and places around us.

We’ve seen tremendous commitment and pride from the students involved. Having their own shop to manage and take responsibility for has clearly made a real difference in their confidence, teamwork, and sense of purpose.

A big thank you to our young barbers for my haircut. There wasn’t much to trim, but it was certainly the best haircut I’ve had in a long time! It was just in time for the Year 12 Formal next week as well.

And a huge thank you to all staff and mentors involved - this initiative is truly shaping futures

Mr Murray Cronin - Deputy Principal (Years 8, 10 and 12)

Six fake names, one predator, and the digital silence that let him in

by Kirra Pendergast, Under The Skin of the Systems

We are sharing an important story written by Kirra Pendergast - a specialist in online safety, human digital risk intelligence, and governance, and Byron Bay local.

This post discusses real cases & failures in digital child‑protection systems.

A 14-year-old girl from Greater Manchester was groomed online by a predator using multiple fake profiles across Discord and Snapchat. The terrifying reality? None of the platforms flagged his behaviour. It was only when she boarded a stranger’s car that her school raised the alarm, leading to his arrest and a landmark 20-year sentence under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This case exposes the hidden dangers behind seemingly “safe” online spaces and the limits of current social media protections. Parents, we encourage you to read this – to understand the risks your child faces and how online grooming can slip through the cracks.
