"Up Up and Away" by Jour'Nee Towsend-Alexis, Grade 1, Chase Elementary School
We learned all about how hot air ballons work. You have to open a flap to make them come down. We used crayon and watercolor to make our backgrounds (crayon resist). We learned how to weave to make our basket. Our balloon has patterns.
"Digital Portrait" by Zion McConneaughey, Grade 8, Perry Hall Middle School
In the portrait I used my own photos and photo shopped them in the background. I used a lot of colors to express my mood in the picture, by putting the opposite color to bring out the picture. I put shapes and patterns in the different parts of the background and foreground so that it can separate parts of the picture. I made the background a place I would like to go to, so it can show how I like to explore places. The bright color shows how I like to express myself, it also makes the mood happy and exciting.
"Piercing Glow" by Amadou Diallo, Grade 11, Kenwood High School
One night I went outside and saw that it was very foggy, so I looked around to see what I could take a picture of and if there were any nice light sources, and I found this bush. Using a low vantage point, I kneeled down at this bush in the front of my house, and I angled the camera so that I could just see the orange-ish light from the lamppost peeking through. Most of the picture is taken up by the bush, but behind the bush you can see the fog from that night. The focal point would be the lamp light. Something I liked is that you can see the light bouncing off the leaves of the bush. I considered the light source, focal point, point of view, background, and composition when taking this photo and that helped my process.
"Peace Candle" by Chase Medley-Williams, Grade 3, Maiden Choice School
"Self-Portrait" by Kachina Lai, Grade 8, Perry Hall Middle School
When I was drawing my self-portrait, I wanted to incorporate a subway in China. This depicts the third trip that I've ever gone to China and one of my only memories of China since the last two trips were when I was too young to remember. China is my homeland and I really want to learn more about my own culture.
"Marsha P." by Zariah Smithwick, Grade 11, Kenwood High School
The artwork is based upon a famous black trans activist. She is well known for her strong presence in the early efforts of the gay rights movement in the early 20th century. She is most known for her role in the stonewall riots, where she stood front row and helped liberate queer people from the harsh social norms and rules pushed onto them by an hostile American society. I decided to base this artwork around her, due to my immense amount of respect for her. When I think of feminism I think of her, and other trans women of color who have paved the way for the queer community. This piece is a part of a larger body of art, dedicated to the overlooked minorities in the feminist movement. I wanted to showcase the women who aren’t fought for, the women who were never even considered in the fight of equality for women. I felt that it wouldn’t have been right to make art dedicated to this issue and not include one of the most unprotected and disregarded groups of people, and when I thought of trans women, Johnson was the first person that came to mind.
"Wings of Positivity" by Kenzi Easter, Grade 6, Sparrows Point Middle School
"I Heart Art" by Mia Johns, Kindergarten, Norwood Elementary School
"Whimsical House" by Becca Thompson, Grade 12, Eastern Technical High School
“Whimsical House” is a clay sculpture of two wavy, winding towers, with a bridge connecting them, and people resting around. The contrast in color is a key part of the artwork, as the yellow and brown of the tower contrast with the blue of the people. Texture also features heavily in the piece, as brick texture covers the entire building, both the walls and the roof. The structure was created from slabs, which were rolled, cut out, and assembled into this 3-dimensional form. The work was inspired by David Stabely, whose ceramic houses feature fantastical curves and colors, in addition to the tall towers with windows that I have incorporated into my work. Additionally, I took inspiration from M. C. Escher’s famous drawings of impossible architecture. The way that bridges, ladders, and stairs connect different parts of buildings in these illustrations has been a source of interest for me for many years, and I find that it translates very well to a 3-dimensional structure, even without impossible physics involved. Overall, this piece was made to explore the boundaries of what could be built with slabs, a technique in clay that usually leads to quite static and angular sculptures, and instead create a very fluid and dynamic piece. In addition, the inclusion of the tiny figures across the build help to show the connection between people and the buildings we surround ourselves with. The places that we live determine how we are able to communicate and connect with each other, so this sculpture offers a different idea to the very straight and angular buildings we usually live in. The connection of the towers at the bottom, and the bridge that connects them, would allow for more connection between the people that live there. My “Whimsical House” presents a more ideal version of large buildings, if they were both more visually and socially appealing.
"Magic Tree" by Lily Daniels, Grade 11, Patapsco High School
This painting was created on a plein air painting field trip to Cylburn Arboretum. I chose the area of the landscape to paint because I was drawn to the colors and textures of the tree. The tree framed the space. I was drawn to the lighting in the distance. I used small marks in a swooping movement to create the painting. I was inspired by the impressionist painters in my approach. I pushed the colors to be more vibrant and give the painting a magical feeling.
"Still Life with Bear" by Paisley Mulligan, Grade 5, Chase Elementary School
While making "Still Life with Bear," I made sure to focus on shading. We practiced by drawing the 3D forms first. We learned about creating depth through placement, overlapping, and Shading. I learned to use color pastels to shade. I avoided black using darker colors for shadows. I hope you use this advice for your own still life.
"Patterned Fish" by Amari Howard, Grade 1, Honeygo Elementary School
"Collector's Items" by Angelika Sherpa, Grade 11, Perry Hall High School
The objects I chose in my artwork are a little teddy bear, henna, Khada, Marigold flowers and a Tibetan Buddhist flag. Me, my dad and my mom had just moved to Arizona and my dad found that teddy bear in a Walmart parking lot. I remember that day, it was night and my dad was amazed that he found it and we were all happy. Henna is a part of South Asian culture, it’s worn by women on special occasions such as weddings, birthdays and holidays. It also symbolizes good health and prosperity in marriage. Nepali Khada is a traditional ceremonial scarf that symbolizes purity and luck. Marigold flowers are one of the most well- known flowers in Nepali culture, it has both religious and cultural importance. They symbolize luck, love and enthusiasm which makes it perfect for celebrity reasons. Lastly, the Tibetan Buddhist flag represents components of Earth, blue represents the sky, white represents the air, red symbolizes fire, green represents water and yellow represents Earth. The colors represent balance. I’m satisfied with my artwork, the results turned out better than I expected and I’m glad I kept working on it. My art teacher also urged me to keep going and I’m thankful she did. I liked the theme because it made me feel more connected to myself and my childhood.

My name is Tayona. I love to paint. My favorite color is pink, but I like other colors too. I go to work on some days. I am a good worker at Red Brick Station. I have some paintbrushes of my own. Sometimes I follow my teacher’s directions but I also like to do things my own way. My teacher likes that about me.
"Overgrown" by Diana Roadas- Hernandez, Grade 11, Perry Hall High School
For this artwork, I wanted to do a simple landscape with a small silhouette as the main focus. I also really wanted to make texture be emphasized all around so that my painting seemed more realistic. The main idea this artwork explores is growth, I tried to portray growth through the vines on the tree which is also another main focus. The vines are a bit more overgrown than they are in the original picture that I was referencing, which I thought was an interesting way to portray growth and abundance through my artwork.
