Director's Notes Grades 6 & 7
MTC put on Alice in Wonderland JR. with our younger half of the Junior Company just two weeks ago. The show was a great celebration and opportunity for the talents finishing grades 4-5. During the process, we noticed that some things that worked with that cast likely weren’t going to work with our 6-7 graders who would be putting on the same show, and vice versa. We wanted to look at Alice from a new point of view to re-engage the audience in Wonderland again, as well challenge our older Junior Company members. It’s not often there is a Junior show that can be interpreted under a new lens because most scripts are very literal, however Wonderland can be almost anything! With great brainstorming and teamwork, we are proud to present our first “revival” of an MTC show. This new take on Alice in Wonderland JR. brings us to the “Wonderland Circus”, inspired by works such as Coraline, Pippin, Dumbo, and many others. This production would not be possible without the trust in the process by our team of staff and perhaps even more importantly, our cast. Our cast has been incredible to work with and have had such great input and creativity through the process as well that really helped grow the starting idea even further. We hope you enjoy the Wonderland Circus!
Director's Note Grades 4 & 5
Over the past few years, the MYT Junior Company has continued to grow and raise the bar in their MainStage and summer productions. This summer we split our Junior Company in half for two productions of Alice in Wonderland JR. We chose to split the group for two reasons, the first being there is so much talent to showcase within the Junior Company. This session, our soon-to-be 5th and 6th graders had the challenge of producing a Junior Company show without the 7th and 8th graders. These students rose to the occasion and seized the opportunities in front of them! The group started the first day of camp ready to dive into the show and as the week went on they continued to prove that they were ready to be on their own with their dedication to practice at home and through the camp day, even during downtime without prompting from the staff. The second reason for the two groupings was for our casts to feel like families and truly get to know one another and enjoy their time together at camp. This family-feeling makes our show special. I’m so proud of what this group accomplished and they should be as well!
