MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear parents/carers,

This week we have busy been with assessments. The phonics screening check took place with children in year one and those new to the school in year two. The progress since the mock assessment has shown such a positive impact of the extra practice of learning at school and home. Our bespoke phonics programme is highly successful and supports children in their Early Reading. We will await to hear the threshold mark to see the overall figures but we are delighted in every individual achievement.

Children in year 2 - 5 have carried out their summer assessments. There has been a positive buzz and conversation around assessments and what they know and can remember. This is such a great attitude to learning and progress. Our children are keen to do well and see how much they have learned. We look forward to sharing their achievements with you in their end of year of reports.

During assembly this week, children enjoyed reflecting on healthy eating. They looked at the Eatwell plate and considered sugars and salts in food. The health visitor also spoke about dental health. The children loved the quiz! They were also surprised that some of their favourite snacks and lunchtime items were higher in salt and sugar than they thought. I know that it made me reconsider the number of Pepperami’s and cheese strings that are consumed by members of my household.

Children continued to consider fitness with our representatives hitting the track at the KS2 Borough Sports. They demonstrated speed, agility and pure grit alongside their great teamwork. Well done to all involved for your gold, silver and bronze medals and for keeping Darlinghurst’s position in the first division!

Next week we continue with sports here at Darlinghurst with our sports days on Tuesday and Wednesday. This is always a well-planned and enjoyed event.

Our choir are attending the music festival this evening. This is a fantastic event and spreads good cheer and wellbeing to all involved. We know that singing and music is great for the soul.

Tiny Tiddler Tribe are hitting the beach on Tuesday for an outdoor learning event with Miss Wise and Mrs Arnold. If you have a toddler and wish to join the group, bookings are available by Mrs Alexander.

Next Friday we have our year 6 enterprise day. I know that they are keen to share their products and activities with others in the school. It is a fun and engaging afternoon.

Finally, I am delighted to share that we have achieved the GOLD award in PE for the 4th consecutive year and can now apply for Platinum. Mr Felton and Mr Blewett are 100% motivated to gain this level next.

We also have confirmation that we are a green flag school – with distinction AGAIN! The feedback from Eco-schools was amazing and a clear demonstration of the work and commitment that we show at Darlinghurst. Mrs Powell is over the moon!

As always enjoy your family time together.

Mrs Nicholls

Sports News

Rounders

It’s been a busy few weeks for the PE department with lots of competitions in a variety of sports. Firstly, our Rounders team were in action in a local competition at Thorpe Hall. There were 2 competitions one in the morning for our main team and an emerging competition in the afternoon for our newly formed team. Both teams did amazingly with our main team finishing in third position overall and our emerging team claiming the top spot.

Cricket

Our next outing was cricket. Going into any competition as the defending champions is always tough, however our cricket team did not allow this to phase them and for the second year running reached the final. It was a close-run game with lots of wickets being taken from both teams. At the end of the day, the game took a turn against our team and they finished runners up. Qualifying for the Essex finals in July will give them yet another chance to bring home a trophy. We wish them all good luck.

Borough Sports

Finally, it was the biggest competition of the year, Borough Sports. As I’m sure you are aware, over the last 6 years we have had a considerable amount of success in this competition culminating in our school reaching the top division. This puts us in the top 10 schools in the area and into a very tough division. As always, our children worked incredibly hard to reach the standards needed to be competitive in this division and whilst we did not finish in the top 3 schools we did come back with an amazing 16 individual medals.

Well done to all of our fantastic squads.

Early Years

This week Hanli from LRBC came to visit the children in Early Years to help them make ‘little Boats’ The children have been learning all about the story ‘Little boat’ that links closely with the Academy values of determination, confidence and belonging.

During the activity of making the little boats the children thought about the adventures that he went on, how he travelled across the whole ocean, the obstacles he encountered and how with the help from his friends and being brave he was able to succeed.

Great learning EYFS!

Tiny Tiddlers

On Thursday, our Tiny Tiddlers headed to the park for a summer outing! They love going on adventures together and have formed friendships for life. Our toddler group is such a happy place and parents and carers have formed strong relationships too. Miss Wise loves the group and getting to know families sooner and spending time with our very tiny ones.

Sports Day 2024

Next week we will be holding our annual sports day (see above for dates). For the day to run smoothly, we would appreciate your support in the following:

  • Children to wear a shirt in their house colour (HMS Ganges - Blue, HMS Raleigh Yellow, HMS Dolphin - Green or HMS Vincent – Red)
  • All children should have a labelled water bottle
  • Sun cream should be applied before your child comes to school and they should also have a sun hat
  • Spectators, please stand behind the taped off areas

Entrance to the sports day will be via the gate at the bottom of the field, on Darlinghurst Grove.

We look forward to seeing you all for two days of fun and, hopefully, warm weather!

Euros 2024

In celebration of the Euros 2024, the kitchen will be having a special menu on Thursday 20th June. The usual pasta, pick n mix and jacket potato will also be available.

PTA

Our PTA have been busy as ever giving out gifts to the men in our children’s lives, 148 gifts were given out for children to pass on to show their love and appreciation for their dads, uncles, grandads, brother or that special man in their lives. Thank you for supporting this event and we hope that everyone enjoys the day on Sunday and the gifts make them smile.

We will be selling more Wonka bars soon, watch this space, and then we will be giving out the prizes for our Golden Ticket winners.

Thank you again for your support, without you we could not support our fabulous academy. If you would like to be part of our wonderful team please email Mrs Lowe on mrslowe@darlinghursacademy.org.uk
