Students will travel to a different organization each day, giving their time and effort to serve the needs of the school, care facility, or charitable enterprise. Students will learn how nonprofits pour money back into their organizations to fund their important missions rather than paying out profits to investors. Students will also learn that in doing their good work, nonprofits can earn tax-exempt status.
Day 1
Today we traveled to the NH Food Bank and helped prepare food for those in need.
"Today, we spent time at the NH Food Bank where we assisted with meal preparation and assembly. I learned a lot today, not only about food, but about what this association does. They provide food for those who need it, wether through their wear-house, or at neutral site, this non-profit organization provides food for families in need. While helping out today with meal preparation, I learned not only that an onion burns eyes, but also how to chop and slice it accordingly. Visiting the food bank brought out community together in so many ways. I interacted and helped people usually would not have if it were not for this organization. Because there was so much hands on work, there was a lot of room for collaboration and group work, which I think brought out group closer together." -Madeline Hannon
Day 2
"Today we helped our at the Paul Smith Elementary school. I helped in the first grade classroom with one other classmate. There were many different children in the room with different needs. The biggest challenge today was spending time with all the children, and trying to prevent children being upset about not having enough time with us. All the kids were very excited about there being “big kids” in the room and got jealous easily when another child got to sit next to us and they didn’t. I managed this by trying to have the children learn how to take turns with who gets to sit next to me when, and this was very affective and prevented more meltdowns. I definitely want to have children when I’m older and it’s a big goal of mine, so this was a nice experience to get to see children during the day in action at school, and taught me a lot about children’s behaviors." - Madeline Garden
Day 3
Seacoast Science Center (Portsmouth). Todays blog post and pictures are brought to you from Sarp Oskan & Ian Monteiro do Amaral!
Today began with organizing a class, making sure everything was set up for a smooth and engaging session. After that, we headed to the beach to collect trash, doing our part to keep the environment clean. It was a fulfilling day of learning, teamwork, and making a positive impact!
Day 4
Today, we went to the New Hampshire Veterans Home. We socialized with the veterans at a Coffee Social where we heard many life stories from veterans, and played games with them such as blackjack, and a ball tossing game, where we saw their personalities shine. We ended the day with singing some music and even playing some instruments.
Day 5
Today we volunteered at Make A Wish in Manchester, NH. This is a reflection shared by Ben Bourbeau, "Today, we went to the Make A Wish foundation’s location in Manchester, NH. We spent time organizing and taking inventory on toys which are gifted to the children when they are visited by members of the foundation. My contribution to the success of the group included taking inventory of a select number of toys, which the entire group did, to contribute to the quick success of cleaning the room. Later in the day, we spent time building gift bags for children with wishes, which was something that felt very personalized and I felt special that I was able to contribute to a child’s happiness."
