President's Message
Dear SCAOHN Members,
As we step into the beauty of fall—with its cooler mornings, brightly colored leaves, and a sense of renewal—I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared this year. It’s been a season of growth, reconnection, and purpose, and I’m so grateful to be walking this path with each of you.
Back in the spring, we launched a strategic growth campaign with hope and determination. At the time, our membership had dipped to around 75—but today, I’m thrilled to share that we’ve grown to 125 members strong! That’s a 66% increase, and it speaks volumes about the passion and dedication within our occupational health nursing community. Whether you’ve been with us for years or just joined recently, please know: you matter, and we’re so glad you’re here.
One of the best ways to celebrate this growth is by coming together—and we’ll have the perfect opportunity at our Fall Conference in North Charleston on October 2–3. This event promises to be full of learning, laughter, and meaningful connections. We have a fantastic lineup of speakers and sessions, and we truly hope you’ll join us. It’s going to be special.
As we look ahead, I want to personally invite you to get involved. SCAOHN is more than an organization—it’s a community. And communities thrive when everyone has a voice. Whether you’re interested in joining a committee, exploring a role on the Board of Directors, or simply sharing your ideas, there’s a place for you here. Your experience, your insight, and your passion for this field are what make us strong.
Thank you for all you do—for your associates, your workplaces, and for each other. Let’s keep growing, supporting, and celebrating together.
Best,
SCAOHN 2025 FALL Conference

Organization News
In May 2025, SCAOHN was designated as a recipient of Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC)'s Philanthropic Giving Program. SRMC donated $1,000 to SCAOHN to support the essential work that our organization does in the community. SRMC is the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site and oversees the safe treatment and disposal of the Site’s high-level waste.
As part of SRMC's Community Commitment Plan, SRMC provides financial contributions to qualifying 501(c)(3) or similar non-profit organizations each year. SRMC employees are able to recommend organizations, and the recommendations are reviewed by SRMC's Employee Giving Council which provides recommendations to SRMC Leadership to make informed decisions about which organizations will receive donations from the company.
Thank you to SRMC for supporting SCAOHN!

Camp Sweet Escape: Felicia Delk
SCAOHN Communication Director, Felicia Delk, volunteered at Camp Sweet Escape for her 10th summer in a row this year. Camp Sweet Escape (CSE) is a camp for children with type 1 diabetes (and their siblings or friends). CSE allows children with type 1 to have a normal and medically safe summer camp experience. Each summer CSE hosts around 100 campers.
Felicia began volunteering at CSE after a former nursing school instructor reached out to see if she would be interested in volunteering. Felicia is very thankful to her instructor as they were able to serve at camp together and camp has brought Felicia some of her closest friends. Over the years Felicia has continued to volunteer as medical staff and for the past two years has served as co-director.
"Camp is always the highlight of my summer and something that I look forward to as soon as it's over" Felicia recalls. Felicia encourages anyone who is interested in volunteering at Camp Sweet Escape to reach out to her directly. She also encourages looking into volunteer opportunities at other summer camps as well.

Fall Into a Routine
As the days grow shorter and the pace of life begins to shift, fall is the perfect time to establish healthy routines that support both your body and mind. While summer often bring spontaneity and flexibility, fall encourages us to settle into a rhythm that can bring balance and stability.
Creating or re-establishing a routine doesn't have to be overwhelming. Start small and focus on areas that nurture your overall well-being.
*Sleep: Aim for a consistent bedtime and wake-up schedule. Quality rest supports immunity, focus and emotional resilience.
*Movement: Incorporate regular physical activity, even if it's as simple as a brisk evening walk in the crisp fall air.
*Nutrition: Take advantage of seasonal produce (apples, squash and leafy greens) to fuel your body with fresh, nourishing foods.
*Mindfulness: Build in small moments of calm, like journaling, gratitude reflections or unplugging before bed.
When you fall into a routine, you give yourself the gift of stability, clarity and energy which helps you feel grounded as the year winds down.
Check out the article below for more information on the benefits of new routines to help the shift into Fall feel effortless.

Monthly Health Awareness Topics

September is National Recovery Month
To highlight recovery month, we are highlighting Ms. Karen Owens' daughter, Toni Smith. Toni has been a Peer Support Specialist at the Oconee Magdelene Center. She recently obtained her certification as a Doula Support Specialist which will allow her to work in doctors' offices alongside pregnant women with abuse disorders. She will be able to walk with them along their journey and be in the delivery room with them as well. Toni is a passionate advocate for pregnant women navigating substance use.
Toni's personal experience regarding the stigma surrounding substance use and pregnancy drives her to be a consistent, supportive presence for women who feel judged or alone. She is using her skills and experience to walk beside women with empathy and understanding while building trust and connections. Toni is motivated to be what she once needed: someone (outside of a woman's immediate circle) that encourages, uplifts and informs pregnant women in recovery of their choices. Her dream is to reduce stigma, build support networks and one day train others to offer this care.
Toni also encourages those with interest and prior experience with substance use disorder to look into becoming a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS). CPSS are trained individuals who use their experience to support others. Toni also recommends attending the additional training after becoming a CPSS to become a doula. She hopes that this program will grow and thrive.
