Brief

The brief for this project is to create an anime opening inspired by a Japanese song, with motion-based lyrics within the video created with After Effects. This would be accompanied by a motion poster that will also be made with After Effects that's made for social media which would promote the anime and add to the aesthetics of the whole project. The target audience for this design is young adults aged between 18 to 25 who are interested in Anime and Japanese songs. I want the audience to have fun with my interpretation of this song, and lead to individuals to be more interested in the song and the Japanese song genre.

FINAL PROJECT VIDEOS

Anime Opening

Note: If possible please watch the videos in a video setting higher than 1080p HD (i.e. 1440p, 4k) as for some reason the video is quite blurry in a lower setting even in 1080p HD.

Motion Poster

INITIAL IDEATION

The initial idea that I had was to create a lyric video with an accompanying Spotify looping video. But after receiving feedback from tutors and peers during Tutorials, I found that it was too similar to the idea and style of my assignment 1, and needed to explore a different kind of mediums to expand my skills and portfolio.

Initial Song - Flamingo by Yonezu Kenshi

FINAL IDEA

For my final idea, I chose to make an anime opening for a imaginary anime inspired by the song Demons's Banquet by Tomanari Sora, where I liked the mood of the song and it's unique tone. Furthermore it had a specific storyline and subject, which is Japanese monsters (yokai), where I could quiet easily build upon that and create scenes that would match that aesthetic. Furthermore, I was still able to do something similar to a Japanese music video which I liked the style of, and utilise a song that I like which made the process more enjoyable.

RESEARCH Part 1

For the first part of the project I looked into different anime openings mainly for two factors, visual research and analysing what goes into an anime opening. For the visual research, I looked into animes with darks moods and tones, especially the anime Jujutsu Kaisen when is quite similar to the tone that I want to achieve, having the main colours as red and black.

Jujutsu Kaisen

They use red glows on the characters to the scene as being bloody and eerie where the characters and the scenes are very dark and mysterious.

Cowboy Bepop

This anime was recommded to me during a peer review session during the Tutorial where it uses a lot of shadows and line art instead of the usually fully animated scenes, which matched the aesthetics that I wanted with my project. Both because I have an strong preference for minimalistic visual qualities, and because I didn't have the time or skills to create fully animated scenes.

RESEARCH PART 2

For the second part of the project which is a motion poster to advertise the anime, I looked into anime posters and how they position their text and subjects and their ratio. I furthermore did some research into some motion posters and what arts of the poster I could maybe animate.

I found that usually the subjects takes a bigger ratio than the title of the anime, and they include the main characters.

TYPOGRAPHY ANIMATION RESERACH

As my main inspiration for the text animations are from Japanese lyric music videos I looked back at the the music videos research that I did for assignment 1 as it was still a mainly a lyric video so I could look at the frames and be more inspired and experimental compared to the that assignment where I was more restrained. This part of the research helped me a lot as I was able explore the different types of text animation there are and see how they are utilised along with the scene. I was also able to step out of my comfort zone and explore more types of design styles while still having having my preference of my personal taste.

MOODBOARD

My main visual inspirations were images that apear quite elegant and eerie at the same time, where I did not want the video to be filled with distorted monsters that are scary. I wanted the images to present as quite aesthetic and beautiful but still having that eerie mood.

STORYBOARD

Anime Opening

For the storyboard I mainly planned out what kind of elements would go on each scene and what kind of movements they would be making. There were adjustments and changes made during the design processes that were different from this storyboard.

Motion Poster

For the motion poster, I planned out what kind of elements would go on the page and how the whole poster would look like.

STYLE FRAME

The style frames mainly show the mood of the project which is eerie and dark, while having a traditional Japanese aesthetic.

Drawing Softwares

The digital drawing tools that I mainly used were Procreate and Clip Studio Paint, where I used procreate for some of the more simple drawings, and clip studio paint for the more complex ones.

Character Sketches

I did not colour any of my characters and only did a simple line art because firstly it was easier to change the tones of the scene if they are transparent layers, and I wanted them to be simple and minimalistic.

Character 1

My first character is a Japanese monster with long hair and horns, where I took reference of a image online for his pose and mouth and further added the details of the rest of the drawing.

Drawing process

I started with a sketch of the whole design then went into detail in different layers.

Character 2

For the second character I had to be careful that I was not copying the original artwork, and I had to make changes to some of the features. Though I could not make it completely different i still did my best to make this artwork more unique.

Demon

For the demon, because I didn't have the illustration skills to draw something detailed like this I traced a stock photo of a Japanese demon.

CHARACTER RIGGING

I wanted there to be moving elements to be moving monsters within my anime opening, and did not have the time or skills to do fully animated characters. Therefore I found that I could rig characters from stock photos and their limbs within after effects. I found a video on Youtube that inspired me to separate the character's limbs in photoshop and I was able to animate the characters.

I put them on their individual layers then exported the files to after effects to animate each limb.

Anime Opening Design Process

Motion Design Principal

For the anime opening I wanted to utilise and focus on various parts of the motion design principle. Where firstly for Type, I took my time to choose a typeface that would match the tone of my project. Furthermore, I utilised elaboration with glitching effects and black boxes behind texts to create exaggeration and highlight the lyrics within a frame so that they stand out. For the colour of the text, I used a lot of contrast of saturation and tone from the background. I mainly used a highly saturated red colour for the text and desaturated red tones for the background. Following my preference for minimalistic designs, I utilised Space fully in my designs, leaving rooms in the frames so that the didn't look overly filled and overwhelming.

In the design of time, I utilised mainly horizontal movements and very far proximity for the text. I made sure to use sequential proximity for the legibility of the texts. and allowing the text to disappear or appear according to the sound of the lyrics. Additionally, I used a lot of opaque layering in my designs, overlaying image elements and texts on top of each other with fully blocked colours, where I found that a more translucent tone did not match the aesthetics of my design. With the lyrics on my design, I utilised dynamic juxtaposition where I placed the text directly on top of the moving images where I wanted the image and text to work together to create a finalised tone. Then for the pacing of the video, I wanted a more fast-paced rhythm as the frames followed the beat of the music where I wanted the frames to feel as though they transition quite quickly to the next, but still leave enough time on each frame so that it doesn't feel rushed.

After Effects Process

For the beginning part of the video I wanted the shapes to move according to the beats therefore it was quite difficult to time. I put markers on the sound so that I could time it right, but still had to make quite some adjustments so that they looked right.

Using the character I drew and adding a shape layer to add glowing eyes effect by using a more saturated red tone compared to the background. And using the rigged characters where I overlayed them on the scene with 'multiply' where I frequently explored different overlaying effects for the images and elements so that I could have an evenly matched tone throughout the video.

For the next scenes there is a hair extending out into the scene which I animated separately in Procreate, I quite like the effects of the screen as it creates a eventual contrast and good motion for the scene. Then for the background I animated the lyric to move slowly towards different directions.

For this project I frequently utilised the 'Fractal Noise' effect which I found that it perfectly matched the mood and theme for my video when used well. I animated the evolution so that they turn slowly almost like blood turning, and I used the circle with the fractal noise effect to represent the mood, which I was quite satisfied with.

For the next scene, it was inspired by one of the scenes in the original music video of the song(0:11), where it had glowing heads floating on a black background which I found very interesting. I animated a blinking eye in Procreate so that I could duplicate in and fill the scene in after effects.

Then I created a filled in version of the demon from the opening so that I could put text behind the image and create a sense of depth. Furthermore, within this project, I often utilised the 'VR digital glitch' effect quite frequently as it created a eerie buzz that elevated the mood of the frames. It also adds

For the chorus of the song utilised a animated mouth that is smiling, which I drew in Clip studio paint. Where I overlapped it with glitching text and changed the overlaying setting in the following frames to create a visually interesting scene. This also adds a exaggerating effect for the text which creates a stronger tone for the scene and potentially how the text is perceived by the viewer. I also wanted to use the character 1 that I drew making him change slightly change in position and scale within the frame. Furthermore, for the chorus I wanted to create a more cinematic effect so I added black rectangles to the top and bottom of the frames so that It would mimic a cinematic frame size.

Then I used the rigged character that I made and the bloody moon that I designed in the earlier frame to create a scene that would kind of feel like people begging the demons in hell. Where I stretched out the shape of a duplicated moon to make it seem like the moonlight.

Then with the final frames I didn't wan't to do too much animation as that might be a bit overwhelming, and I did not have enough time to draw new elements. I kept the frames simple with simple animations. Where I used a stock photo of a temple and used a different overlay that made it blend in with the scene. Then I found a stock photo of a spider lily, which is a flower that is often associated with death and hell in Japan. I animated it in procreate so that the petals would move and sway.

In the final few frames it was mainly reusing elements from before and the final credits.

Adding the Credits

For the different credits in the scenes I reference different animes and what they mainly write for the credits. The video that I referenced mainly was the video below where I basically replicated what they had for the names of roles introduced in the credits, such as character designer, sound designer, producer and etc. I took photos of individual roles so that I could add them in so that I could create a authentic feeling anime opening.

Video Export

For this project I met quite a few issues with exporting the videos from after effects, where the video colour quality was low in the exported videos. The exported video was very blurry and was only fixed when exported with 4k video quality and was only not blurry when watched on a setting that is higher than 1080p HD. While with the colour, the exported video was a bit washed out and desaturated compared to the original video. I was not able to fix the colour issue, but upon consultation with the tutor I left the issue as it was not too noticeable.

Original
Export

The difference is not very prevalent in the photos above where I think it is because of the dark backgrounds of this express page, but because this colour difference exists throughout the video I think it does make the tones of the video a but less vibrant.

DESIGN PROCESS_MOTION POSTER

For the motion poster I first planned out what the layout would be and where I might place the motions, then made colour adjustments to the character so that It would look more interesting for the frame.

I imported my character image into photoshop so that I could make it into a portrait frame and export it into after effects. Then I animated different aspects on the page, but mainly the dripping ball, where I found a great tutorial that taught me to make this using 'cc smear' which worked great for the aesthetics of the poster.

Then I animated glowing circles on to the character to create a eerie demon eye effect, which I made it mimic blinking by changing it's opacity.

Reflection

This project was an exciting experience as it was the first time I created my visual elements for a large motion project. I was able to step out of my comfort zone and produce motion designs that I did not think of before. Although it was challenging I enjoyed making the drawings and controlling the tones of my project.

Some of the challenges that I met during the project were designing the different frames, where because it was a 1-minute video I had to make sure that it didn’t feel repetitive or boring especially when I had limited time to create unique elements to utilise. I also had trouble making the frames look balanced as the image and text had to move together within a frame, I often found myself trying to do too much or add too many elements on a frame which made the frame look very crowded and unaesthetic. I had to learn to hold back and only add the necessary amount of elements to a frame. Another challenge I met was the lack of time, where I did not have enough time to create more illustrated elements to put on a frame. Although I did my best to produce as many elements to the project as possible I still think that I could have added more. However, I was not able to achieve this as I had other assignments with other course units which limited the amount of time I had to work on this project. The final issue that I faced with this project is that the exported video had a colour difference to the original designs within after effects. Where the colours were washed out and desaturated, and I was not able to resolve this with several attempts. Although I received feedback that it does not matter too much, I still wished that I could have fixed this issue and produce the best result I could have produced.

Overall, I think the project turned out satisfactorily, as I did my best in my given time frame and worked as efficiently as possible. In future projects, I would like to step further out of my comfort zone to create different types of designs. Exploring different styles of motion design there are in the field and gaining more experience and insight, as right now I am restrained within my personal preference. This would allow me to expand my skillsets and design insights that would assist me in my future career.
