Canbury School Newsletter 16th May 2025. ISSUE 367

Heads Welcome

Dear families, students, staff and friends

What a busy week it's been, as you'll see in the newsletter! It feels like just yesterday we were starting this half-term, and now we're already counting down the days to the break – where has the time gone!

Alongside our usual busy school life, this week has also seen us well underway with public examinations. Our students have been tackling papers in English, Geography, Science, Maths, History, and Business, and we wish them all the very best as they continue with their exams.

We also welcomed the local Safer Schools Team this week, who delivered important sessions to our students. Their talks focused on staying safe within our community and provided valuable information regarding drugs awareness.

Lastly, a reminder to check your emails for the information on next week's whole school sponsored walk.

Wear Green for Mental Health Day

Today, Canbury turned a little greener as students and staff donned vibrant shades to mark Wear Green for Mental Health Day. From bold jumpers to a green cravat, the collective splash of green was a powerful visual reminder of our commitment to fostering open conversations and supporting one another's well-being.

A Delightful Visit to Sherwood Grange

Noah, Ella, Max, Soren, Lexi and Reenie ventured down to visit the residents at Sherwood Grange Care Home on Monday afternoon as part of their PSHE enrichment. They had a delightful time creating garden ornaments using decoupage, before enjoying a sing-a-long in the garden with Ella on guitar. We’re looking forward to another visit next half-term.

Year 7's Unique Expressions in Clay Masks

Year 7 artists have been busy bringing their identities to life in clay! Their recent project involved creating skull masks adorned with self-designed symbols, drawing inspiration from the intricate symbolism of Celtic and Adinkra traditions. This hands-on exploration encouraged students to think deeply about what makes them unique.

They designed and sculpted their own unique symbols to represent aspects of their individual identities. The resulting masks are personal artistic expressions, showcasing both their creative skills and their thoughtful engagement with cultural heritage.

Saving Lives: Year 10 Gets to Grips with CPR

This week in PSHE, Year 10s continued their first aid topic by learning the basics of CPR. Students learnt how to approach someone who is in need of first aid and practised CPR on the school’s ‘Mini Annies’. The lesson ended with students working in pairs to administer CPR until a (fictitious) ambulance arrived to take over!

Campbell Wins the Week!

Interhouse cricket looks set to become an annual Canbury event as staff and students gravitated to the playground again this week to watch Campbell take on Noble. Campbell were this week’s winners and they will be taking on Johnson next Wednesday. Watch this space!

Celebrity Scribbles

Our talented Year 8 artists have recently completed a vibrant and energetic portrait project, drawing inspiration from the distinctive scribbly line drawings of Vince Low. Taking on the exciting challenge of celebrity portraiture, students used only black ink pens to capture the likeness and character of well-known figures through a dynamic network of seemingly abstract lines.

The results are a striking collection of expressive portraits that showcase the students' keen observational skills and their willingness to explore contemporary techniques, proving that even the simplest of marks can create powerful and recognizable imagery.

Eco Team's Sweet Success!

Thank you for all the delicious bake sale donations in support of Eco Team’s biodiversity project. They are hoping to buy some wildflower seeds and lavender to plant in the school’s front garden. Environmental Prefect, Flora, has some great advice for supporting biodiversity at home.

Support Mr. Hussain in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

On Sunday, May 18th 2025, tens of thousands of distinguished gentlefolk in hundreds of cities worldwide will don their cravats, tweak their moustaches, press their tweed and sit astride their classic and vintage styled motorcycles to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and men’s mental health programs.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men.

307,000 men will die from prostate cancer each year.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men aged 20-39, with ¾ of all suicides being male.

Our very own resident petrol-head Mr Hussain will be joining the ride in London and you can help him raise money for these great causes. Just click on the link below:
