CTE Newsletter March Recap

CTSO Recap given by CTSO Officer Skylar Landen

"March has been a busy month for CTSO. Digital Media took a trio to Rancho Viejo Middle School to introduce their program to incoming students. We also held a CTE Advisory meeting which included giving members of the HUSD tours of our evolving program classrooms. This whole month we have been preparing for a financial literacy fair to be held next month for all students at Tahquitz. We have collaborated with many teachers and companies within the community to help us give important information to students regarding financing and future careers."

Construction

On March 17th, Patrick from MITA will be on campus to lead a brick veneer training session, providing students with valuable hands-on experience directly applicable to real-world construction jobs. This training is part of our effort to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful careers in the union construction industry. Then, on March 18th, the construction team will be working after school to prepare for the CIE Foundation Design Build Competition, taking place on April 9th and 10th. This competition offers students the chance to apply their skills in a real-world setting, gaining experience that will further prepare them for future careers in construction. For more details about the competition, feel free to visit the CIE Foundation Southern California website.

Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine 1 focused on hands-on infection control methods, learning how to properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitize surfaces, and prevent the spread of germs in healthcare and athletic environments. Students practiced essential techniques to ensure safety in sports medicine settings.

Sports Medicine 2 explored head injuries and common sports-related injuries, gaining a deeper understanding of concussions, facial injuries, and treatment protocols. Students also learned about injury prevention, rehabilitation strategies, and real-world applications used by athletic trainers and healthcare professionals.

Entrepreneurship

Year 1's have been working on finishing our business plans. This Is a long lesson where students choose a business, research the information and then write a business plan for their business. They have recently completed their 1st round of public speaking lessons by giving a 30 second elevator pitch on their business.

Year 2 students have wrapped up their T-shirt project assignments. They then learned how to protect their creations via patents, copyrights & trademarks. Then we learned how to structure our business organizations & understand how organizations are structured. They have also started working on several rounds of basic certification in the areas of leadership, copyrights and proper social media usage.

Theater Tech

This past learning block has been about learning how to hand-sew four basic stitches and apply buttons to fabric. Theater tech students culminated the block in the creation of little pin cushions with short phrases and little designs made entirely from hand-sewn stitching--which all apply to designing and repairing costumes for the stage and screen.

Digital Media

Digital Media students have been busy this semester, gaining valuable hands-on experience in filmmaking and photography. Academy students had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Tolerance, where they were able to connect their learning to real-world history, while Level 2 students toured the Warner Bros. backlot, exploring the heart of film production. Students also participated in work-based learning projects, capturing images at a media day for baseball and softball. In collaboration with Ms. Reichle’s acting class, students have been working on producing their own films, applying their skills in both production and storytelling. Meanwhile, Level 1 students have been developing their photography abilities through an "ABC Alphabet" project, focusing on creative composition and image capture.

Student Spotlights

Yaretxy Hernandez Fragoso

"At the North Las Vegas annual 46th CFEA Fire Acamdey, 112 young explorers went through many dangerous and difficult situations, working in zero visibility environments, unbreathable conditions, and were put into workplaces with several other people they knew nothing about. I out of 6 others explorers where chosen due to our initiative and leadership in our explorer post. Hemet Post #620 has 7 explores chosen, 2 being female and 5 being male. I was chosen to be a captain at the fire Acamdey due to my hard work and dedication. My passion for the fire service is what made me stand out from the rest of the 16 captains. I was in charge of 5 boys in my squad, and in a male dominant field I had to work twice as hard to get recognition, luckily that’s what I do best. Throughout these 7 long days, we would wake up at 5:30 am, have a tight schedule, and everyday there would be something new and different that we would learn. 15 girls, and 97 boys learned 10 hours of firefighter skills, 10 hours of fire behavior, 10 hours of auto-Extrication, and 10 hours of Vehicle Fire Tactics and Strategies. We went though hard and physical training, made many bonds and connections, those 5 boys I once knew nothing about, I now know everything, not only was this experience an amazing opportunity, it opened my eyes more and gave me more confidence in myself to be able to do greater things and push myself more than I could’ve done before. This past week taught me the importance of the fire service, it’s not only about saving lives, and fighting fires, but to build a family, and at the end of the day we all have one another’s backs." - Yaretxy Hernandez Fragoso
