Welcome back to school for Term 4!

It was great to welcome our new and existing students and families back to school on Tuesday for this last quarter of the academic school year. We hope that everyone had a restful holiday break and enjoyed the change in routine.

Term 4 is always traditionally a very busy time in our school. There are a variety of assessment tasks, exams, activities and special events on the school calendar as we head into the end of the year. Please keep a regular eye on our calendar of events, and also your email inbox to keep abreast of everything that is happening this term.

A reminder that consistent attendance is essential for student learning and wellbeing, ensuring every child has the best opportunity to succeed. We also encourage families to partner with us by checking uniforms each morning and supporting punctual, regular attendance—together, we can help every student finish the year strong!

Good luck Year 12!

HSC exams are here... Year 12 you’ve got this!

Yesterday, tens of thousands of students across NSW started their HSC exams. Close to 75,000 HSC students will put pen to paper over the next 16 test days, with the written exams officially underway beginning with English Paper 1.

HSC written exams mark the conclusion of 13 years of schooling for our students, providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned during their education. Students will receive their HSC results and ATAR on Thursday 18 December.

Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said:

“You have done the hard work - now is the time to stay focused, look after yourself, and follow a healthy study schedule. Thank you to the hard-working teachers of NSW who’ve prepared HSC students for this moment and to all the teachers who have guided students through their 13 years of schooling.”

Everyone at Byron Bay High School sends best wishes to our Year 12 students... Believe in your hard work and stay calm — each exam is just a step closer to your future. You've got this!

We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated and hard-working teachers, Executive team, and support staff who have worked tirelessly to prepare our Year 12 for their HSC exams. Their commitment and support have made an incredible difference in our student's lives.

A big thank you as well to all the families behind the scenes, whose encouragement and care provide the foundation for our students' success. Together, we are supporting our Year 12 students as they take this important step toward their futures.

E-bike safety

A crucial conversation for parents and students

E-bikes can be a fun and efficient way to travel, but they must be used responsibly.

All bikes on our school grounds must remain on the grass and be parked in the nominated bike racks along the basketball courts

By law, e-bikes are not allowed to travel faster than 25 km/hr. Riders must also use a bell to alert pedestrians when passing, and helmets are mandatory for safety. These rules are in place to prevent accidents and injuries — yet, not everyone is following them.

Recently, there have been incidents with e-bikes in our local area where riders (and the motorists involved) have been seriously hurt or shaken. These incidents have been a stark reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when safety guidelines are ignored.

We urge parents and carers to have constant conversations with their children to ensure that they are aware of the rules associated with riding an e-bike.

Make sure they understand the speed limits, the importance of using a bell, obeying the road rules, and always wearing a helmet. Together, we can help ensure our community remains a safe place for everyone.

A reminder that anyone parking a vehicle or bike/e-bike on school premises (staff and students) does so at their own risk. On our school grounds all bikes including e-bikes can only be locked to the bike racks near the basketball courts... no where else. The Department of Education does not allow e-bikes to be parked against / near buildings or structures. This is vital for the safety of our students and staff, and also for the safety of our school campus.

Exploring the Great Outdoors

Year 9s hike the Yuraygir National Park

Year 9 Outdoor Education students recently embraced the opportunity to walk and explore in Yuraygir National Park. Setting forth from Angourie to hike to Brooms Head, students arrived with the best attitude, prepared to embrace the great outdoors. With an acknowledgement of our collective past as a guide to future possibilities, students were open to learning from country.

Beauty and diversity was encountered as we accessed areas only possible with astute planning and preparation. In such remote and wild spaces, students found wonder in the natural world.

All teachers involved in this excursion, Ms Murray, Mr Hernage and myself, were beyond impressed with the maturity and positive attitude of the group. We all look forward to our next adventure together.

Curtain Up!

Year 10 students inspired by local play 'When I Grow Up'

On Wednesday 15 October, Year 10 students were invited to attend a local theatre production in Mullumbimby called ‘When I Grow Up’.

This production explored issues faced by those who struggle with the school system and choose to leave early, as well as, those who choose to continue on to Year 12, dealing with the range of demands entering into adulthood. The production showed support, and options available, for both choices.

Students also had a panel at the end of the performance from Southern Cross University, TAFE and a local business man discussing the important attributes and skills needed in finding and holding a job with the main one being hard work and willingness to learn.

New Social Media Age Restrictions

From 10 December 2025, Australian law changes the rules for anyone under 16 using social media

Image courtesy of the ABC BTN

CTRL SHFT has provided a downloadable, short, student-friendly guide explains exactly what’s happening, why it matters, and what you can do right now to protect your content and your digital rights. This guide helps students, parents, and educators understand the new national minimum-age requirements for platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube, and X (Twitter) and more.

It breaks down the law in plain language no jargon, no fear, just facts.

Students will learn:

  • Which platforms are affected and why accounts will be removed for under-16s.
  • How age-verification and facial-age estimation work (and what their privacy options are).
  • The difference between deletion and deactivation.
  • How to download and keep photos, videos, and messages before accounts disappear.
  • How to challenge a wrong age decision or report a platform that isn’t following the rules.
  • Their ongoing rights to privacy, safety, and respect online.

Give your child the knowledge and confidence to navigate the new law safely. Download, print, or share the guide and help make the online world fairer, safer, and easier to understand:
