Creating a positive and engaging learning environment at home for children aged 4 to 10 can be a truly rewarding experience. It doesn’t require a dedicated room or expensive furniture—just a cozy little corner that belongs to your child, where learning feels like fun rather than a chore. This could be a small table by the window, a part of the dining area, or even a cushion-filled corner of the living room. Decorate it with cheerful pictures, and keep essential supplies like crayons, books, paper, and puzzles within reach. When children have their own special space, it helps them feel settled and ready to learn. Organising their materials also plays a big part. Colourful baskets or simple shelves make it easy for kids to find what they need and tidy up when they’re done. For younger children who can't read yet, adding pictures to the storage bins is a great way to help them learn where everything goes—it’s like giving them a little map to their learning treasures. A simple, gentle routine can also help make the day smoother.
Children thrive when they know what to expect, so sprinkling in learning moments throughout the day—like reading a story after breakfast or doing a fun activity before outdoor play—can give structure without feeling rigid. A visual schedule with drawings can be especially helpful for the little ones, and don’t forget to include breaks for snacks, stretching, or just some quiet time. Learning should never feel like a task. The more hands-on and playful it is, the more children absorb. Think of building blocks for maths, pretend play for language skills, or painting to explore colours and emotions. Everyday moments can become learning adventures—whether it’s counting fruit while setting the table or talking about animal sounds while reading a picture book.
As children grow, they love to feel a sense of control and responsibility. Let them make small decisions, like choosing the book for the day or helping to set up their learning space. When they face challenges, try guiding them with questions instead of giving answers right away—it builds their problem-solving skills and confidence. During focused learning time, it’s helpful to reduce distractions by turning off the TV and putting away devices. A calm and quiet space helps children concentrate better, though soft instrumental music can work well for those who enjoy a little background sound. Most importantly, remind children that learning is not about being perfect, but about trying, exploring, and growing. Celebrate their efforts, whether they finish a tricky puzzle or simply stay focused for a few extra minutes. Your encouragement and curiosity can be the biggest motivation—they learn so much from watching you. When home becomes a nurturing space for learning, filled with patience, play, and praise, children begin to see learning not just as something they do, but as something they love.
At Salwan Junior School, we believe that learning doesn't stop at the classroom door—it continues at home too. That's why we work closely with parents, guiding and encouraging them to build a positive and engaging learning environment for their children. Whether it's helping their child speak confidently on different topics, exploring new stories through reading and storytelling, or recording and sharing those stories on Flipgrid, every activity is a step toward growth. We love seeing children express their creativity through home-made scientific models and art, and we make sure to celebrate their efforts in exhibitions. Most importantly, we cherish the active role our parents play in school events—because when schools and families work together, children truly thrive.

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only once,” said renowned American storyteller George R.R. Martin.
Perhaps, no set of words could have highlighted the importance of reading in a better way. As a kid, when I used to read a short story, it felt that those characters became a part of my life. Reading about those people, their situations, their thoughts and their choices had a deep impact on my personality and shaped my own thought process.
When young minds embrace a book, they enter someone else’s world. They get a first-hand experience of another person’s happiness, sadness, anger, silliness, confusion, excitement and a hundred other feelings. This also helps them decode their own emotions. This develops the power of deep understanding, empathy as well as resilience – qualities that are supremely important in today’s times.
And, of course, the added benefit of developing command over the language is just too important to be dismissed. Though I still feel that reading is more about life than language. It was this understanding that helped me imbibe the love for books in my own kid. It was never about language; it was about the stories that I thought he should experience.
That’s where most parents stumble. They don’t know where to start because either they think they are too late as books don’t hold the child’s interest, or they choose the books that they think would benefit the kids the most in terms of language or academics.
I would suggest that if you really want to develop the habit of reading in your kids, look out for those subjects that interest them and stimulate their minds. If it’s their first book, irrespective of the age of the child, go easy with the text and choose books that are loaded with graphics and pictures. My boy’s first book was a complete picture book with no words that was introduced to him when he was just 10 months old and he has not stopped since.
Start easy, and match pace with your child as they level up. Access the school libraries and make use of the resources if budget is a constraint, though a good book for children may cost just as much as a pizza if you think of it. Someone who can spend more, I highly recommend buying a Kindle device for young readers over buying electronic tablets or gaming consoles. Kindle devices are electronic readers that have an inbuilt dictionary that helps kids understand difficult words as they read without disturbing the flow. This broadens the vocabulary, without the harmful effect of screen and blue light on eyes.
These small but significant steps hold the potential to change the lives of your kids. So please act on them to see the magic unravel itself.

If I had a chance to invent something new that would be very useful for mankind, it would be a flying car. In the past, people travelled only on horseback or on foot. After the car was invented, it changed everything radically. People started to use cars more than any other vehicle. Nowadays, cars are the most common means of transportation. The number of traffic jams and pollution has increased with the great number of cars. So, that is why I would like to invent a flying car.
Firstly, after my invention, it would help to decrease the driver’s stress while driving in traffic jams. Especially during office hours when everyone is in a hurry trying to get to their workplace, when someone has an emergency situation like any accident or someone is sick and rushing to the hospital. At that time flying cars will be beneficial.
Secondly, as a result of this invention, people will not violate the laws and traffic rules because of reasons like narrow streets, crowded places, etc. and pollution will also be largely controlled.
Finally, it would be fun and exciting, as we have often seen in many fiction and Hollywood films about the flying cars. Many people, including elderly and students, will be fascinated by it.
My invention would change a stressful lifestyle, save time for lots of people who waste time on heavy traffic jams and bring an eco-friendly change to the atmosphere. That saved time can be used wisely with friends and family.
