Message from the Leadership Team
Dear Noadswood families,
This week, we were delighted to speak with Year 10 parents and carers about CV writing, mock interviews and work experience. Work experience plays a crucial role in shaping students' futures by providing valuable insights into various industries and professions. It allows students to apply their classroom knowledge in real-world settings, enhancing their skills and boosting their confidence. Thank you to all families for embracing this as it not only enriches students' education but also prepares them for the challenges of the workforce ahead. A huge thank you to Miss Clews and Mr Lewis for all of their hard work in supporting and inspiring our young people, we consider ourselves most fortunate to have dedicated careers staff. In addition, we also spoke to Year 10 students in an assembly about how they can prepare for their mock interview and work experience placement.
Information about this has now been sent out to all Year 10 parents and carers. If you have any questions at all, please contact Gordon Lewis, our Careers Advisor, at glewis@noadswood.hants.sch.uk or Jacey Clews at jclews@noadswood.hants.sch.uk.
Here are the key dates for your diary:
CV and cover letter submission deadline: Friday 20th December 2024
Mock interview evening: Thursday 6th March 2025
Work experience placement form deadline: Friday 21st February 2025
Work experience week: Monday 7th July – Friday 11th July 2025
We talk often about how proud we are of our subject specialisms at Noadswood. Congratulations to our outstanding Geography department, led by Miss Skinner, for successfully hosting the recent Geography network meeting for teachers across Hampshire. This event not only showcased the department's commitment to excellence but has also earned them recognition as a model of best practice in Geography education within Hampshire. The dedication and innovative approaches demonstrated by our Geography team ensure a first-class Geography education for our students.
We’ll write more about this in next week's bulletin, but we've had a wonderful day with Year 7 on their team building day and can't wait to see more of them at our PSA disco tonight!
Finally, as we celebrate Black History Month, we take the opportunity to honor the rich contributions and achievements of Black individuals throughout history. This month serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding our diverse heritage and the ongoing journey toward equality and justice. We encourage our school community to engage in discussions, explore resources, and participate in activities that highlight the impact of Black culture and history in shaping our society. Do visit our library and explore their celebration of Black literature. In addition to this we are delighted to welcome Chris Lubbe to Noadswood on Thursday 17th October to talk to our students. This is your opportunity to listen to someone who witnessed Nelson Mandela in action. It has taken 3 years to arrange Chris' visit. The RE department do not want you to miss out on this opportunity. Everyone Mrs Blowers has spoken to who has heard Chris has said he's BRILLIANT! Thank you to Mrs Blowers for her passion and tenacity in securing this wonderful opportunity for our students. Students can sign up on Arbor if they haven’t done so yet.
We were delighted to welcome families to our Rwanda information evening led so brilliantly by Dr Shaw. We’ll keep our community updated about this unique opportunity.
Best wishes,
Kathryn Marshall and the Leadership Team
Literacy
This week, I’d like to share some research from The Reading Agency.
The wellbeing of our students is always a priority at Noadswood and I believe that wellbeing is often intertwined with learning and self-worth. It’s no surprise then, that reading can have a massively positive impact on the mental health of young people and adults.
• 19% of readers say that reading stops them from feeling lonely. This is backed up by a study analysing social connectedness which found that reading books significantly reduces feelings of loneliness.
• Participation in shared reading groups is linked to enhanced relaxation, calmness, concentration, quality of life, confidence and self-esteem, as well as feelings of shared community and common purpose.
• Higher literacy skills are associated with a range of positive societal benefits, including having a stronger sense of belonging to society and being more likely to trust others.
• Studies have found that reading for pleasure enhances empathy, understanding of the self, and the ability to understand one’s own and others’ identities
Volunteers Required
We are looking for reliable people who may have some spare time on their hands to be part of the Noadswood team and become a volunteer minibus driver. You will need a valid driving licence with D1 ticked as well as a MIDAS certificate, although we can arrange training if you do not have this. A full DBS check will be required which we can arrange.
