Charity Matters Spring/Summer 2024

Welcome to our latest edition of Charity Matters, our update on all things UCLH Charity fundraising. Read all about the difference charitable funds make, and how you can help us do even more to support patients, staff and research at UCLH.

UCLH gardens are in bloom

Thanks to generous donations totalling £125,000 to our gardens appeal, the rooftop gardens at the Grafton Way Building, the staff garden at the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals and the Squire Garden at the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre have all been refreshed and are being looked after by volunteers and a professional gardener. A big tidy up and new perennial and seasonal planting mean that the gardens are providing a haven for patients and staff alike.

New charity hub

If you are going to the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre in the next few weeks, check out the new charity hub! Our specialist cancer funds, the Cancer Fund and Haematology Cancer Care fund will have a permanent hub on the ground floor which will provide charity information and give supporters the opportunity to meet staff to chat about what we do and how you can support our work. We hope to see you there.

Our Gift of Giving appeal

Our annual end of year, Gift of Giving appeal, raised a fantastic £30,000 this year, bringing cheer to UCLH over the festive season.

Thanks to your generosity, every patient in hospital on Christmas Day had a present to open and staff working on shift had a festive lunch to enjoy.

The difference you've made

Charitable donations can help make a difference to patients, staff and research by funding things that the NHS couldn’t otherwise afford. Our new report, The difference you have made - Charitable giving impact January 2022 - December 2023 highlights a number of projects made possible by charitable funds.

Projects in the report include:

The UK’s first clinical research project into long Covid in the UK, leading to a better understanding of the condition, improved diagnostics and new treatments.
The refurbishment of the University College Hospital children and young people’s emergency department. New paint, bespoke wall art and new seating is making the department a more welcoming, age- appropriate space for the thousands of patients who visit each year.
Creation of a new staff room and kitchen on the seventh floor of University College Hospital giving staff respite during busy shifts.
Improved WiFi connectivity in the children’s cancer ward at University College Hospital, giving young patients the ability to connect with friends, family and attend school virtually while undergoing prolonged stays in hospital.
Charitable donations facilitated the purchase of new waiting room chairs and examination couches for the Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit. This equipment has improved the experience for patients and their families.

Thank you to all our supporters

As well as individual donors and grants from trusts and foundations, we’re really fortunate to have support from our corporate partners and local businesses. We’d like to say a very big thank you to the following companies who have helped us to make a difference in the last few months:

Franco Manca

Our local branch of Franco Manca in Tottenham Court Road donated over 60 pizzas each week in September giving different teams across UCLH the opportunity to enjoy a well-deserved team lunch.

Hasbro

Toy company (and local neighbour) Hasbro visited us on their ‘Global Day of Joy’ in December by donating hundreds of gifts for children and young people. The Hasbro team joined the fundraising team to wrap the presents ready for young patients to open on Christmas Day. They also donated gift bags for elderly patients in hospital over Christmas.

Hudsons Property

Hudsons Property organised their own santa run in London’s west end. Founder, Jon Hudson said, “We always support this charity whenever we can. We raised £3,440 for a good cause and created so many happy faces as we dashed through the streets of Marylebone, Fitzrovia, Bloomsbury, Covent Garden and Soho covering around 7K. We will definitely do it again this year.”

Acacium

Acacium helped us to wrap a further 1,000 presents and ensured everyone received a hand written Christmas card to open. The team also joined us at Euston station singing carols raising money for our Gift of Giving appeal.

ARgENTUM

Skincare company ARgENTUM has provided luxury self care for packs for patients staying in the Cotton Rooms, the charityfunded patient hotel. The packs include luxury day and night cream and oil in a beautiful pouch.

Scamp and Dude

The Scamp and Dude super scarves mission has come to UCLH. For every scarf bought, one is donated to someone newly diagnosed with cancer.

Derwent

Thanks to Derwent London for their ongoing support. They are donating £30,000 this year and are supporting us with the costs associated with doing our abseil, watch this space for details.

And finally...

...thank you to the following who helped support our Gift of Giving appeal in 2023 – Amazon Fresh Euston, Arsenal FC, Boconcept, CBRE, Currys, Dyson, Editions, Elemis, Fitzrovia Partnership, Hilton Hotel, Jo Malone, Langham Hotel, Monopoly Lifesize, Morrisons, Nuffield Health, Pro cook, Revcap, Rosa’s Thai, SEFE, Starbucks, Subway, Twist Museum and WH Smith.

Supporter stories

Our supporters raise money for lots of different reasons – some work at UCLH and can see the difference charitable funds make every day, others want to say thank you for the care they or their loved ones have received. Meet Mark, Lynsey and Jack who have taken on challenge events for UCLH Charity in the last year.

Lynsey and Jack

Lynsey Wright and her nephew Jack ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon last October after Lynsey’s dad, and Jack’s grandad was treated at UCLH before sadly passing away last August. Lynsey said, “As a family we couldn’t be more thankful for the specialist care he received from the incredible NHS team at UCLH”.

Having run one half marathon and raising over £2,000 this dynamic duo laced up their trainers again for the London Landmarks Half Marathon. Thank you Lynsey and Jack.

Mark

Mark Spiro raised almost £14,000 by completing the renowned Via Francigena trail, choosing to fundraise for UCLH Charity “which played a vital role in providing exceptional care and resources to my father during his recovery.” Mark completed the incredible journey from Canterbury to Rome, spanning exactly 90 days, clocking up a staggering 1,470,573 steps along mountain paths, mule tracks, rural and secondary roads, cypress-lined dirt roads and among majestic pines.
