Welcome to the July 2024 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.
Nearly ready for departure
During July works at our 33kV primary substation at Stansted airport is nearing completion.
All reinforced concrete works and substation building works are complete, leaving the internal fit out, security door installation and compound fencing works to finish.
In addition to Stansted airport we have several other substation builds in progress. Stanton Cross, Wellingbrough is progressing well with the substation building construction well under way.
Green energy
This month has seen great progress with the infrastructure works for the new Gridserve EV charging hub at Mollies Diner, Bucklands in Oxfordshire where we will be enabling 11 new chargers giving 22 spaces dedicated to electric car charging.
In the big city
During July we commenced works on a scheme in Central London, comprising multiple excavations for a new HV supply to feed The Earls Court Development.
The work consists of Temporary Works Design for deep excavations to allow modifications to the existing DNO Network and access to an underground chamber (to allow core drilling for the new cables to be installed into the primary substation) that will supply the new feed. As you can imagine the ground was heavily congested with existing utilities and our Vacuum Excavator was put to good use once again to safely carry out the excavations.
The new development will deliver around 4,000 new homes (targeting 35% affordable across all tenures). It will also provide 300,000 sq ft of space for retail, dining, leisure and culture. Sustainability underpins the masterplan with a zero carbon energy network and a zero operational carbon target as the basis of the development.
On the National Express
Works continued in July for the new HV supply that will feed the National Express bus depot at Perry Barr, Birmingham. These works will reinforce the existing HV network to enable the depot to install new EV chargers for their new fleet of electric buses.
Lydon Contracting is also completing the onsite infrastructure improvements for the new electric buses. Works include the construction of concrete bases to land EV chargers, concrete plinths for the positioning of HV Transformers, new ducting network (through reinforced concrete) to feed the EV chargers as well as specialist core drilling through high a high-level gantry floor to allow the installation of HV cables.
The Bus depot at Perry Barr is National Express’ flagship bus depot that houses over 170 buses and will be enabled (with our works!) to house a full fleet of electric business on their journey to net zero by 2030.
Flour power
Works are ongoing at Whitworth Bros’ flour millers in Wellingborough where we are carrying out repairs to sections of failed concrete in the HGV service yard.
The works involve cutting and breaking out the failed concrete, resetting manhole covers where necessary, drilling and dowelling into the adjacent concrete and casting new reinforced concrete slabs.
Safety First!
Keep connected while protected!
In the challenging environment of the construction industry, safety is paramount. Noisy environments are a challenge so ensuring we protect and safeguard our workforce is a priority.
Our Topcutter machine is a specialist piece of equipment used when we are installing utility infrastructure in tarmac roads and footways due to their ability to cut a clean, accurate trench. As with any method of excavation communication is key, however given the noisy environment this can make the process challenging. At Lydon Contracting we have recognised this and have eradicated the issue by using 3M T Peltor ALERT X Headsets. The ambient / environmental microphones increase the ability of the Banksman and Driver to communicate efficiently and hear warning signals, approaching vehicles and other machine sounds or processes when needed.
The headsets with noise-cancelling boom microphone connect to your mobile phone for hands free calls and streaming in noisy environments. The headset has a level-dependent function for ambient listening, syncing to a mobile app so users can easily set-up and adjust the headset to suit the surroundings.

Tell us about yourself, what do you like doing in your spare time?
When I am not working I like spending time with my family. Especially the 3 granddaughters who are 4, 2 and 12 weeks old. They certainly keeps us busy!
We love spending the weekends watching my youngest daughter Sky Diving at Hinton Skydiving Centre in Brackley.
And when the weather prevails, we have a lovely dog who we enjoy getting out for long walks with.
