Colmore Junior School Spring term week: 19

Highlights of the week

It has been another action-packed week at Colmore, filled with musical achievements, active learning, and wonderful opportunities for parental engagement.

Maths INSPIRE Workshops

It has been a real pleasure to welcome so many of you into school this week for our Maths INSPIRE workshops. Seeing the children proudly share their mathematical thinking with you is a highlight for our staff. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the parents and carers of 5BM, 5V, 3P, 3C, 3O, 3A, and 3P for such a fantastic turnout and for engaging so enthusiastically with the activities. Your support truly enhances the children’s confidence in the subject.

Musical Excellence: Birmingham Conservatoire

On Monday, our school choir delivered a truly exceptional performance at the Birmingham Conservatoire. They were invited to take part in a final-year student’s project, led by a talented soprano singer. Our pupils had the unique opportunity to perform alongside a professional community choir, showcasing their vocal talent in a world-class venue. It was a proud moment for Colmore, and the children represented the school with grace and musicality.

Whole School Assembly: The Importance of Being Active

Monday’s assembly took an energetic turn, led by our PE Lead, Mrs. Arnold. The focus was on the vital importance of staying active for both our physical and mental well-being. Mrs. Arnold didn’t just talk about exercise—she got the entire school up on their feet! The children (and staff!) took part in a coordination challenge that certainly woke up our brains and bodies for the week ahead.

Oracy: Family Discussion Question

As part of our ongoing work to develop the children’s oracy and critical thinking skills, we encourage you to discuss the following "big question" at home this week:

"Can we have happiness without sadness? What is true happiness?"

There are no right or wrong answers, but these discussions are a wonderful way for children to practice articulating their thoughts and listening to different perspectives. We wish you all a lovely, restful weekend. Jon Gale Head Teacher

5B have been taking part in a lantern building workshop. They are creating frame structures which will then have a tissue paper covering ready to share at Lantern Fest in Cannon Hill Park.

In D and T, Year 5 have been practising their sewing skills. They used cross stitch and running stitch to join together a simple felt purse. Next week they will be designing their own creations ready to make.

Year 6 have been finding out all about refraction. They studied the way in which a pencil appears in a glass of water and how the light is refracted, tricking the eye.

Upper school received a visit from the author Caryl Lewis on Wednesday. She told the children all about her new book and how she first became an author. It was a fantastic event organised once again through the wonderful Kings Heath independent bookshop, How Brave is the Wren.
In 5BMs French lesson they carried out a survey in French about their favourite fruits? Quel est ton fruit preferre?

Upper school choir had an incredible experience on Monday. They had been invited to take part in a final year conservatoire student’s major project. The children sang alongside a community choir and the student soprano. If really was an incredible opportunity.

4RK have been working on their photo editing skills and used them all this week to create some funny animal postcards!
3A started to use yes and no questions to explore branching databases in computing this week

Year 3 have been tasting a range of vegetables this week and deciding on which are their favourite flavours.

The newsletters are also accessible on the news section of our school website.
