Mixing Magicians! Week 4

This week, Year 1 have been exploring the wonderful world of colour mixing! We started by learning about the three primary colours: red, blue, and yellow. The children experimented with different ways of mixing these to create secondary colours using paint, oil pastels, and colouring pencils.

We then used our colour-mixing knowledge for a very special project. As part of our History lessons on Bessie Coleman, we discussed the importance of celebrating all skin tones and how it doesn’t matter what colour our skin is - we are all unique and special. The children carefully mixed the primary colours together to create their own skin tone, thinking about the different shades and tones they could see. Once they had found the perfect match, they used their colour to paint their own unique handprint - a wonderful reminder of our individuality and diversity.

To finish the week, we applied our colour-mixing skills to observational paintings of Bessie Coleman in our sketchbooks. The children worked carefully to capture her likeness and celebrate her incredible achievements.

Well done Year 1 for a fantastic week of colour mixing!
