Following their interests. Nursery, Spring Term, week 10

Sometimes, for reasons only known to the children, an interest develops and starts a craze. This week's craze was tower building. There was excellent spontaneous use of vocabulary such as 'tallest' and 'balance'.
It's not just towers we have been building, its patterns and shapes too.
Our guided maths groups have been practising using the numbers 1, 2 and 3 in games.
We've been having a go at identifying numbers and making marks to represent amounts. Sometimes this is through a group activity and sometimes the children choose to practise this while they play.
The children love mark making in different ways outside, using chalk, paint or even water.
Mark making is the very beginning of learning how to write letters and words. We can make marks with paint, in play dough, or in many different ways with pen and pencil.
Reading this week for the children has been listening to stories for pleasure and practicing the skill of blending sounds in words (e.g b-u-s is bus).
