We traveled to Lafayette, Louisiana in the heart of Cajun Country to explore and photograph the Bald Cypress Swamps. Flat bottom boats with swivel chairs took us right through the bayous giving us close access to birds, alligators and a fascinating ecosystem loaded with Spanish Moss.
In spring wildlife is in peak breeding plumage in Southern Louisiana. The Great Egrets and Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were displaying and following each other around in pairs.
The swamps we visit have a mixture of Bald Cypress and Tupelo trees. These moss-covered behemoths are prefect subjects for dramatic landscapes. They also make terrific nesting spots for a variety of birds. We saw nesting Osprey, Anhingas, Great Egrets and Whistling Ducks while exploring the area.
We visit two different rookeries during this workshop. The workshop is timed so our group can photograph waders taking care of their young chicks. The Great Egret chicks put on a great display for us, fighting amongst themselves and eating whatever the adults bring back for them.
Photographing birds in flight is a skill we practiced at a second rookery. With open skies and an abundance of Roseate Spoonbills, our group was motivated to shoot thousands of frames perfecting this technique.
With mostly overcast skies this year, we welcomed a break in the clouds right at sunset during one of our evening photo shoots. The serenity and abundance of life in the bayous keeps us coming back year after year.
Thanks to all the photographers who joined us in the Louisiana Bayous this year. Big thanks to Bryan Champagne for his expert guidance and boat skills.
