Year 4 Feature

4K students are proving themselves to be talented artists! Their creativeness is showcased in their vibrant colour selection for their 'Name in a Fish' and 'All About Me Backpack'. We also explored the significance of 'Songlines' in Indigenous culture and created stunning dot painting style artworks. 4K are also keenly preparing for Harmony Week by creating orange toned flowers for a class wall display and reflecting on the meaning of 'harmony' as they colour in a globe, decorate eight hearts, and write words that represent harmony for them.

In 4R we are experimenting with coutour lines to create a variety of visual styles that engage the audience, whilst looking at colour and design.

Prime Minister’s speech writer visits 4S!

Did you know that the Prime Minister often gets help to write his speeches? Gus a fellow student in our class, his mum Annie was the assistant when Kevin Rudd wrote the ‘Sorry Day’ Speech in 2008. She told us that the Prime Minister took years to write and finish this important historical speech. People came from all over Australia to witness the event. Kevin Rudd and Annie visited many communities across Australia to get an understating of what it felt like to be part of the Stolen Generation. They used this information to help write and present this speech.

Annie told us that she was constantly reminding him to finish the speech and she would often ask people to leave the Prime Minister alone so he could work. Annie shared what an emotional and time-consuming process it was for Kevin Rudd to write the speech.

In our History lessons, we have been learning about the Stolen Generation and how heart breaking that was for the Aboriginal people. To hear Annie’s story and the role that she played in history was inspiring.

On behalf of 4S we would like to thank Annie for sharing her story.

This report was written by Charlie I, Luna A, Oliver C and Josh O

4S have also been very busy learning different artistic forms to create some beautiful masterpieces. We have taken inspiration from the text, ‘The Thing about Oliver’ to create a hibiscus flower with shading and a display of a school of fish.

RELIEVING PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Another action-packed fortnight of learning at Byron Bay Public School!

NAPLAN

Our Year 3 and 5 students recently completed the NAPLAN assessments, guided expertly by Ms Lennon and Mrs Whitney. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped organise and support this important process.

K-2 Reading Parent and Carers Workshop

Last week, we hosted a well-attended parent home reading workshop led by Ms Ashley Perusco and Mrs Kelli Stevens. They shared valuable insights on the Science of Reading, explaining how it aligns with our school’s explicit teaching model and the new English Syllabus. The workshop included practical demonstrations and strategies for fitting reading into your family's busy schedule. Participants engaged in meaningful discussions about the benefits of reading regularly with children and its significance for their long-term literacy development. We truly appreciate everyone who attended; your presence and thoughtful questions made the event a success!

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Thank you for your positive participation and feedback during our parent-teacher interviews. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity to learn more about your child's education and enable teachers to gain insights from you, their child's first teacher. We believe that learning is a collaborative effort, with each of us playing a crucial role. If you'd like to speak with your child's teacher at any time, please feel free to make an appointment through the front office.

As we strive to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all our students at Byron Bay Public School, we want to highlight the importance of clear communication regarding your child's morning and end-of-day arrangements.

When children are aware of their plans for drop-off and pick-up, it helps them feel secure and allows them to focus on their learning. We understand that last minute changes to routine can happen and are happy to accommodate this. As much as possible however, please take a moment each morning to discuss your child's arrangements for the day. We would appreciate if you could please communicate any changes to student routines before 2:30pm by phoning the office.

Our office often receives up to 50 messages each day regarding pick-up arrangements. While we are more than happy to relay these messages, having the plan communicated directly with your child where possible, helps us manage our communications more efficiently.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in fostering clear communication with your child. Together, we can create a positive and organised environment for every student at our school.

Thursday Playgroup

Our 9:20am Thursday morning Playgroup held in the school hall continues to be a wonderful success! It’s heartwarming to see so many families come together to create a vibrant community. Parents and caregivers enjoy connecting, while their little ones engage in fun and educational activities. Each session is filled with laughter, creativity, and an opportunity for children to learn through play. We encourage more families to join us for this joyful gathering, where friendships are formed, and everyone can share in the excitement of early learning.

Community Focus Groups

At Byron Bay Public School, we are committed to ongoing improvement in our practices. Enhancing student learning and wellbeing is a collective effort that requires continuous reflection. We invite you to share your thoughts and insights by joining one of our focus groups. Your contributions are invaluable as we strive to create the best possible environment for our students.

What do you need to do?

Should you wish to be involved, you will be asked to complete a short group interview, with 6 - 8 other community members for approximately 45 minutes. You will also participate in a second Focus Group, asking the same questions, later in the year, so we can compare responses and measure improvements. Participation is voluntary, with places limited. You can withdraw from the focus group at any time or choose not to participate. The focus groups will be conducted at the school by Mel Morris, Relieving Principal and Ms Ashley Perusco, Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction.

Where and When?

Please choose one of the following sessions should you wish to be involved. This can be communicated by phoning the front office on 6685 6557.

  • Wednesday 2 April | 9:30am - 10:30am
  • Tuesday 8 April | 4:30pm - 5:30pm

What will happen to the information I share?

The interviews will be voice recorded (no video) and responses will be typed up with anonymity – you will not be identified. The recording will be deleted once the interview notes have been transcribed. Information will only be used for the purpose of school planning and reporting. Your responses will be kept strictly confidential and will only be accessed by members of the executive team. They will not be provided to anyone else.

How will the research be published or shared?

The findings of this research may be published or presented to the P&C Association and in our Annual School Report. In any sharing of the information, you will not be identified.

Where can you get more information?

If you would like more information about this project or if you have any issues related to the project, please contact: Mel Morris, Relieving Principal, Byron Bay Public School

The P&C AGM was held last Thursday 20 March and was well attended. Thank you to outgoing committee members for their hard work and dedication (mixed with lots of fun!) during 2024.
