Women's Swimming & Diving Completes Undefeated Dual Meet Schedule as Mules Down Cardinals

Taking on Wesleyan University in the final dual match of the season, the 21st-ranked women's team took care of business 227-111 to finish the regular season a perfect 7-0. The men's team followed suit, defeating the Cardinals 204-113.

The women's team had event winners in 14 of the 18 events, led by Tahlia Crowley and Lexi Asch who won three events apiece. Colby collected podium sweeps in six events.

The men's team had event winners in 12 of the 18 events, led by Brandon Xiong, Spencer Cohen, and Ivan Knoepflmacher who won two events apiece. Colby collected podium sweeps in three events.

Colby celebrated the careers of eight seniors for Senior Day before and after the meet.

The Mules will take on Bates and Bowdoin next weekend for the annual CBB before setting their sights on postseason competition.

Men’s Basketball Grabs a Pair of Victories Topping Husson and Bowdoin

The Men's Basketball team closed out their non-conference schedule with a midweek victory over Husson and moved to 3-1 in NESCAC play with a 70-57 win over Bowdoin on Saturday.

Tuesday evening Colby shot lights out in Bangor to cruise past the Eagles 97-81. The Mules were propelled by a balanced offensive attack, led by Jack Lawson’s 20 points and Marcos Montiel’s 19. Colby dominated early, putting up 45 points in the first half and maintained control in the second despite a strong 51-point effort from Husson after the break. The Mules knocked down an impressive 15 three-pointers in the contest.

On Saturday Colby used a strong second half to secure a 70-57 victory over rival Bowdoin. Leading the way for the Mules was Savion Stroud, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Montiel added 18 points and nine boards. The second half saw Colby pull away, shooting 44.8% from the field while holding the Polar Bears to a mere 26.8%. In the win, Max Poulton joined Colby’s prestigious 1,000 point club just two-thirds of the way through his junior season.

The 12-6 Mules (ranked third in NESCAC) will play hosts to Amherst and Hamilton this coming weekend.

Men's Ice Hockey Splits the Weekend, Remains in Third

With a 3-0 defeat of Williams and a 6-4 setback against Middlebury, Colby's Men's Ice Hockey team split the weekend to remain in third place in the conference standings.

Jake MacDonald opened Friday night's matchup with the Ephs with a goal 20 seconds into play and the Mules never looked back. Scoring tallies by Massimo Gentile and Matthew MacDonald padded the lead as Cooper Rautenstrauch recorded his first career shutout in net with 27 saves.

Saturday's showdown with Middlebury was action-packed from start to finish as the two teams combined for 10 goals. Tallying four goals apiece through the first two periods, the Panthers broke the tie in the third and held on for the victory. Connor Gallagher assisted on Colby's opening goal and netted the fourth score himself to give the junior defenseman 13 points on the season.

Colby will take its 10-5-2 record into Saturday night's showdown with Bowdoin in Brunswick. The Mules won the series opener in November, 5-1.

Women’s Basketball Controls Thomas, Falls Short to Undefeated Bowdoin

Riding a five-game win streak entering the week, the Mules faced Thomas College Tuesday to close out their non-conference schedule before hitting the road Saturday to face the Polar Bears.

The Mules overwhelmed Thomas 92-29 in a dominant performance Tuesday night shooting an impressive 61.9% from the field, including 11 of 12 from beyond the arc. Colby was led by Caroline Hartley’s 19-point, 11-rebound double-double while playing all 40 minutes. The Mules also controlled the boards, grabbing 40 rebounds to Thomas’ 26, and capitalized on 18 turnovers. Colby’s bench contributed 30 points, ensuring the blowout victory and extending their win streak to six games.

In Brunswick on Saturday, the Mules' strong second-half effort fell just short in a 61-56 loss to the fifth-ranked Bowdoin squad. Despite a team-high 15 points from Lydia Mordarski, the Polar Bears held a steady lead throughout the game, as Colby stayed within striking distance but were never able to take control.

With only conference games remaining, the 9-8 Mules (ranked fourth in NESCAC) will head to Amherst and Hamilton this weekend.

Busky Stellar in Net, Women's Ice Hockey Ties Williams 0-0

Facing off in Williamstown, the Mules and the Ephs battled through a pair of even-matched games this weekend.

In Friday's opener, Williams and Colby skated through two periods scoreless before the hosts netted two goals early in the final frame. The Mules tallied back with less than a minute to play when Maria Pierce received a feed from Anna Staton and Georgia Pettygrove, but time ran out on Colby to award Williams a 2-1 victory.

In Saturday's game Mandy Busky (headline photo) was remarkable in net, collecting a career-high 39 saves through three scoreless periods as well as a scoreless overtime frame. Despite Williams winning the shootout 1-0, the match officially goes down as a tie, improving Busky's record to 4-0-2 as the senior collected her 10th career shutout.

Colby will take its 9-4-2 record into a two-game set against Trinity this coming weekend. The two teams faced off in December for a non-conference matchup with the Mules pulling away late in the third period for a 3-2 win.

Lee & Kugan Represent Colby at CSA Individual’s, Team Hosts Wesleyan

Inwoo Lee and Laavanya Kugan headed to New York City this Saturday to compete against the best-of-the-best in this year's CSA Individual Championships.

Battling for the Women’s Ramsey Cup and making her CSA Individual’s debut, Kugan fell in the round of 32 to a strong opponent from Trinity before coming up just short in the consolation bracket against her matchup from Princeton.

In his second straight CSA Individual tournament, Lee grabbed a consolation victory in the Pool Trophy bracket over his opponent from Princeton in a five-set thriller before being knocked out of the tournament.

Back on Mayflower Hill, the men's team swept Wesleyan with ease 9-0 while the women's team fell 8-1. Abhisheka David won in the first spot for the women with a 3-0 sweep, while India Spencer, Amanda Miller, and Tori Thill all took their matches to five sets. On the men's side the Mules only lost three games of the 30 total played.

The Colby Squash teams have a busy road week ahead of them facing Conn., Tufts and Amherst within a four-day stretch.

Track Splits for Husky Invitational and Middlebury’s Small College Invite

With the distance runners headed to Gorham Saturday, the rest of the Colby Track and Field team traveled to the Track at New Balance in Boston on Sunday.

At the Husky Invitational, both the men’s and women’s teams swept the podium in the 1000m run (Ciaran Groom, Kevin Gustafson, Stephen White for the men, Claire Beebe, Noe Nalavala, Bridget Meehan for the women). In the 600m run, Maddie Bush claimed victory while Thomas Speltz tallied a fourth place finish on the men's side. Despite the limited events that the Mules competed in, the women finished sixth out of 13 teams white the men landed in seventh out of 11.

At the Small College Invite, which was an individually scored event, the Mules had plenty of top-10 results against their fellow NESCAC competitors highlighted by Fiona Mejico and Ren Zanze’s wins in the 400m dash.

Next up, the distance runners will host the Colby Mini Meet on Wednesday followed by the whole team heading to the Terrier Classic on Friday at Boston University.
