Student Spotlight: Jessica Ennis

Jessica Ennis is a redshirt senior on UAB Beach Volleyball and has spent all four seasons with the Blazers. This season she entered the top 10 for most wins by a UAB Beach Volleyball player, and looks to continue rising in the ranks! Catch her and the rest of UAB Beach Volleyball in action at Blazer Beach on April 13th & 14th at the Blazer Beach Bash.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada which is where my parents still live. My parents are Martin and Estelle Ennis, and I have a younger brother Aiden. Both my parents have always played many sports while I was growing up, including volleyball. So, from the age of 11, I started playing indoor volleyball. I played club indoor, and I would casually play some beach volleyball in the summers. When I was 16, I decided to try out for Team Ontario Beach Volleyball and when I made that, that is when I fell in love with beach and started playing it more competitively.

Why did you choose to attend UAB?

I chose to attend UAB because of the culture on the team here and all the support that is provided for our athletes. UAB is also known for being a good school academically and that was really important to me. Over my years here the culture on our team has continued to elevate and I am so grateful to be on a team with such supportive and empowering women.

What is the best part about being a student-athlete?

The best part about being a student-athlete is the community that comes with it. You are automatically surrounded by so many like-minded people that all have similar goals to you. Another amazing part is getting to travel to so many different places and schools to compete at the highest level. For beach volleyball, it’s also truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play beach volleyball with a full team (not just you and a partner) and the environment is unmatched.

What has been your favorite moment this season?

My favorite moment so far this season has been playing at home. Playing on Blazer Beach surrounded by all our family, friends, support staff, and fans is truly the best feeling. Being able to make everyone who supports us proud, and show them our team culture, is so fulfilling.

A special message to Blazer Booster members:

Thank you so much for every contribution you make to our team and athletics. It truly gives us the ability to have the best experience possible and being a student-athlete at UAB has been the experience of a lifetime. It has truly been so transformative, and I am grateful to be here and have these opportunities every day. Thank you!

Extra Benefits

Per NCAA Bylaw 16.02.3, an extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution's athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution's students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., international students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.
