DESIGN RATIONALE

A fictitious band named The Two Minute Spins, being of the indie genre connecting to a target audience of young adults and students involved in music culture, was created in order to explore how visual storytelling can be used to both communicate emotion and band/brand identity through visual design.

By granting myself complete artistic freedom in stylistic choices, I will be able to understand how design elements (colour, texture, typography) combined with imagery through photography, can allow the viewer to paint a picture of the emotion and personality of the fictitious band. Through mediums such as posters, album coves, merchandise, social media presence, etc., I will be able to build knowledge and explore how cohesive and unified brand visuals can build narrative, allowing for the viewer to form emotion onto the band.

CONCEPT

The concept of this project is to place myself as the graphic designer for a fictional band called The Two Minute Spins, giving myself complete control over the formulation of their brand image, style imagery etc. With the outcome of the project being to create all forms of media surrounding the band such as posters, album covers, merchandise etc, allowing myself to experience what being the lead designer for a real world task would undertake and gain a better understanding for an area in which I have great interest in.

MOODBOARD

Music posters such as these were incredible inspiration to create artwork and designs for a band in which I have total creative control. This will allow me to express myself while also gaining skills, and learning what works in the area.

PROJECT STATEMENT

Created in this project is a fictional new and upcoming indie band, The Two Minute Spins, focusing on a target audience of young adults and university / high school students immersed in music culture. The creation of the band is used as a tool to explore the visual storytelling of a band, allowing the media surrounding the fictional band to be used as a medium to create personality, emotions and culture, through visuals alone.

As well as this, exploring the design choices and styles bands utilise in the current day and age, allows me to build real world skills in music brand creation, allowing me to both gain skills to be utilised in the field, while also testing my coherence and adaptability through stylistic choices. This discovery and understanding will be brought upon through the mediums of photography, album covers, posters, band caps, tote bags etc., allowing for a refinement of design skills that real world professionals would also have to create.

The outcome of the project will be a coherent, unified band brand identity, having the designs illustrate the bands personality and perceived emotion of their music through visual designs.

The project will be completed through following the tasks I have set myself in the project timeline throughout the weeks. The aim of the timeline is to both allocate myself enough time to put in the greatest amount of work to achieve a successful outcome while also allowing time focused on other subjects and areas in my life.

Even with designated weeks put aside for specific objectives in the timeline, some concerns arise as to the success of the final outcome of the project. Being that a multitude of the outcomes of the project demand for a physical product to be produced by the final presentation day, problems arise as to whether or not the outcomes will actually be fabricated and visualised. Being that these merchandise designs are of paramount importance to the outcome of the project, not only for creating a more complete end product but also as to gain knowledge and real world experience in the process of getting merchandise such as these created. To solve this possible problem, significant research will be undertaken early on in the project such as getting materials primed and print ready, researching gatefold vinyl cover printing, sourcing and printing on tote bags, etc. This step in the process would start as early as week 10 and week 11 as to be sure that the project is to be completed to the best of my ability.
