What is a Drone?
A drone, in technological terms, is an unmanned aircraft. Or more specifically a flying robot that can be remotely controlled or fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans programmed into an onboard computer, sensors and GPS.
History of Drones
- 1849 - Appeared in the form of unmanned balloons used by Austria to attack Venice
- 1907 - Jacques and Louis Bréguet, and Charles Richet developed the concept of a quadcopter
- 1916 - The first pilotless military drone named Ruston Proctor Aerial Target used a radio guidance system
- 1937 - U.S. Navy developed a radio-controlled aircraft, the Curtiss N2C-2 Drone
- 1930's - The Radioplane OQ-2, a remote-controlled model was the first mass-produced UAV product in the U.S.
- 1950's - This Vietnam War saw the first widespread use of drones as dedicated reconnaissance UAVs.
- 1960's - Advanced transistor technology reduced the size and cost of components making RC Planes accessible to civilians
- 1980 to 1989 - The U.S. also began the Pioneer UAV Program led to the development of the RQ2 Pioneer – a medium-sized reconnaissance aircraft.
- 1990 - Mini and micro versions of UAVs were introduced
- 2000 - The famous Predator drone was introduced
- 2006 - The FAA officially issued the first commercial drone permit
- 2010's - Many new uses were proposed for drones, including their use as delivery vehicles
- 2015 - 1000 commercial drone permits issued
The Future of Drones
CNBC International notes that drones are expected to grow into a $100 billion industry.
DIY Drone & Safe Flying
Drone Careers
Flying Drones
Naturally, the first drone-related job that is likely to enter your thoughts is that of flying them. In an industrial/commercial setting however, it’s not so simple as picking up the controls and taking flight. Depending on where you are working, you’ll need a license or certification. In the US you’ll need a Part 107 Remote Pilot in Command Certificate with sUAS Rating and will require a thorough understanding of FAA rules.
Keep in mind being a drone pilot isn't only about flying. You’ll also need to consider the type of job the drone will be tasked with. Meaning you will need additional distinct skills and knowledge that apply to the task.
A few jobs drones may be used for are:
- Aerial photography
- Surveying
- Monitoring
- Inspecting
- Delivering

Building & Developing Drones
Most drone careers will fall into the building and development of drones. These require a variety of skill sets including aeronautics, robotics, software development, AI and mechanical engineering.
A Few Good Careers
Software Engineers- are in high demand as manufacturers and software developers need software engineers for research and development departments.
Hardware Engineers- manufacturers are in need of hardware engineers which includes electrical , mechanical, and aeronautical engineers to help them make their drones lighter, faster, and more durable.
Sales & Marketing- manufacturers recruit sales and marketing professionals to help them capture as much market share as possible.
Operations- offers plenty of job opportunities such as technicians, inspectors, and warehouse staff.
Management- drone companies require management professionals like project managers and business intelligence analysts.
