Our Vision, Values and Motto

Our Vision = We aim to provide an inclusive and nurturing environment where everyone can learn and grow.   Our Values = Respect, Inclusion, Nurture   Motto = ‘I will go anywhere, provided it be forward’.  (Dr David Livingstone)

Message from the headteacher

It’s hard to believe that we are almost at the end of another session.  At the end of June, we will be saying goodbye to a number of temporary staff in our school: Miss MacDonald (P4/5 teacher), Mr McInally (P5 teacher) and Miss Fleming (P7 teacher).  We have still not been allocated staff to replace these teachers.  As a result, we are not yet in a position to let you know your child’s new class and class teacher for 2026/2027, but we will share this information with you as soon as we can.  Unfortunately, we will also be bidding farewell to Mrs Hood (Team Leader in our school office) who has secured another job outwith education.  On behalf of everyone associated with DLMPS, I would like to thank all of these staff for all that they have done to support our school and our community.  We will miss you all!   Please remember that the school is here to support you and your family at all times.  If there is anything personal that you would like to discuss relating to your family, please either phone the school or send me an email at the following address and I will do my best to help:  gw14dlmpsht@glow.sch.uk   Linda Callender Head Teacher

Scottish Swimming Championships

Congratulations to Emma Thompson (P6), Leila Young (P6), Milly Innes (P6) and Pippa Forsyth (P6) who have qualified for both the 4 x 50m freestyle relay and the 4 x 50m medley relay at the Scottish Schools Swimming Team Championships taking place at Aberdeen Sports Village on Thursday, 4th June.  Emma will also be competing in the individual 50m breaststroke race.  Good luck girls!  What an amazing achievement for our school!

Primary Dance Festival

Congratulations to all our P6-7 pupils who represented our school at the Primary Dance Festival held in the Town House in Hamilton on Wednesday, 6th May.  You were all absolutely fantastic!

P5 Bikeability

Congratulations to all our P5 children who recently completed their Level 1 Bikeability Award.  This course is designed to support children to understand how to cycle responsibly and safely.  Thank you to Mrs Stevenson (P4 teacher) who trained the children for this award.

Reading School 'staying shiny award'

Our school was recently awarded a second Gold Reading Schools Award.  This ‘Staying Shiny’ award is in recognition of all that we do to support a culture or reading in our school.  Only 24 other schools across Scotland have achieved this prestigious status, so we are all very proud of our success.  Thank you to Mr Burns, Acting Principal Teacher, who coordinated the submission of evidence for our school.

'hear our voice' attachment network event

Congratulations to Theia Tolmie (P7) and Rebekah Whyte (P7) who represented our school at SLC’s recent Attachment Network Event, showcasing what we do as a school to promote positive relationships and attachment.  The girls were accompanied by Mrs Burns (one of our nurture practitioners) and received many positive comments on what has become our day-to-day practice at DLMPS.

reading schools showcase

Well done to Lola Murray, Madeleine Roper and Finn Roberston, 3 of our P6 pupils, who represented DLMPS at Reading Schools showcase event that was held at Townhill PS in Hamilton on Wednesday, 26th May.  As well as finding out more about Townhill’s Reading Schools journey, the children also got lots of ideas on how we might use loose parts to support active learning in Literacy next session

P1 Inductions

It was lovely to have our new P1 children and their parents/carers in school on 21st and 28th May.  We now cannot wait to see them again in August.  Our curent P6 children also did a great job acting as buddies, supporting the younger children to settle on the days of their visits.

Nursery Children

A lot of our nursery chilNurdren will soon be making the transition into P1.  We have loved getting to know all of them, watching them grow in confidence day by day.  We now wish them all ‘good luck’ as they move on to the next stage in their educational journey and would like to thank all of their parents/carers and other family members for being so supportive of our nursery over the past 2 years.

P7 Transition

Our P7 children recently spent 2 successful days at Calderside Academy on 19th and 20th May.  As part of these visits, children got to experience a range of different subjects, helping to smooth their transition into S1 in August. As these children prepare to move on to secondary school, I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the very best for the future and to thank them for everything that they have contributed to DLMPS in the time that they have been with us.  We will be sad to see them go, but we hope that they continue to try their very best in everything that they do so that they can follow their hopes and their dreams at high school.  Thank you, too, to all the respective parents/carers for all the support that you have given the school over the years

School uniform

A few parents have been in touch regarding the supply of our school uniform.  If you wish to have the school badge on your child’s clothing, this is available to order online from Scotcrest in Hamilton (www.Scotcrest.co.uk).  However, please remember that this is not a mandatory requirement and many supermarkets also sell items of clothing in our school colours at a cheaper cost.  In addition, please also bear in mind that we also have a recycling rail containing lots of new and nearly new clothing that is available free of charge outside our main office.

false nails and make-up in school

Please remember that false nail extensions are unacceptable for school as they restrict the things that the child can do in class and they could cause injury to either the child or someone else if they inadvertently bump into them.  Make-up is not permitted in school either, unless it is for a special event, such as a class party.  Your support with this is greatly appreciated

pupil absence

Please note that it is the parent/carer’s responsibility to notify the school or nursery if their child is going to be absent before 9.10am.  If we do not receive either a letter or a phone call from a parent/carer, we will try to phone home and, if unsuccessful, we will then phone your child’s emergency contacts, then possibly the Police.  It is, therefore, vitally important that you notify us of any changes to your contact details as soon as possible.  It is also important that you let us know the reason for your child’s absence, since this will let us know what code to record on the register for them

Sun Safety

Now that the warmer weather is here, we strongly encourage all parents/carers to ensure that their child is protected by suncream before coming to school in the mornings and that he/she also wears a sun hat/cap.  Please also ensure that your child brings a water bottle to school every day so that they can remain hydrated.  If you have difficulty providing a water bottle, please contact the school office to let us know and we will try our best to help.

Timekeeping

Unfortunately, a number of children repeatedly arrive late for school.  This can then cause disruption in class as teachers may need to go back over something that a child has missed.  It also causes a lot of embarrassment for your child.  Please remember that our school starts at 8.55am so please support your child to be on time every day.  Thank you.   Did you know…..?

  • A child who arrives 15 minutes late every day misses out on 50 hours of learning over the course of a year!

The Scottish Government and Education Scotland are aiming for 95.0% attendance for all children at school. Last session, the average attendance for DLMPS was 93.72%. Our weekly attendance rates so far for the month of February were as follows

Please support us in trying to increase our attendance to within national expectations.  Our attendance took a dip last month, so your support in helping to improve this is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.   Did you know…..?

  • 96% attendance = 7-8 days of lost learning
  • 95% attendance = 2 weeks of lost learning
  • 93% attendance = 3 weeks of lost learning
  • 90% attendance = 1 month of lost learning
  • 80% attendance = 2 months of lost learning

  • Children who have an average of 90% attendance every year will have lost the equivalent of 1 year of schooling by the time they are in S3.

Sports Day

Thank you to all our parents/carers and other family members who attended our Sprots Day on Wednesday, 27th May.  Thankfully the weather stayed dry for all of us.  Thank you, too, to our Parent Council who provided water and crisps for all the children after they had finished their potted sports.

Loose parts

Thank you to all our parents/carers who have engaged in loose parts play alongside their child.  Please note that these sessions take place regardless of the weather, so please ensure that your child comes dressed appropriately with a warm, waterproof jacket or sunscreen and a hat if it is hot.  Dates for the final set of these sessions are also shown in the Diary Dates section of this newsletter.

Family Holidays

In line with South Lanarkshire Council policy, the school implements a Maximising Attendance policy and holiday absences will normally be recorded as unauthorised.  I would, therefore, request that holidays are taken outwith term time to allow your child to benefit fully from the learning experiences that are planned in school.  Please note that class teachers are unable to provide additional work for your child if he/she is on holiday

Textile Recycling Bin

Our Parent Council were successful in acquiring a textile recycling bin to help support sustainability, as well as raise funds for the school.  This bin is located in the Coatshill Avenue car park across the road from the school and it will take donations of wearable clothes, paired shoes and bags.  It is estimated that a full bin can raise up to £400, so any donations that you have will be gratefully received.

Parentsportal

Please could we remind all parents/carers to regularly log on to Parentsportal as this is now our sole means of communication.  This helps us to become more eco-friendly as it reduces the number of letters that we need to send home, including permission forms for any outings.  It also allows you to access and update details on your child at any time.

Mobile Phones

We strongly discourage children from bringing their mobile phones to school as we cannot be held responsible if they are damaged or stolen.  If your child does bring his/her mobile phone to school, it must be switched off at all times whilst in the building and in the playground.  Any messages that you need to get to your child during the school day should be delivered via staff in our school office.

Instagram

The school has moved away from X (formerly known as Twitter) as a means of communication.  Our new social media platform is Instagram @DLMPS2025.  Please note that this is a closed and private group with only current parents/carers and staff permitted to follow.  We use this platform to share achievements and pictures of what is going on in the school and in your child’s class.  No pictures of children will be posted until we have permission consented via Parentsportal.  If you require support to join Instagram, please contact Miss Lattimer, one of our DHTs, (gw07lattimerjennifer@glow.sch.uk).  Thank you.

Water in Class

Children are encouraged to sip plain water in class as research has shown that this increases their concentration when learning.  This should be in a plastic sports bottle to avoid spillage.  Please note that juice and flavoured/sparkling water are not permitted in the classrooms as they leave a terribly sticky mess if they are spilled and may spoil someone’s work.  Children who do bring this into school will be asked to leave their bottle in their schoolbag until the next break time.    Water is also served at lunchtime and children may also bring in a second bottle of water on P.E. days if they wish.

Sanitary Products

The Scottish Government is keen to ensure that sanitary products are freely accessible to all who need them.  Our older girls know where they can be accessed in the school without causing any unnecessary embarrassment.

Nursery graduation

Our Nursery Graduation will take place on Thursday, 11th June at 2.00pm.  Parents/carers and other family members of the children involved are warmly invited to attend.

P7 Leavers

Our P7 Record of Achievement Assembly will take place on Friday, 12th June at 1.30pm and all parents/carers and other family members of the children involved are warmly invited to attend.

Our P7 Leavers’ Party will take place on Thursday, 18th June from 6.30pm – 8.00pm.  Details regarding this event have already been posted on our Instagram.

summer service

We would warmly like to invite all our parents/carers and other family members to join us at our Summer Service.  This will take place in Livingstone Memorial Church at 9.30am on Tuesday, 23rd June.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Pupil Sickness

Please remember that if your child has suffered from sickness or diarrhoea, he/she should stay at home for at least 48 hours (2 days) after their symptoms stop to prevent the infection being passed on to anyone else.  We have a number of children and staff who are medically vulnerable, so your support with this is greatly appreciated.

Administering Medicine

South Lanarkshire Council has guidelines on the administration of medication.  Should your child require to take prescribed medication in school, it is essential that you complete an ‘Administration of Medicine’ form.  A copy of this form is available on request from the school office.  Pupils may carry inhalers with them however an ‘Administration of Medicine’ form must still be completed.   Only medication prescribed by a doctor and with written parental/carer consent will be able to be administered. It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that medication is within its ‘use by’ date. Please also remember to keep us up-to-date regarding any health-related issues for your child as we are aware that these can change at any time.

Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast Club continues to run every morning.  There is no charge for this and children will be offered the choice of Weetabix/toast/fresh fruit and a cup of water/milk.  Children coming to Breakfast Club should enter the school via the main door between 8.15am and 8.35am.  Unfortunately, we will be unable to accept any children outwith these times.    Children will be supervised by 2 support assistants and they are expected to show responsible and safe behaviour at all times, following the same rules that apply in our dining hall at lunchtime.

Parent Council Meeting

Our Parent Council meetings have now finished for this session, with the next meeting taking place on Thursday, 10th September.  This meeting shall also consist of the AGM when new office bearers will be appointed.  Details on how you can join this meeting will be sent home at the start of the new school year.    For some parents/carers, this session marks their last year as part of the Parent Council since their child will be moving on to S1 in August.  On behalf of everyone associated with the school, I would like to thank those concerned for their undivided support over the years.   Thank you, too, to the Parent Council for thier generous donation to support the P7 Leavers’ Party.  As a special treat, they have also arranged for an ice cream van to come to the school on the last day of term so every child will be given a cone or a slush free of charge.  If you do not wish your child to participate in this, please contact the school office to let us know.

School Closures

The school will then close on Thursday, 25th June at 1.00pm for the Summer holidays.  Pupils will return to school on Thursday, 13th August following 2 in-service days for staff.  Please keep checking our school website
