WHY EYE DONATION IS SO IMPORTANT ?

There are 25 lakhs corneal blind in our country who can regain vision through cornea grafting surgery – which could be made possible only by increasing the number of people coming forward to donate eyes of their departed kith and kin.

Eye donation is a glorious triumph over physical death as the departed donor’s precious cornea continues to live and serve.

WHAT IS EYE DONATION?

Eye donation refers to the process of pledging to donate one’s eyes after death. Donated eyes are used for corneal blind patients to restore their vision.

It is a voluntary act which causes no harm to the sentiments and religious faiths of the deceased’s family.

HOW CAN YOU PLEDGE TO DONATE THE EYES?

The process requires you to fill a form, available in our eye bank. The form is also available online to fill (see below).

It is also important to inform your family member or friends about the decision. Eyes can be donated only with the consent of the family members if the eye bank is informed at the time of death.

FACTS ON EYE DONATION:
  • Sex, Age, religion,wearing spectacles, diabetes or any other bodily illness are absolutely no bar for eye donation. Even blind person can donate the eyes as long as the corneas are healthy.
  • Motivate kith and kin to donate the eyes of their departed and with their consent contact the nearest eye bank immediately.
  • After the death close the eyelids, keep ice packs on closed eyes,raise the head with a pillow and put off the fan.
  • Eyes have to be collected within six hours of death .
  • Removal of eyes will not disfigure the face of the departed as eyelids are closed skillfully by the eye surgeon.
  • Removal of eyes will take only about 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Our enucleation team will rush to the to the place of death whether it be house or hospital and collect eyes at any time day or night.
  • The procedure of eye donation is free of cost.All expenses for enucleation, collection, transportation, evaluation and storage are borne by the eye bank
What happens to the donated eyes?

After removal the donor eye is brought to the hospital, the eyes are analyzed, processed at the eye bank and then cornea is transplanted within 96 hours. Patients who are registered are called on priority.
