On Tuesday, Sept. 30, MECHA brought a new student event, Loteria Lunch, to PRHS at the Bearcat Hall. The MECHA club came together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with games, music, and candy. Despite having their annual baile canceled last school year, the MECHA club is back and eager to make new cultural events for students to participate in. Co-Presidents, Maricarmen Anducho (12) and Jessica Lopez (12), and club advisor Jasmin McEntire, have been hard at work planning Loteria Lunch. Each Tuesday, the MECHA club has their club meetings in which members come up with ideas and add it onto their agenda.
“The process was not too difficult especially since admin has been super helpful and they will even be providing some supplies,” Lopez said.
Loteria Lunch brought over 53 of students to Bearcat hall. Students were greeted with cards and smiles from the MECHA club members. According to La Casa Hogar, Loteria is a game similar to bingo, however instead of numbers on boards, the players have images and are required to yell “Loteria!” when they make four in a row.
Jasmin McEntire and Constantino Delgado, both MECHA advisors, attended and played along with the students. While the co-presidents, Anducho and Lopez, served as announcers; they were in charge of yelling the names of the cards for the attendees to hear. When the entire Loteria card was full of beans, the player had to yell out "Loteria" and one of the MECHA presidents would check and give them a prize, a Mexican candy of their choosing.
