Johnston Community Primary School Friday 23th February 2024

Dear parents/guardians,

We have a another very short term ahead of us and I thought that it might be useful for me to outline a few dates to provide you with as much notice as possible.

  2. Monday 26th February. All Eisteddfod entries must be brought to school.
  3. Friday 1st March. St. Davids Day and School Eisteddfod. Pupils are welcome to wear Welsh Dress/ Red or Green.
  4. Thursday 7th March - World Book Day! Pupils are welcome to either dress up as a book character or to wear their pyjamas to school. During the afternoon we have activities planned with year six pupils leading sessions in reading.

Summer Holiday Provision - Have your say...

For the first time last summer, we ran a provision called 'Food and Fun'. Schools who wish to take part are able to apply for separate funding which supports the initiative. Food and Fun operates Monday-Thursday, 8:00 until 13:00 each day for three weeks. There is no charge for families taking part and pupils are provided with breakfast and a hot lunch. I am currently planning provision for next summer. Food and fun provision is staffing with adults who currently work at Johnston C.P. School. I have created a short consultation for parents to complete. I would like to find out how many parents would be interested in using the provision. Please note - this is only a consultation and until I have more information I am unable to guarantee places at this point. I have to consider how many parents are interested in using the provision in different age phases as I need to plan staffing, activities and age groups.

Early Years Update

Since January 2024 we have made some slight alterations to the way that children learn in our Early Years setting. After a visit to Tavernspite School (another very high performing school locally) we took the decision to adapt our Reception and Nursery Classes to an early years setting. In the past, we have run a distinctly separate Nursery and Reception class. Whilst Miss Pearce is still responsible for the Nursery pupils and Mrs Hay is still responsible for reception class they are now working together closely to provide rich learning experiences for pupils. Across the Early Years wing we are able to provide a high adult/pupil ratio. During literacy and maths sessions this allows for fluidity of movement so pupils can be taught in groups which might be made up of some Reception and some Nursery pupils. This ensures all pupils receive the provision that need. Staff have found the new system has worked well.

Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me or speak to me at the gate in the mornings.

As ever, if there is anything that I can help with, my email address is Williamsr1688@hwbcymru.net

Kind regards,

Mr. Williams.

Parent Governor Vacancy

There is a vacancy for a parent governor on the governing body of the above school. If you have a child at the school you are eligible to apply to take up this position. The term of office of a governor is four years and, if your child leaves school during this time, you may still continue as a governor until your term of office ends.

Friday Booking Form

Please ensure that pupils are booked for Friday afternoon provision using this form. This allows me to plan staffing effectively.  I have changed the form slightly to help me analyse the data. Please complete one form per child.

Attendance Reminder

This week, our attendance has been 94.15% Well done to year six with 99% attendance. You have won a special treat!

Don't forget the really useful guidance provided by the NHS: Is my child too ill for school?

This will help you make a decision about whether to keep a child off school or send them in. Please remember that minor coughs and colds should not prevent a child from coming into school.

This time of year is really exciting and busy. If children miss school they are not only missing learning, but often will miss lots of our special events and activities, which makes them feel left out.
