Elementary Students Celebrate the 100th Day of School
On Wednesday, February 12, many elementary students participated in 100th Day of School events! Throughout the District, students counted to 100, searched for 100 items in their rooms, made artwork with 100 items and dressed up like they were 100 years old.
Pattengill students dressed like they were as old as their building, which turns 100 this year! At Angell, one kindergarten class had to find 100 erasers hidden around the room. TK and Kindergarten students at Rogers used 100 Froot Loops to make colorful (and tasty) necklaces and Burton students engaged with many 100-themed activities, including counting, graphing, and writing about what they would do with $100. Enjoy the photos below showcasing all the 100 day fun.
Rogers Student Council Hosts Occupation Day
On February 5, 2025, Rogers Elementary School participated in Occupation Day. This annual event, started by the Rogers Student Council in 2019, serves as a platform for caregivers to highlight the diverse array of career options available to students. Utilizing tri-fold posters to showcase the essence of their respective careers, adults engaged with students across various grades in a creative, science-fair-style setup. This interactive format allowed students to gain insights into numerous occupations as they rotated through different stations, including accountants, project managers, doctors, entrepreneurs, chiropractors, lawyers, journalists and more. The event showcased a plethora of professions, with each presenter sharing insights and sparking curiosity among the students.
Occupation Day aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore a variety of career options, empowering them to envision the multitude of professional possibilities awaiting them after graduation.
Board of Education Recognizes Athletes and Musicians
At the February 10th Board of Education meeting, the Board recognized students who achieved state and national recognition for the BHS eSports team, middle school musicians who received recognition from a state organization and middle school girls swimmers who qualified for the state meet.
eSports Teams
The Board recognized the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Team, including Shira Mendelson (senior, captain), Kathryn Frazier (senior), Pierce Manter (sophomore), Rocco Cusumano (senior), Legend Brooks (sophomore) and Dominic Caramagno (freshman) for finishing in the top 16 of the state.
The eSports Chess Team competed in the Eastern Time Zone of the United States Region (all or part of 22 states) and finished 2nd overall. The team consisted of Braedon Golarz (senior, captain), Luke Demerre (senior) and Sage Krysiak (sophomore).
A second chess team including Ephraim Ball (senior), Aidan Freeman (junior) and Jackson Falenski (freshman) finished in the top 16 of that same eastern time zone region as well. eSports advisor Frank Guglielmetti joined the students at the Board meeting to share the team's successes.
AMS Students Selected for Honors by Michigan State Band & Orchestra Association
Two Anderson Middle School Band students were honored at the Board meeting for being recognized by the Michigan State Band & Orchestra Association (MSBOA) for their outstanding audition for the MSBOA All-State Band. Hundreds of students from all over the state audition for a coveted spot in this ensemble, which performed at the state-wide Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids in January 2025. Hayden McClure (trumpet) earned an Honorable Mention and Bea Verriest (trombone) was selected to perform with the ensemble in January. Teacher Keri Pruse shared with the Board what the audition process was like for these musicians and that they were selected among thousands of students who auditioned.

Huntington Woods Men’s Club Invites Community to Annual Auction Benefiting Berkley Schools
A message from our community partners, The Huntington Woods Men’s Club:
The Huntington Woods Men’s Club’s 44th annual Service Auction is coming up and, this year, it is raising money to improve Burton Community Field, adjacent to Burton Elementary School.
The plan includes improving the field’s drainage and grading, removing the south baseball field, upgrading the north T-ball field and putting up new fencing. The changes would make the green space so much better for students and would drastically decrease the number of indoor-recess days because of mud and puddles!
The Berkley School District also plans to contribute to the project and will continue to manage the field, as the owner of the land. The HWMC contribution helps offset District costs allowing more projects to take place across the District through the Sinking Fund.
You can help by supporting the Huntington Woods Men’s Club Service Auction on April 26 at the Gillham Recreation Center. Tickets go on sale March 1, and there will be online bidding for those who can’t make it to the event.
Find more information on the Huntington Woods Men’s Club website.

Flowers will be available for pick up on Thursday, May 22 from 1:30-5:30 pm in the BHS athletic parking lot.

Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. Read more on the origins of Black History Month on the History Channel website.

Groundhog Day - February 2
Groundhog Day is a tradition observed in the United States and Canada on February 2 of every year. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early.
Since 1887 a groundhog in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, has been the center of a staged appearance each February 2. In what has become a media event, the groundhog “Punxsutawney Phil” is the center of attention of television weathermen and newspaper photographers.

Ramadan - Begins February 28
Ramadan, in Islam, is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the holy month of fasting. It begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon. Because the Muslim calendar year is shorter than the Gregorian calendar year, Ramadan begins 10–12 days earlier each year, allowing it to fall in every season throughout a 33-year cycle.
Islamic tradition states that it was during Ramadan, on the “Night of Power” (Laylat al-Qadr)—commemorated on one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan, usually the 27th night—that God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad the Qurʾān, Islam’s holy book, “as a guidance for the people.” For Muslims, Ramadan is a period of introspection, communal prayer (ṣalāt) in the mosque, and reading of the Qurʾān.
