q&a with Raquel Ortiz, class of 2025

Raquel graduated from the Mount in May 2025 with her degree in Psychology. She now works as an ABA Therapist and is pursuing her Masters for BCBA.
Being on the swim team impacted my college career immensely, it gave me some of my closest friends.

Q: What events did you primarily swim during your time at MSMC?

50 free, 100 free, backstroke.

Q: What made you decide to join the team?

I decided to join the swim team because from a young age I always loved being in the water.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories from being part of the MSMC swim team?

My favorite memories of being on the team are definitely morning practices, getting up before the sun definitely sucked a little bit but getting to see all of my friends and getting to joke around and endure those cold early practices with them made it worth it.

Q: What was your proudest accomplishment as a swimmer at MSMC?

My proudest accomplishment has to be during Metro Championships when I brought all my times down after working hard through a shoulder injury. That same weekend I had the flu and was able to swim through it and do a 200 in the women’s relay, getting high fives from Coach Chris, Coach Gurk, and all my teammates after that was so rewarding.

Q: How did being on the swim team impact your college experience?

Being on the swim team impacted my college career immensely, it gave me some of my closest friends and taught me better time management.

Q: What have you been doing since graduating?

Since graduating I’ve been working as an ABA Therapist and pursuing higher education in getting my Masters Degree for BCBA.

Q: Do you stay in touch with any former teammates or coaches?

I regularly keep in touch with all my teammates, they're family at this point. You spend enough time with them during the season and around campus that once you leave The Mount it’s a little hard getting used to the idea that I don’t get to see them as often as before.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share about your time at MSMC?

Freshmen: Entering college is a learning curve. You’ll land on your feet eventually and that class you got a C in will be a thing of the past once you realize that there are so many people on campus who are willing to help. Lean on your professors, friends, coaches, and advisors. The Mount will not let you go at it alone.

Seniors: Senioritis is real. And while you’re finishing your undergrad career, you’ll hear of all these amazing things other people are doing and you’ll feel behind… but you’re not. You are right where you need to be. College is going to end and life is going to come at you at full speed so it’s okay to feel a little stuck. You’re not behind, you’re lying in wait - for all the great things to come.
